O presente texto procura analisar a constituição da teoria da História de Marx – qualificada como “materialismo histórico” – com atenção especial para a formulação desta teoria exposta n’A Ideologia Alemã, procurando enfatizar o papel da crítica dos conceitos da Economia Política empreendida por Marx, especialmente da categoria de divisão do trabalho, para a elaboração das linhas gerais dessa teoria

Structure of feeling and autobiography in "The country and the city"

In the context of the 50th anniversary of its publication, this article examines Raymond Williams’ The country and  the city under two key aspects. On the one hand, we attempt to explain the uses and meanings of “structure of  feeling”, which organizes the book’s argument as a kind of analytical tool. On the other hand, we will discuss the frequent autobiographical passages that reinforce the reflective and  political tone of this work.Aproveitando a efeméride dos cinquenta anos da publicação de O campo e a cidade, este artigo examina o livro de Raymond Williams sob dois aspectos principais. De um lado, pretendemos elucidar os usos e significados da noção “estrutura de sentimento”, que nesse trabalho organiza toda a argumentação, como uma espécie de operador analítico; de outro, discutimos as frequentes referências autobiográficas, que reforçam seu tom reflexivo e político.  

Cultura e política em tempos de crise

Este artigo procura oferecer uma análise de alguns textos do crítico galês Raymond Williams dos anos 1960, à luz dos debates políticos que dominaram a cena da esquerda britânica da época. Com isso, pretendemos expor de que modo Williams procurou reagir a esses debates e se posicionar em meio a essas contendas, não só nos textos de intervenção mais direta e explícita como também em estudos críticos de maior fôlego. Trata-se, portanto, de ressaltar o lugar do político como elemento constitutivo de seu projeto teórico e, com isso, oferecer alguns elementos para uma compreensão um pouco mais bem acabada da trajetória de uma figura que sempre transitou entre o trabalho intelectual e a atuação política

Pierre Bourdieu and Raymond Williams: Correspondence, meeting and cross references

The short and enclosed correspondence between Raymond Williams (1921-1988) and Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) proves the existence of actual and mutual relations between the Welsh and the French authors, very worthy in order to reflect on the development of the European Sociology of culture during the second half of the twentieth century. The main purpose of this article is to recover the contacts they kept, apart from the correspondence, through crossed citations, a seminar in Paris in 1976 and a critical text by Williams in partnership with Nicholas Garnham, published in 1980, on the work of Bourdieu after the printing of La Distinction in France.A breve e concentrada correspondência entre Raymond Williams (1921-1988) e Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) comprova a existência de relações concretas, de mão dupla, entre os autores galês e francês, muito sugestivas para se pensar o desenvolvimento da sociologia da cultura europeia na segunda metade do século xx. O objetivo principal deste texto é recensear os contatos que eles mantiveram, além da correspondência, por meio de citações cruzadas, de um seminário em Paris no ano de 1976 e de um texto crítico de Williams em parceria com Nicholas Garnham, publicado em 1980, sobre a obra de Bourdieu, em seguida à publicação de A distinção na França

Label-free, atomic force microscopy-based mapping of DNA intrinsic curvature for the nanoscale comparative analysis of bent duplexes

We propose a method for the characterization of the local intrinsic curvature of adsorbed DNA molecules. It relies on a novel statistical chain descriptor, namely the ensemble averaged product of curvatures for two nanosized segments, symmetrically placed on the contour of atomic force microscopy imaged chains. We demonstrate by theoretical arguments and experimental investigation of representative samples that the fine mapping of the average product along the molecular backbone generates a characteristic pattern of variation that effectively highlights all pairs of DNA tracts with large intrinsic curvature. The centrosymmetric character of the chain descriptor enables targetting strands with unknown orientation. This overcomes a remarkable limitation of the current experimental strategies that estimate curvature maps solely from the trajectories of end-labeled molecules or palindromes. As a consequence our approach paves the way for a reliable, unbiased, label-free comparative analysis of bent duplexes, aimed to detect local conformational changes of physical or biological relevance in large sample numbers. Notably, such an assay is virtually inaccessible to the automated intrinsic curvature computation algorithms proposed so far. We foresee several challenging applications, including the validation of DNA adsorption and bending models by experiments and the discrimination of specimens for genetic screening purposes

