    High-resolution Spectra of Very Low-Mass Stars

    We present the results of high-resolution (1-0.4A) optical spectroscopy of a sample of very low-mass stars. These data are used to examine the kinematics of the stars at the bottom of the hydrogen-burning main sequence. No evidence is found for a significant difference between the kinematics of the stars in our sample with I-K > 3.5 (MBol > 12.8) and those of more massive M-dwarfs (MBol = 7-10). A spectral atlas at high (0.4A) resolution for M8-M9+ stars is provided, and the equivalent widths of CsI, RbI and Halpha lines present in our spectra are examined. We analyse our data to search for the presence of rapid rotation, and find that the brown dwarf LP 944-20 is a member of the class of ``inactive, rapid rotators''. Such objects seem to be common at and below the hydrogen burning main sequence. It seems that in low-mass/low-temperature dwarf objects either the mechanism which heats the chromosphere, or the mechanism which generates magnetic fields, is greatly suppressed.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure files.     The telemetered radiation information from the satellite 1958 δ2 (Sputnik III) has been analyzed for sixty-two separate passes recorded in College, Alaska. The data indicate a dependence of radiation intensity on altitude in the range 250-500 km. Both the high and low energy components apparently contribute to the overall increase of intensity with altitude, but the presence of a continuous afterglow in the scintillating crystal prevented detailed interpretation of the results.IGY Project No. 32.42 NSF Grant No. Y/32.42/268Ye

    Brown dwarfs in the Hyades and beyond?

    We have used both the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrograph and the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck telescopes to obtain spectra of twelve candidate members of the Hyades cluster identified by Leggett and Hawkins (1988, 1989). All of the objects are chromospherically-active, late-type M-dwarfs, with Hα\alpha equivalent widths varying from 1 to 30\AA. Based on our measured radial velocities, the level of stellar activity and other spectroscopic features, only one of the twelve stars has properties consistent with cluster membership. We consider how this result affects estimates of the luminosity and mass function of the Hyades cluster. Five of the eleven field stars have weak K I 7665/7699\AA and CaH absorption as compared with M-dwarf standards of the same spectral type, suggesting a lower surface gravity. Two of these sources, LH0416+14 and LH0419+15, exhibit significant lithium 6708 \AA absorption. Based partly on parallax measurements by the US Naval Observatory (Harris et al, 1998), we identify all five as likely to be young, pre-main sequence objects in or near the Taurus-Auriga association at distances of between 150 and 250 parsecs.     Diffraction-limited CCD imaging with faint reference stars

    By selecting short exposure images taken using a CCD with negligible readout noise we obtained essentially diffraction-limited 810 nm images of faint objects using nearby reference stars brighter than I=16 at a 2.56 m telescope. The FWHM of the isoplanatic patch for the technique is found to be 50 arcseconds, providing ~20% sky coverage around suitable reference stars.Comment: 4 page letter accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Flux rope, hyperbolic flux tube, and late EUV phases in a non-eruptive circular-ribbon flare

    We present a detailed study of a confined circular flare dynamics associated with 3 UV late phases in order to understand more precisely which topological elements are present and how they constrain the dynamics of the flare. We perform a non-linear force free field extrapolation of the confined flare observed with the HMI and AIA instruments onboard SDO. From the 3D magnetic field we compute the squashing factor and we analyse its distribution. Conjointly, we analyse the AIA EUV light curves and images in order to identify the post-flare loops, their temporal and thermal evolution. By combining both analysis we are able to propose a detailed scenario that explains the dynamics of the flare. Our topological analysis shows that in addition to a null-point topology with the fan separatrix, the spine lines and its surrounding Quasi-Separatix Layers halo (typical for a circular flare), a flux rope and its hyperbolic flux tube (HFT) are enclosed below the null. By comparing the magnetic field topology and the EUV post-flare loops we obtain an almost perfect match 1) between the footpoints of the separatrices and the EUV 1600~\AA{} ribbons and 2) between the HFT's field line footpoints and bright spots observed inside the circular ribbons. We showed, for the first time in a confined flare, that magnetic reconnection occured initially at the HFT, below the flux rope. Reconnection at the null point between the flux rope and the overlying field is only initiated in a second phase. In addition, we showed that the EUV late phase observed after the main flare episode are caused by the cooling loops of different length which have all reconnected at the null point during the impulsive phase.Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics, in pres

