Studies were conducted from January to October 2005 to determine the effect of root-cutting length on adventitious shoot yield and the management practices necessary to produce nurseryquality primocane-fruiting blackberry plants. The first portion of the study measured the average number of shoots produced from 7.6 cm- and 15.2 cm-long root cuttings of APF-44 blackberry—a primocane-fruiting genotype from the University of Arkansas breeding program. Cuttings were forced in a shallow bin containing a soilless potting medium. The average number of shoots per root cutting from 7.6 cm- and 15.2 cm- long root cuttings averaged 1.6 and 2.7 shoots per root cutting, respectively. Rooting percentage for collected shoots was nearly 100% regardless of root-cutting length source. A qualitative comparison of shoots from the two roots lengths was similar. The latter part of the study included various treatments on the rooted shoots that might affect the productivity and quality of the final product intended for nursery sales in early fall. With the aim of producing a flowering/fruiting shrub by late September, three treatments were applied: pot dimension, fertilizer rate, and shoot tipping. Fertilizer rate had the greatest impact of all treatments with the higher rate producing larger and more attractive plants. Above-normal summer/fall temperatures may explain lack of fruiting on APF-44 blackberries, but the dimension and size of some plants provided a portion of the intended aesthetic

Psychological type profile of Roman Catholic priests : an empirical enquiry in the United States

    Get PDF
This study explores the psychological type profile of Roman Catholic priests serving in the United States, drawing on data provided by 55 priests who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales. The data demonstrated clear preferences for introversion (67 %), sensing (64 %), and judging (91 %), and for a balance between thinking (49 %) and feeling (51 %). A very high proportion of priests reported preferences for ISTJ (27 %), compared with 16 % of men in the U.S. population. Implications of these findings are discussed for ministry in the Roman Catholic Church

Air vehicle diagnostic system rotor head load and global fault evaluation as installed on the SH-60F helicopter

    Get PDF
This study covers SH-60F rotor head load estimation, track and balance fault detection, and degraded component diagnostics of the Air Vehicle Diagnostic SystemAdvanced Technology Demonstration. The purpose of this study was to acquire load data from selected,SH-60F main rotor components; provide proof of concept for the use of neural networks in load estimation; acquire SH-60F main rotor track and balance and vibration data in nominal (no known defect) condition and with intentionally induced known out of track and balance conditions in the main rotor; and acquire SH-60F main rotor track and balance and vibration data in nominal condition and with degraded rotor head components at varying flight conditions. The method of data collection was a survey recorder which houses a memory unit, a neural network and the maneuver recognition algorithms. The memory unit was used to record the load estimation, maneuver recognition algorithms, track and balance, and main rotor degraded component detection system results. Data signals are received directly from the aircraft 1553 databus, existing aircraft systems, and special sensors designed for each task. Strain gauges placed at four different rotor head locations to provide truth data for comparison with the neural network data. The instrumentation monitors 37 parameters for three testing phases totaling over 50 flight hours. Results indicate that the neural network estimation are within 10 percent of the actual strain gauge loads and that the main rotor track and balance capability of the system was able to quickly and accurately track the rotor system and lower vibrations to acceptable levels. The main rotor head fault detection data provided further support for the use of neural networks in vibration analysis

Sensitivity and resolution in 19F and 15N solid-state NMR: applications to pharmaceutical systems

