Design of the Front End Electronics for the Infrared Camera of JEM-EUSO, and manufacturing and verification of the prototype model
The Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Extreme Universe Space Observatory
(EUSO) will be launched and attached to the Japanese module of the
International Space Station (ISS). Its aim is to observe UV photon tracks
produced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays developing in the atmosphere and
producing extensive air showers.
The key element of the instrument is a very wide-field, very fast,
large-lense telescope that can detect extreme energy particles with energy
above eV. The Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS), comprising, among
others, the Infrared Camera (IRCAM), which is the Spanish contribution, plays a
fundamental role in the understanding of the atmospheric conditions in the
Field of View (FoV) of the telescope. It is used to detect the temperature of
clouds and to obtain the cloud coverage and cloud top altitude during the
observation period of the JEM-EUSO main instrument. SENER is responsible for
the preliminary design of the Front End Electronics (FEE) of the Infrared
Camera, based on an uncooled microbolometer, and the manufacturing and
verification of the prototype model. This paper describes the flight design
drivers and key factors to achieve the target features, namely, detector
biasing with electrical noise better than V from Hz to MHz,
temperature control of the microbolometer, from C to C
with stability better than mK over hours, low noise high bandwidth
amplifier adaptation of the microbolometer output to differential input before
analog to digital conversion, housekeeping generation, microbolometer control,
and image accumulation for noise reduction
P28 85. Análisis de la supervivencia a corto y medio plazo de la cirugía de aorta ascendente
ObjetivosEvaluar la mortalidad hospitalaria y la supervivencia a medio plazo de los pacientes sometidos a una cirugía de aorta ascendente y determinar cuáles son sus factores de riesgo.Material y métodosSe analizó de forma retrospectiva toda la población de pacientes sometidos a un procedimiento quirúrgico de aorta ascendente (sustitución con o sin cirugía valvular o de raíz asociada) entre enero de 2003 y diciembre de 2008. Se evaluó la mortalidad hospitalaria y la supervivencia absoluta en el seguimiento, y mediante análisis uni y multivariante se determinaron las correspondientes variables predictoras.ResultadosTrescientos sesenta y cinco pacientes fueron sometidos de forma consecutiva a algún procedimiento quirúrgico de la aorta ascendente. Edad media: 63,1 años (desviación estándar [DE] 13); n = 99 (27,1%) fueron mujeres; n = 58 (15,9%) habían sido sometidos a una cirugía previa. En 32 pacientes se sustituyó total o parcialmente el arco aórtico. EuroSCORE mediano de 11,72% (interquartile range [IQR]: 6,78-20,43). La mortalidad hospitalaria fue 7,7% (n = 28). Los predictores de mortalidad en análisis multivariante fueron: cirugía cardíaca previa (odds ratio [OR]: 3,18; p = 0,045), tabaquismo activo (OR: 5,7; p = 0,021), insuficiencia renal (OR: 3,03; p = 0,043), estado crítico preoperatorio (OR: 5,63; p = 0,005), edad (OR: 1,06; p = 0,018) y cirugía coronaria asociada (OR: 3,17; p = 0,35). La supervivencia a 1, 3 y 5 años fue 96, 94 y 92%. Sólo edad (hazard ratio [HR]: 1,08; p = 0,022) e hipertensión pulmonar grave (HR: 3,5; p = 0,026) fueron predictores independientes de mortalidad en el seguimiento.ConclusionesEn nuestra experiencia, la sustitución de la aorta ascendente demuestra una baja mortalidad hospitalaria y una adecuada supervivencia a medio plazo
Analyzing the Role of Fe0 and Fe3+ in the Formation of Expanded Clay Aggregates
The effect of the addition of Fe0 and Fe3+ on the formation of expanded clay aggregates was studied using iron-free kaolin as an aluminosilicates source. Likewise, the incorporation of cork powder as a source of organic carbon and Na2CO3 as a flux in the mixtures was investigated in order to assess its effect in combination with the iron phases. An experimental protocol, statistically supported by a mixture experiments/design of experiments approach, was applied to model and optimize the bloating index, density, absorption capacity, and mechanical strength. The process of expansion and pore generation and the associated decrease in density required the addition of iron, such that the optimum mixtures of these properties presented between 25 and 40 wt.% of Fe0 or Fe3+, as well as the incorporation of 3.5–5 wt.% of organic carbon. The addition of Fe3+ produced a greater volumetric expansion (max. 53%) than Fe0 (max. 8%), suggesting that the formation of the FeO leading to this phenomenon would require reducing and oxidizing conditions in the former and the latter, respectively. The experimental and model-estimated results are in good agreement, especially in the aggregates containing Fe0. Study of the synergistic impact of Fe3O4, Na2CO3 and organic C on kaolin-based lightweight aggregates by a DOE (Mixture Experiments) approach
