    Integration of FHIR to Facilitate Electronic Case Reporting: Results from a Pilot Study

    Current approaches to gathering sexually transmitted infection (STI) case information for surveillance efforts are inefficient and lead to underreporting of disease burden. Electronic health information systems offer an opportunity to improve how STI case information can be gathered and reported to public health authorities. To test the feasibility of a standards-based application designed to automate STI case information collection and reporting, we conducted a pilot study where electronic laboratory messages triggered a FHIR-based application to query a patient’s electronic health record for details needed for an electronic case report (eCR). Out of 214 cases observed during a one week period, 181 (84.6%) could be successfully confirmed automatically using the FHIR-based application. Data quality and information representation challenges were identified that will require collaborative efforts to improve the structure of electronic clinical messages as well as the robustness of the FHIR application

    A Compact Five-Channel VLF Wave Receiver for CubeSat Missions

    Very low frequency (VLF) waves play an important role in controlling the evolution of energetic electron distributions in near-Earth space. This paper describes the design of a VLF receiver for the Climatology of Anthropogenic and Natural VLF Wave Activity in Space (CANVAS) CubeSat mission, designed to make continuous observations of VLF waves in low-Earth orbit originating from lightning and ground-based transmitters. The CANVAS VLF receiver will observe five components of VLF waves in the 0.3–40 kHz frequency range, using three orthogonal magnetic search coils deployed on the end of a 1-meter carbon fiber boom and four deployable electric field antennas operated as two orthogonal dipoles. Together, these five wave components will be used to calculate real and imaginary spectral matrix components using real-time fast Fourier transforms calculated in an onboard FPGA. Spectral matrix components will be averaged to obtain 1 second time resolution and frequency resolution better than 10%. The averaged spectral matrix will be used to determine the complete set of wave parameters, including Poynting flux, polarization, planarity, and k-vector direction. CANVAS is currently in the manufacturing and assembly phase and is planned to launch at the end of 2022

    Motor Performance and Quality of Life in a Community Exercise Program for Parkinson Disease

    We investigated the effect of a comprehensive community program composed of exercise, mindfulness practice, and education on motor function and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD). Thirty-six participants completed physical and quality-of-life assessments independently at baseline and 12 months. Physical assessments showed stability or improvement in functional mobility, integrated strength, and walking ability over the 1-year interval. PDQ-39 measures showed improvement in 6 of 8 indices: mobility, activities of daily living, emotional well-being, stigma reduction, social support, and bodily discomfort. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of exercise, mindfulness, and education in community and group settings

    Energy Impacts of Water Based Recreation

    The overall objective of the study reported here was to determine to what extent energy accounting could supplement and/or complement economic benfit/cost analyses of water management projects and to specifically examine the energy impacts of water based recreation. The energy accounting literature was carefully reviewed and an energy accounting methodology applicable to water management was devised. Data pertaining to receation at five reservoirs in Utah were assembled from visitation recoreds and on-site surveys. Energy requirements for site construction, travel to and from the recreation site, and recreation at the site were estimated. It was determined that energy devoted to water based recreation is not inconsequential. As much energy is devoted to recreation at Lake Powell alone as is required for all of production agriculture in Utah. It is suggested that while the models developed in this study could be used with confidence in the preparation of energy impact statements the authors are not persuaded energy accounting provides additional information to water use planners beyong that obtainable from traditional economic analysis

    Criteria for the diagnosis of corticobasal degeneration

    Current criteria for the clinical diagnosis of pathologically confirmed corticobasal degeneration (CBD) no longer reflect the expanding understanding of this disease and its clinicopathologic correlations. An international consortium of behavioral neurology, neuropsychology, and movement disorders specialists developed new criteria based on consensus and a systematic literature review. Clinical diagnoses (early or late) were identified for 267 nonoverlapping pathologically confirmed CBD cases from published reports and brain banks. Combined with consensus, 4 CBD phenotypes emerged: corticobasal syndrome (CBS), frontal behavioral-spatial syndrome (FBS), nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (naPPA), and progressive supranuclear palsy syndrome (PSPS). Clinical features of CBD cases were extracted from descriptions of 209 brain bank and published patients, providing a comprehensive description of CBD and correcting common misconceptions. Clinical CBD phenotypes and features were combined to create 2 sets of criteria: more specific clinical research criteria for probable CBD and broader criteria for possible CBD that are more inclusive but have a higher chance to detect other tau-based pathologies. Probable CBD criteria require insidious onset and gradual progression for at least 1 year, age at onset ≥50 years, no similar family history or known tau mutations, and a clinical phenotype of probable CBS or either FBS or naPPA with at least 1 CBS feature. The possible CBD category uses similar criteria but has no restrictions on age or family history, allows tau mutations, permits less rigorous phenotype fulfillment, and includes a PSPS phenotype. Future validation and refinement of the proposed criteria are needed

    The GALEX View of "Boyajian's Star" (KIC 8462852)

    The enigmatic star KIC 8462852, informally known as "Boyajian's Star", has exhibited unexplained variability from both short timescale (days) dimming events, and years-long fading in the Kepler mission. No single physical mechanism has successfully explained these observations to date. Here we investigate the ultraviolet variability of KIC 8462852 on a range of timescales using data from the GALEX mission that occurred contemporaneously with the Kepler mission. The wide wavelength baseline between the Kepler and GALEX data provides a unique constraint on the nature of the variability. Using 1600 seconds of photon-counting data from four GALEX visits spread over 70 days in 2011, we find no coherent NUV variability in the system on 10-100 second or months timescales. Comparing the integrated flux from these 2011 visits to the 2012 NUV flux published in the GALEX-CAUSE Kepler survey, we find a 3% decrease in brightness for KIC 8462852. We find this level of variability is significant, but not necessarily unusual for stars of similar spectral type in the GALEX data. This decrease coincides with the secular optical fading reported by Montet & Simon (2016). We find the multi-wavelength variability is somewhat inconsistent with typical interstellar dust absorption, but instead favors a RV_V = 5.0 ±\pm 0.9 reddening law potentially from circumstellar dust.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, ApJ Accepte
