Experimentally exploring compressed sensing quantum tomography

In the light of the progress in quantum technologies, the task of verifying the correct functioning of processes and obtaining accurate tomographic information about quantum states becomes increasingly important. Compressed sensing, a machinery derived from the theory of signal processing, has emerged as a feasible tool to perform robust and significantly more resource-economical quantum state tomography for intermediate-sized quantum systems. In this work, we provide a comprehensive analysis of compressed sensing tomography in the regime in which tomographically complete data is available with reliable statistics from experimental observations of a multi-mode photonic architecture. Due to the fact that the data is known with high statistical significance, we are in a position to systematically explore the quality of reconstruction depending on the number of employed measurement settings, randomly selected from the complete set of data, and on different model assumptions. We present and test a complete prescription to perform efficient compressed sensing and are able to reliably use notions of model selection and cross-validation to account for experimental imperfections and finite counting statistics. Thus, we establish compressed sensing as an effective tool for quantum state tomography, specifically suited for photonic systems.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Perfluorinated Chemicals in Sediments, Lichens, and Seabirds from the Antarctic Peninsula — Environmental Assessment and Management Perspectives

Antarctica is one of the last frontiers of the planet to be investigated for the environmental transport and accumulation of persistent organic pollutants. Perfluorinated contaminants (PFCs) are a group of widely used anthropogenic substances, representing a significant risk to wildlife and humans due to their high biomagnification potential and toxicity risks, especially in food webs of the northern hemisphere and Arctic. Because the assessment of PFCs in the Antarctic continent is scarce, questions linger about the long-range transport and bioaccumulation capacity of PFCs in Antarctic food webs. To better understand the global environmental fate of PFCs, sediment, lichen (Usnea aurantiaco-atra), and seabird samples (southern giant petrel, Macronectes giganteus; gentoo penguin, Pygoscelis papua) were collected around the Antarctic Peninsula in 2009. PFC analytes were analyzed by LC/MS/MS, revealing the detection of PFHpA in seabirds’ feather and fecal samples, and PFHxS in lichens. PFBA and PFPeA were detected in 80% and 60% of the lichens, and PFTA in 60% of sediment samples. While oceanic currents and atmospheric transport of PFCs may explain the ubiquitous nature of these contaminants in the Antarctic Peninsula, military bases and research stations established there may also be contributing as secondary sources of PFCs in the Antarctic ecosystem

The aim of this study was to generate information for the understanding of its biology and fishery. Reproductive aspects (time of reproduction, size at maturity [TPM], sex ratio), relationship Length-Weight, growth and rate of exploitation were studied in chiochio landed in Pucallpa ports between 2008 and 2012. Data of length frequency distribution were used to estimate the proportion of individuals below the estimated landed TPM. Also, information from 2011 was used to determine the growth parameters (Loe, K and t0), natural mortality (M) for fishing (F) and total (Z), and estimate the exploitation rate (E). The results showed that «chiochio» spawns during the transition to increasing, and reaches the TPM at 1 year of age with 12.2 cm total length (LT). The Length-Weight equation was different in males and females in 4 of the 5 five analyzed years (p<0.05). Growth parameters of von Bertalanffy equation were Loe=22.58 cm, K=0.66 yr-1, t0=-0.26, M=1.45 yr-1, F=1.73 years-1, Z=3.18 years-1. The exploitation rate was E=0.54, indicating that «chiochio» was in phase of optimal exploitation but requires control actions on landing sizes due to the presence of recruit
