    Restoring the restoration: The Palaestra of the West Gymnasium of Kos

    The contribution derives from a recent investigation held at the DICAR Department of the Polytechnic of Bari, under the scientific supervision of professor Giorgio Rocco, regarding the Palaestra and the Western Gymnasium of Kos. According to the research, the above mentioned Palaestra, one of the largest in the ancient world, is to be dated to the II century B.C. It was partially dug out in 1936 by L. Morricone during the Italian dominance over the Southern Sporades (1912-1948). At that time many restoration works were undertaken in the Italian Dodecanese and also the Palaestra was subjected to an anastylosis which had partially rised its oriental porch. The new search relies on new detailed drawings, complemented with a catalogue of architectural fragments and the analysis of the structures finalized to the reconstructive study. Afterwards the analysis has focused on the critical status of the same Italian restoration, carried on with integration of concrete cement, elaborating a derestoration project and a proposal for an anastylosis of a further section of the porch with the aim to enhancing the archaeological area. Starting from the results of this research, the purpose of our paper is to provide for a contribution to the controversial and highly-discussed topic of the architectural restoration in archaeological sites with a specific focus on the following points of interest: • The Italian restoration in Dodecanese: a synthesis (Antonello Fino); • The Italian restoration of the Palaestra of the West Gymnasium of Kos: an unfinished yard? (Rossella Martino); • Restoring the restoration. A new project for de-restoration and preservation (Daniele Mallardi); • A proposal for the accomplishment of the anastylosis and guide lines for the enhancement of the archaeological site (Claudia Lamanna)

    Comparison of magnetic resonance spectroscopy, proton density fat fraction and histological analysis in the quantification of liver steatosis in children and adolescents

    AIM: To establish a threshold value for liver fat content between healthy children and those with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with liver biopsy serving as a reference standard. METHODS: The study was approved by the local ethics committee, and written informed consent was obtained from all participants and their legal guardians before the study began. Twenty-seven children with NAFLD underwent liver biopsy to assess the presence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. The assessment of liver fat fraction was performed using MRI, with a high field magnet and 2D gradient-echo and multiple-echo T1-weighted sequence with low flip angle and single-voxel point-resolved ¹H MR-Spectroscopy (¹H-MRS), corrected for T1 and T2* decays. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the best cut-off value. Lin coefficient test was used to evaluate the correlation between histology, MRS and MRI-PDFF. A Mann-Whitney U-test and multivariate analysis were performed to analyze the continuous variables. RESULTS: According to MRS, the threshold value between healthy children and those with NAFLD is 6%; using MRI-PDFF, a cut-off value of 3.5% is suggested. The Lin analysis revealed a good fit between the histology and MRS as well as MRI-PDFF. CONCLUSION: MRS is an accurate and precise method for detecting NAFLD in children

    LoCuSS: Hydrostatic Mass Measurements of the High-LXL_X Cluster Sample -- Cross-calibration of Chandra and XMM-Newton

    We present a consistent analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of an approximately mass-selected sample of 50 galaxy clusters at 0.15<z<0.30.15<z<0.3 -- the "LoCuSS High-LXL_X Sample". We apply the same analysis methods to data from both satellites, including newly developed analytic background models that predict the spatial variation of the Chandra and XMM-Newton backgrounds to <2%<2\% and <5%<5\% precision respectively. To verify the cross-calibration of Chandra and XMM-Newton-based cluster mass measurements, we derive the mass profiles of the 21 clusters that have been observed with both satellites, extracting surface brightness and temperature profiles from identical regions of the respective datasets. We obtain consistent results for the gas and total hydrostatic cluster masses: the average ratio of Chandra- to XMM-Newton-based measurements of MgasM_{\rm gas} and MXM_X at r500r_{500} are 0.99±0.020.99\pm0.02 and 1.02±0.051.02\pm0.05, respectively with an intrinsic scatter of 3%\sim3\% for gas masses and 8%\sim8\% for hydrostatic masses. Comparison of our hydrostatic mass measurements at r500r_{500} with the latest LoCuSS weak-lensing results indicate that the data are consistent with non-thermal pressure support at this radius of 7%\sim7\%. We also investigate the scaling relation between our hydrostatic cluster masses and published integrated Compton parameter YsphY_{sph} measurements from the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Array. We measure a scatter in mass at fixed YsphY_{sph} of 16%\sim16\% at Δ=500\Delta=500, which is consistent with theoretical predictions of 1015%\sim10-15\% scatter.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figure

    Abstract The paper aims at illustrating the hypothesis that the Solidatiry Purchasing Groups beyond providing food organize the co-production of specific common goods: health and environment protection. The hypothesis is based on the idea that the system of practices carried put by the groups members is directed to the provision of such goods to the participants. The study concentrates on the organization of the decision-making process as the co-production of common goods require a polycentric decision-making process. The study proposes an empirical analysis which concerns with the organization of the decision-making processes in Solidarity Purchasing Groups (GPOs). Three typical case studies (Seawright, Gerring, 2008) (van Duren et al., 2003). Case studies are carried out by interviews and document analysis. The relationship between case studies and the theoretical hypothesis proposed is identified within the framework provided by Yin (1994). The analytical generalization method was applied, in which a previously developed theory is used as a template for comparing the empirical evidence from case studies (Yin, 1994, p.31) and in which results are generalized into theory

    LoCuSS: The Near-Infrared Luminosity and Weak-Lensing Mass Scaling Relation of Galaxy Clusters