    The community involvement of nursing and medical practitioners in KwaZulu-Natal

    BackgroundThe basis of the health system in South Africa is purported to be primary health care (PHC), as defined by the Alma Ata Declaration of 1978. This approach emphasises community involvement in all health-related activities, but it would appear that a very limited or selective PHC approach is actually being pursued in South Africa, without meaningful community participation or ownership. This study explores the involvement of exemplary medical and nursing clinical practitioners in non-clinical community-wide activities in terms of the primary health care approach, which demands a broader scope of practice than primary medical care.MethodsThe objectives of the study were to identify exemplary medical and nurse practitioners in primary health care, to document their practices and perceptions with regard to their community involvement, to analyse the common themes arising from the findings, and to present recommendations based on the findings. Seventeen primary care clinicians in KwaZulu-Natal, half of whom were professional nurses and the rest medical practitioners, were purposively selected through their district managers. A team of four medical students was trained to collect the data and interviewed the subjects in their places of work using open-ended questions. The interviews were recorded, translated where necessary, and transcribed. Content analysis was carried out as a team, with the identification of major and minor themes.ResultsThe findings of this study were consistent with studies from other countries, with some interesting differences. The major themes that emerged from the data included the wide range of activities that subjects were involved in, the importance of relationships, the context of poverty, the frustrations of this kind of work, and the respondents' motivations. These are illustrated by numerous verbatim quotes from the respondents. Minor themes were the roles that the respondents play in the community, the difficulty of obtaining funding, and experiences in starting up. Significantly, the fact that the role of clinicians in the community emerged as only a minor theme rather than a major theme in this study indicates the absence of expectation and policy in this area of practice in South Africa. In the light of the supposed centrality of the primary healthcare approach in the national health system, this is a serious gap. ConclusionThe lack of a clearly defined role in the community outside of the clinical role that deals with the individual patient who presents for care is discussed in relation to the policy of the primary health care approach. The concept of community-oriented primary care provides a framework for a more systematic approach to community engagement, and this study serves as a basis for further research into the subject.For full text, click here:SA Fam Pract 2006;48(8):16-16

    The Proper Motion of SgrA*: I. First VLBA Results

    We observed Sgr A* and two extragalactic radio sources nearby in angle with the VLBA over a period of two years and measured relative positions with an accuracy approaching 0.1 mas. The apparent proper motion of Sgr A* relative to J1745-283 is 5.90 +/- 0.4 mas/yr, almost entirely in the plane of the Galaxy. The effects of the orbit of the Sun around the Galactic Center can account for this motion, and any residual proper motion of Sgr A*, with respect to extragalactic sources, is less than about 20 km/s. Assuming that Sgr A* is at rest at the center of the Galaxy, we estimate that the circular rotation speed in the Galaxy at the position of the Sun is 219 +/- 20 km/s, scaled by Ro/8.0 kpc. Current observations are consistent with Sgr A* containing all of the nearly 2.6 x 10^6 solar masses, deduced from stellar proper motions, in the form of a massive black hole. While the low luminosity of Sgr A*, for example, might possibly have come from a contact binary containing of order 10 solar masses, the lack of substantial motion rules out a "stellar" origin for Sgr A*. The very slow speed of Sgr A* yields a lower limit to the mass of Sgr A* of about 1,000 solar masses. Even for this mass, Sgr A* appears to be radiating at less than 0.1 percent of its Eddington limit