Critique and modernity in Raymond Williams

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo examinar a obra do crítico Raymond Williams a partir do ponto de vista da crítica da modernidade levada a cabo pelo autor em um período específico de sua trajetória: entre Cultura e sociedade (1958) e O campo e a cidade (1973). Para tanto, parte-se da reconstrução da forma assumida por essa crítica nos esquemas interpretativos daquelas que foram as duas grandes influências formativas do pensamento de Williams, e que figuraram como as duas grandes correntes teóricas no cenário intelectual inglês do século XX: a crítica literária e o marxismo. Pretende-se oferecer, com isso, uma leitura alternativa da obra do autor, repensando o peso de cada um de seus principais textos, as linhas de continuidade e as rupturas atravessando-a e, por fim, o próprio sentido do desenvolvimento teórico percorrido por Williams no período considerado, notadamente, destacando-se o impacto que o marxismo exerceu na conformação do seu projeto teórico.This dissertation aims to analyze Raymond Williams work from the point of view of the critique of modernity undertaken by him in a specific period of his trajectory: from Culture and Society (1958) to The Country and the City (1973). Therefore, we begin by reconstructing the forms assumed by this critique in the interpretative schemes of the two greatest formative influences in Williams thought, and which became the two greatest theoretical currents in the English intellectual scenario in the 20th century: literary criticism and Marxism. Hence, we plan to offer an alternative interpretation of his oeuvre, reconsidering the importance of each of his main texts, the continuities and ruptures crossing it and, finally, the sense of the theoretical development covered by Williams in the period here considered, notably, focusing the impact that Marxism produced in the shaping of his theoretical project

The long journey: Raymond Williams, politics and socialismo

Esta tese pretende oferecer uma análise da trajetória e da obra de Raymond Williams do ponto de vista de sua atuação política. Isso significa, por um lado, acompanhar a sua atividade como militante e intelectual socialista - desde o primeiro contato com a política trabalhista em sua aldeia natal, passando pelo envolvimento com o projeto da Nova Esquerda e as polêmicas em torno do estatuto teórico do marxismo inglês, até as intervenções de Williams na cena política da Grã-Bretanha dos anos 1980. Por outro lado, significa definir em que medida seus textos carregam as marcas dos debates que dominaram a cena política da esquerda inglesa da segunda metade do século XX, com destaque para as crises dos anos 1950, as idas e vindas do Partido Trabalhista nos anos 1960 e 1970 e o domínio conservador sob o governo de Margareth Thatcher nos anos 1980. Para tanto, procurou-se desenvolver uma análise que fosse capaz de articular o conteúdo das obras aos principais momentos da história política e intelectual do campo da esquerda na Grã-Bretanha. Com base nessa abordagem, verificou-se que Williams não só teve uma atuação destacada nos experimentos políticos mais importantes levados a cabo pela esquerda inglesa na segunda metade do século XX, como projetou sua teoria tendo em vista, também, os principais desafios políticos que se impunham à sua época.This thesis intends to offer an analysis of Raymond Williams\' path and work from the point of view of his political activity. This means, on one hand, to follow his practice as a militant and intellectual socialist - since the first contact with Labour politics at his home village, through the engagement with the New Left project and the disputes concerning the theoretical status of English Marxism, to Williams\' interventions on Britain\'s political scenario in the 1980s. On the other hand, it means to speciffy in which ways his texts bear the signs of the debates that prevailed on the English left\'s political scene in the second half of the 20th century, particularly the crisis of the 1950s, the comings and goings of the Labour Party in the 1960s and 1970s and the conservative dominance under the Thatcher administration in the 1980s. Therefore, our intention was to undertake an analysis that would be capable of connecting the works\' content with the main moments of the political and intellectual history of the left in Britain. Based on this approach, we can conclude that Williams not only played a key part at the most important political experiments undertaken by the English left in the second half of the 20th century but designed his theory also considering the main political challenges that impacted his time