The compositional synergies involved in the thermal formation of lightweight aggregates (LWAs) have been investigated through four pure phases: non-expansive kaolin (K); cork powder (C); sodium carbonate (N) and magnetite-Fe3O4 (M). Mixture Experiments has been applied for formulation, modeling and optimization. LWAs have been manufactured from 36 starting mixtures and the main technological properties have been characterized: bloating index (BI), particle density (ρrd), water absorption (WA24) and crushing strength (S). Maximum BI and WA24 together with minimum density are associated with the addition of a significant amount of iron phase in combination with small proportions of organic carbon (Optimal [BI > 60%]: 56.0% K + 40.2% M + 3.9% C + 0% N), while S increases antagonistically with expansion. Iron reduction by incomplete combustion of C appears to be critical in pore formation and concomitant bloating. N has enhanced the sphericity of the expanded specimens. Incidence, clinical characteristics and management of inflammatory bowel disease in Spain: large-scale epidemiological study
(1) Aims: To assess the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Spain, to describe the main epidemiological and clinical characteristics at diagnosis and the evolution of the disease, and to explore the use of drug treatments. (2) Methods: Prospective, population-based nationwide registry. Adult patients diagnosed with IBD—Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD unclassified (IBD-U)—during 2017 in Spain were included and were followed-up for 1 year. (3) Results: We identified 3611 incident cases of IBD diagnosed during 2017 in 108 hospitals covering over 22 million inhabitants. The overall incidence (cases/100, 000 person-years) was 16 for IBD, 7.5 for CD, 8 for UC, and 0.5 for IBD-U; 53% of patients were male and median age was 43 years (interquartile range = 31–56 years). During a median 12-month follow-up, 34% of patients were treated with systemic steroids, 25% with immunomodulators, 15% with biologics and 5.6% underwent surgery. The percentage of patients under these treatments was significantly higher in CD than UC and IBD-U. Use of systemic steroids and biologics was significantly higher in hospitals with high resources. In total, 28% of patients were hospitalized (35% CD and 22% UC patients, p < 0.01). (4) Conclusion: The incidence of IBD in Spain is rather high and similar to that reported in Northern Europe. IBD patients require substantial therapeutic resources, which are greater in CD and in hospitals with high resources, and much higher than previously reported. Muticenter spanish study for perioperative stroke risk prediction after isolated coronary artery bypass surgery: The PACK2 score
[ES] Objetivos: Desarrollar un modelo predictivo multivariante del accidente cerebrovascular (ACV) intrahospitalario tras cirugía de bypass coronario. Métodos: Veintiséis mil trescientos cuarenta y siete pacientes incluidos en el estudio procedentes de 21 bases de datos de hospitales españoles. El análisis de regresión logística fue utilizado para predecir el riesgo de ACV perioperatorio (ictus o accidente isquémico transitorio). El modelo predictivo fue desarrollado a partir de un subgrupo de datos «de prueba» y validado en otro subgrupo independiente, ambos seleccionados aleatoriamente del total de la muestra. La capacidad predictiva del modelo se relacionó con el área bajo la curva ROC (ABC). Las variables consideradas fueron: preoperatorias (edad, sexo, diabetes mellitus, hipertensión arterial, ACV previo, insuficiencia cardiaca y/o fracción de eyección del ventrículo izquierdo < 40%, prioridad de la intervención no electiva, arteriopatía extracardiaca, insuficiencia renal crónica y/o creatininemia ≥ 2 mg/dl y fibrilación auricular) e intraoperatorias (cirugía coronaria con/sin circulación extracorpórea). Resultados: Incidencia global de ACV perioperatorio 1,38%. La prioridad no electiva de la cirugía (priority; OR = 2,32), arteriopatía extracardiaca (arteriopathy; OR = 1,37), insuficiencia cardiaca (cardiac; OR = 3.64) e insuficiencia renal crónica (kidney; OR = 6,78) fueron identificados como factores de riesgo independientes de ACV perioperatorio en los