    We present the first scaling relation between weak-lensing galaxy cluster mass, MWLM_{WL}, and near-infrared luminosity, LKL_K. Our results are based on 17 clusters observed with wide-field instruments on Subaru, the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, the Mayall Telescope, and the MMT. We concentrate on the relation between projected 2D weak-lensing mass and spectroscopically confirmed luminosity within 1Mpc, modelled as MWLLKbM_{WL} \propto L_{K}^b, obtaining a power law slope of b=0.830.24+0.27b=0.83^{+0.27}_{-0.24} and an intrinsic scatter of σlnMWLLK=105+8%\sigma_{lnM_{WL}|L_{K}}=10^{+8}_{-5}\%. Intrinsic scatter of ~10% is a consistent feature of our results regardless of how we modify our approach to measuring the relationship between mass and light. For example, deprojecting the mass and measuring both quantities within r500r_{500}, that is itself obtained from the lensing analysis, yields σlnMWLLK=105+7%\sigma_{lnM_{WL}|L_{K}}=10^{+7}_{-5}\% and b=0.970.17+0.17b=0.97^{+0.17}_{-0.17}. We also find that selecting members based on their (J-K) colours instead of spectroscopic redshifts neither increases the scatter nor modifies the slope. Overall our results indicate that near-infrared luminosity measured on scales comparable with r500r_{500} (typically 1Mpc for our sample) is a low scatter and relatively inexpensive proxy for weak-lensing mass. Near-infrared luminosity may therefore be a useful mass proxy for cluster cosmology experiments.Comment: 9 Pages, 5 Figures, 3 Tables. Submitted to MNRA

    Gastric transposition as a valid surgical option for esophageal replacement in pediatric patients: experience from three Italian medical centers

    BACKGROUND: Esophageal replacement in children is an option that is confined to very few situations including long-gap esophageal atresia and esophageal strictures unresponsive to other therapies (peptic or caustic ingestion). The purpose of our work was to describe the experience of gastric transposition in three Italian centers. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. The data were extrapolated from a prospective database. We included all patients who had undergone gastric transposition in the last 15 years. RESULTS: In the 15-year period, eight infants and children (3 males and 5 females) underwent gastric transposition for esophageal replacement. Six patients had long-gap esophageal atresia, and two had caustic esophageal stenosis. There were no deaths in the series. Three patients had an early postoperative complication: two had a self-limited salivary fistula at three weeks, and one (a patient with jejunostomy) had a jejunal perforation treated surgically. One late complication, anastomotic stricture, was recorded that required two endoscopic dilatations. The median follow-up was 60 months (range: 18-144 months). At final clinical follow-up, six patients had no eating problems, and two patients had some difficulties with eating (jejunostomy in situ), but they underwent logopedic therapy with improved outcomes. All patients had an increase in body weight and height postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Our small study reports the clinical experience of three Italian centers in which gastric transposition was performed with excellent results, both in terms of surgical technique (simplicity, reproducibility, complication rate) and clinical follow-up (good oral feeding of young patients, normal social life and regular growth curves)

    Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of Vascular Changes in Diabetic Macular Edema after Dexamethasone Implant Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography

    The aim of this study was to investigate retinal and choriocapillaris vessel changes in diabetic macular edema (DME) after the intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IDI) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Moreover, a comparison between morphological and functional parameters of DME and healthy patients was performed. Twenty-five eyes of 25 type 2 diabetic retinopathy patients complicated by macular edema (DME group) and 25 healthy subjects (control group) were enrolled. Superficial capillary plexus density (SCPD) and deep capillary plexus density (DCPD) in the foveal and parafoveal areas, choricapillary density (CCD) and optic disc vessel density (ODVD) were detected using OCTA at baseline and after 7, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days post injection. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), retinal sensitivity, and central retinal thickness (CMT) were also evaluated in both groups of patients. A statistically significant difference between the two groups (DME and controls) was found in terms of functional (MP, p < 0.001 and BCVA, p < 0.001) and morphological (CMT, p < 0.001; SCPD in the parafoveal area, p < 0.001; DCPD in the foveal area, p < 0.05 and parafoveal area, p < 0.001; CCD, p < 0.001) parameters. After the treatment, SCPD and DCPD in the foveal and parafoveal areas did not modify significantly during the follow up

    Retroperitoneoscopic Varicocelectomy in Adolescents: Long-term Follow-up in Two Italian Centres

    Background: The varicocele is the most commonly diagnosed pre-pubertal andrological condition with an incidence of 10%-15% between adolescents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of retroperitoneoscopic varicocelectomy (RV) in two Italian centres with particular attention to post-operative testicular volume and semen analysis after 18 years of life. Materials and Methods: From 1999 to 2010, 286 adolescents underwent retroperitoneoscopic left varicocelectomy. Of these patients, 67 were evaluated by clinical examination, ultrasound and semen analysis, allowing an adequate long-term follow-up. Results: Surgery was performed at a mean age of 13 years (range 10-17) without intraoperative complications. There were two recurrences (3%), two left testis hypotrophy (3%) and four hydroceles (6%), not yet undergone surgery because asymptomatic or without tension. Currently, 44 patients accepted to perform semen analysis which showed a reduction in sperm motility in 12 cases, with associated morphological alterations in 3 and reducing number of spermatozoa in one case. Conclusions: In consideration of morphological and biomolecular spermatic alterations reported in adolescent varicocele that could interfere with cellular migration, differentiation and nutrition, it is fundamental to consider the correction of varicocele, not only for the classical indications, but also as a choice for arresting the progressive damage that inevitably acts for several years on the adolescent testis. The RV in adolescents is a safe and feasible procedure for experienced paediatric laparoscopic surgeons with early good clinical outcomes, but more studies occur to understand the real impact of adolescent varicocelectomy on testicular function