    Get PDF
This thesis describes a study into the improvement of solid-state NMR methods for the detection and characterisation of pharmaceutical compound. Chapter 1 reviews the literature that are relevant to the techniques discussed within this thesis Chapter 2 outlines the key experimental techniques employed within this work. Chapter 3 investigates the usefulness of indirect detection as a method to detect and possibly quantify the ratio of 15N present for multiple 15N containing systems. The work highlights how for CP performed at fast MAS, there is a much greater sensitivity to the RF inhomogeneity of the probe, and how this be reduced by using ramped CP. The results showed that for routine detection of 15N it is advised to detect via routine CP, due to the more complex setup of indirect detection. Chapter 4 discusses the potential of combining REDOR data and that of powder X-ray diffraction as a method to improve the efficiency of structural determination of powders. The investigation was performed on two pseudo-polymorphs with the aim of measuring differences in the 13C-19F couplings. The aim was that many ‘loose constraints’ could be used to improve efficiency when working with natural abundance 13C. Chapter 5 for 19F, a large number of model compounds were selected to reflect the broad range of possible fluorine environments, ranging from per-fluorinated systems where the line-width is dominated by homonuclear coupling to systems dilute in 19F when the total line-width is found to be determined by the hetero-nuclear decoupling as well as in-homogenous contribution. Combining the data from the model compounds it has led to a better understanding the factors that determine 19F resolution. As such a suitable work scheme in order to achieve the best resolution for 19F containing compounds is presented. Chapter 6 investigates the combination of NMR and calculated data in order to assign chemical shifts to specific crystal sites1. The results show that by combining ab initio calculations with 2D NMR data confident assignment of peaks is possible. (1) Robbins, A. J.; Ng, W. T. K.; Jochym, D.; Keal, T. W.; Clark, S. This thesis takes a survey of key accounting issues and concepts addressed in financial accounting reporting. Accountancy majors of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College were given an opportunity to complete their thesis before their internship during senior year by taking two classes over junior year. This thesis was constructed under the guidance of Dr. Vicki Dickinson. The thesis itself is a compilation of twelve different cases, and each case studies various areas of the accounting and business environment

Left arm of the Republic: The Department of the Pacific during the Civil War

    Get PDF
Although the Civil War was fought largely in the East it was a transcontinental war. Securing the Far West for the Union played an important, though secondary role in the northern war effort. When most of the Regular Army units were called east, holding the region and confronting the multiple threats to its security fell to the western volunteers. Through their efforts, they maintained a general stability in a vast region where both potential and actualized threats could easily have hampered Union efforts in the main theatres of war. Therefore, by quelling secessionist schemes and activities and attempting to maintain peaceful relations between the various tribes and the flood of whites that continued to flow into the region, the less than 20,000 volunteers protected the Far West from internal dangers.;Internal responsibilities were only part of the potential hazards lurking along and within the department\u27s vast territory. As had been demonstrated during the 1859 Pig War crisis, relations with the British in far western Canada could easily turn dangerous. Likewise, once the French imperial designs for Mexico were put into action, department commanders had to ensure that the United States did not become entangled in that quagmire, despite the sympathies of most Americans for the Mexican cause. Thus, despite having been ignored and misunderstood, the Department of the Pacific played an important role in the larger national scene. Had not the department carried out its responsibilities successfully, the nature of the Civil War or the development of the Far West (or both) could have gone differently. To better understand the contributions made to Union war effort, his study is an examination of the responsibilities faced by the Union\u27s most remote military command during the Civil War and how it met those responsibilities, and in turn how doing so aided the Union cause by protecting the Far West from the nation\u27s enemies

SHH, Don\u27t Speak: The Act of Overcoming Silencing and Empowering Acts of Education

    Get PDF
Silencing appears in various avenues – classroom interactions amongst the teacher and student, hospital situations, gender/sexual identities, bullying, mental health struggles, and other forms, thus relegating individuals to the margins. This paper utilizes queer theory and critical race feminism to examine how dis(abilities) are positioned in relation to normative societal structures. Through the methodological approaches of autoethnography and narrative inquiry, we examine our stories of marginalization and silencing that have occurred in various facets of our lives. For the field of education, these stories can provide a means for other educators to invoke self-reflection on classroom practice as a way of disrupting dominant discourses that foster marginalization and silencing of students

A history of the Episcopal Church in Omaha from 1856 to 1964

    Get PDF
There are three reasons for writing a history of the Episcopal Church in Omaha with an emphasis on the foundation years. This period covers the years 1856 to 1960. First, there is a desire for a complete understanding of the history of Omaha and the various institutions that helped to make the city. Second, there is a request to have a greater understanding of the development and growth of the State of Nebraska. And thirdly, there never has been a history of the activities of the Episcopal Church in Omaha