modelos uni y multivariante en el subgrupo de prueba; p < 0,0001; ABC = 0,77, IC del 95%, 0,73-0,82. El modelo PACK2 de ACV perioperatorio tras cirugía de bypass coronario se estableció con 1 punto para cada ítem, excepto para la insuficiencia renal crónica que se le otorgaron 2 puntos (rango 0-5 puntos); ABC = 0,76, IC del 95%, 0,72-0,80. En pacientes con puntuación PACK2 ≥ 2 puntos, la cirugía coronaria sin circulación extracorpórea redujo la incidencia de ACV en un 2,3% cuando se comparó con el grupo con cirugía realizada con circulación extracorpórea. Conclusiones: La escala de riesgo PACK2 muestra una buena capacidad predictiva en los datos analizados y podría ser útil en la toma de decisiones y selección de pacientes de la práctica clínica.[EN] Objectives: To develop a multivariate predictive risk score of perioperative in-hospital stroke after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Methods: A total of 26,347 patients were enrolled from 21 Spanish hospital databases. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict the risk of perioperative stroke (stroke or transient ischaemic attack). The predictive scale was developed from a training set of data and validated by an independent test set, both selected randomly from the global sample. The assessment of the accuracy of prediction was related to the area under the ROC curve (AUC). The variables considered were: preoperative (age, gender, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, previous stroke, cardiac failure and/or left ventricular ejection fraction < 40%, non-elective priority of surgery, extracardiac arteriopathy, chronic kidney failure and/or serum creatinine ≥2 mg/dl, and atrial fibrillation) and intra-operative (on/off-pump). Results: The overall perioperative stroke incidence was 1.38%. Non-elective priority of surgery (priority; OR = 2.32), vascular disease (arteriopathy; OR = 1.37), heart failure (cardiac; OR = 3.64), and chronic kidney failure (kidney; OR = 6.78) were found to be independent risk factors for perioperative stroke in uni- and multivariate models in the training set of data; P < .0001; AUC = 0.77, 95% CI 0.73–0.82. The PACK2 stroke CABG score was established with 1 point for each item, except for chronic kidney failure with 2 points (range 0–5 points); AUC = 0.76, 95% CI 0.72–0.80. In patients with PACK2 score ≥2 points, off-pump reduced perioperative stoke incidence by 2.3% when compared with on-pump CABG. The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs. Two temperate Earth-mass planet candidates around Teegarden’s Star
Context.Teegarden’s Star is the brightest and one of the nearest ultra-cool dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. For its late spectral type (M7.0 V),the star shows relatively little activity and is a prime target for near-infrared radial velocity surveys such as CARMENES.Aims.As part of the CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs, we obtained more than 200 radial-velocity measurements of Teegarden’sStar and analysed them for planetary signals.Methods.We find periodic variability in the radial velocities of Teegarden’s Star. We also studied photometric measurements to rule out stellarbrightness variations mimicking planetary signals.Results.We find evidence for two planet candidates, each with 1.1M⊕minimum mass, orbiting at periods of 4.91 and 11.4 d, respectively. Noevidence for planetary transits could be found in archival and follow-up photometry. Small photometric variability is suggestive of slow rotationand old age.Conclusions.The two planets are among the lowest-mass planets discovered so far, and they are the first Earth-mass planets around an ultra-cooldwarf for which the masses have been determined using radial velocities.We thank the referee Rodrigo Díaz for a careful review andhelpful comments. The Spanish Infrared Camera onboard the EUSO-BALLOON (CNES) flight on August 24, 2014
The EUSO-Balloon (CNES) campaign was held during Summer 2014 with a launch on August
24. In the gondola, next to the Photo Detector Module (PDM), a completely isolated Infrared
camera was allocated. Also, a helicopter which shooted flashers flew below the balloon. We have
retrieved the Cloud Top Height (CTH) with the IR camera, and also the optical depth of the nonclear atmosphere have been inferred with two approaches: The first one is with the comparison of the brightness temperature of the cloud and the real temperature obtained after the pertinent
corrections. The second one is by measuring the detected signal from the helicopter flashers by the IR Camera, considering the energy of the flashers and the location of the helicopter
