    Get PDF
This reference text covers the latest developments in biochar materials research, a field which is becoming increasingly popular due to the potential of biochar to replace carbon materials derived from non-renewable sources. Emerging and innovative applications of biochar materials are discussed, and all aspects of the field are covered, from production to applications, including details on the techniques used. There is a particular focus on biochar as a material for composites and sensors. This is the first book to cover emerging applications of biochar as an innovative, versatile, carbon-based renewable material, beyond its traditional uses in agriculture. It is a valuable reference for all researchers in the fields of biochar and carbon materials, including industry practitioners

When breeding temperate forage species is investigated, some attributes such as herbage accumulation and seasonal growth patterns have to be considered. To modify some of these traits, knowledge of the detailed process might be useful. In order to evaluate seasonal growth of contrasting white clover populations an experiment was carried out. Treatments were five cultivars and three local populations collected in Argentina. Weekly measures were taken during each season to calculate leaf appearance and flower appearance rates, stolon growing rate and dry matter (DM) net accumulation. Different germplasm of this species have different mechanisms for DM accumulation. Leaf size, more than leaf appearance rate, was the variable with most differences among germplasm and mostly related to dry matter accumulation. During spring and summer, inflorescences production had important effects on growing stolon rate, and differences among germplasm were evident. Some local populations showed favourable attributes that could be useful for breeding

Bio char as cheap and environmental friendly filler able to improve polymer mechanical properties

    Get PDF
Composites and in particular polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have a growing interest in all the applications where both lightweight and mechanical properties are requested. At the same time, environmental problems force to study the low impact materials and, in particular, recycling materials are an added value. To meet both, the ever increasing demands of the PMCs market and develop environmental compatibility, bio based fillers from natural sources have gained substantial interest to reinforce polymer matrices. In this work we study biochar derived by maple based biochar (BC) and same BC heat treated (BCHT) used as carbon filler in epoxy resin (E0). Nowadays, the development of innovative sensors represents a field of great interest in the scientific community because of their ever increasing application in everyday life. Piezoresistive transducers are among the most interesting not only as sensors but also as actuators. They are of interest for a number of applicative fields ranging from pressure sensors to applications in nanomanipulation. Please click Additional Files below to see the full abstract

Characterization of Visuomotor/Imaginary Movements in EEG: An Information Theory and Complex Network Approach

Imagined activities could actually be a cognitive basis for creative thinking. However, it is still unknown how they might be related with the architecture of the brain. A recent study has proved the relevance of the imagined activity when investigating neuronal diseases by comparing variations in the neuronal activity of patients with brain diseases and healthy subjects. One important aspect of the scientific methodologies focused on neuronal diseases is therefore to provide a trustable methodology that could allow us to distinguish between realized and imagined activities in the brain. The electroencephalogram is the result of synchronized action of the cerebrum, and our end is portraying the network dynamics through the neuronal responses when the subjects perform visuomotor and specific imaginary assignments. We use a subtle information theoretical approach accounting for the time causality of the signal and the closeness centrality of the different nodes. More specifically we perform estimations of the probability distribution of the data associated to each node using the Bandt and Pompe approach to account for the causality of the electroencephalographic signals. We calculate the Jensen-Shannon distance across different nodes, and then we quantify how fast the information flow would be through a given node to other nodes computing the closeness centrality. We perform a statistical analysis to compare the closeness centrality considering the different rhythmic oscillation bands for each node taking into account imagined and visuomotor tasks. Our discoveries stress the pertinence of the alpha band while performing and distinguishing the specific imaginary or visuomotor assignments.Fil: Baravalle, RomĂĄn. Influence of Commercial Biochar Fillers on Brittleness/Ductility of Epoxy Resin Composites

    Get PDF
Production of versatile composites is a very attractive field. Carbon containing epoxy resins are one of the most relevant reinforced plastics used for a wide number of applications. In this research, we studied the influence of five different commercial biochar samples for the selective enhancement of brittleness and ductility of an epoxy based composite. We proved the relationship between biochar morphology and composites mechanical properties with the aid of FT-IR and FE-SEM analysis. We were able to improve the neat resin mechanical properties by doubling its Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength using a wheat straw derived material, and to increase its elongation by 40%, we used a Miscanthus derived biochar
