Computerized Simulation of Case Management with Deaf Clients: Tools for Instruction and Evaluation of Information Gathering Strategies

    Get PDF
Many counselors and case managers working with individuals who are deaf have incomplete knowledge about the complex factors that affect case management, learning primarily through trail-and-error what information is really necessary to develop effective rehabilitation plans. Computer-based training using simulations of cases involving management of deaf individuals allows trainees to try out various strategies and receive expert feedback about “best practices” for the simulated cases without harming actual clients. A brief description of simulations currently utilized in rehabilitation training is presented, the development of a deafness-specific case is described and current training applications using that simulation are discussed. The development, validation, and dissemination of a library of cases by the Northern Illinois University Research ad Training Center on Traditionally Underserved Persons Who are Deaf is in progress. Possible future directions for case management simulation with clients who are deaf are discussed

COLONIZATION OF NORTHERN LOUISIANA BY THE MEDITERRANEAN GECKO, HEMIDACTYLUS TURCICUS

The Mediterranean Gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus, is known to have colonized nearly every state in the southern United States. In Louisiana, the Mediterranean Gecko has been documented in many of the southern parishes, but records for the northern portion of the state are limited. We sampled northern Louisiana parishes to document the presence of the Mediterranean Gecko. We sampled a total of 21 parishes in northern Louisiana and found geckos in 17 of those parishes, 16 of which represent new distribution records for the species. This indicates a significant range expansion of this introduced species throughout northern Louisiana. Geckos were found across a temperature range of 14.0–28.0°C and had a strong association with buildings. The species’ affinity for anthropogenic association and the continual nature of anthropogenic expansion facilitate the high vagility of this species. The result is a successful colonization throughout much of Louisiana and likely continued range expansion throughout the southern United States

Analog MAP decoder for (8,4) hamming code in subthreshold CMOS

Journal ArticleAn all-MOS analog tail-biting MAP decoder is presented for an (8,4) Hamming code. The decoder implements a probability propagation algorithm using subthreshold CMOS networks. Physical results verify the expected behavior of the decoder and demonstrate robustness of analog decoding circuits

The Unusual Variability of the Large Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebula RPJ 053059-683542

We present images and light curves of the bipolar Planetary Nebula RPJ 053059-683542 that was discovered in the Reid-Parker AAO/UKST H-alpha survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The emission from this object appears entirely nebular, with the central star apparently obscured by a central band of absorption that bisects the nebula. The light curves, which were derived from images from the SuperMACHO project at CTIO, showed significant, spatially resolved variability over the period 2002 January through 2005 December. Remarkably, the emission from the two bright lobes of the nebula vary either independently, or similarly but with a phase lag of at least one year. The optical spectra show a low level of nebular excitation, and only modest N enrichment. Infrared photometry from the 2MASS and SAGE surveys indicates the presence of a significant quantity of dust. The available data imply that the central star has a close binary companion, and that the system has undergone some kind of outburst event that caused the nebular emission to first brighten and then fade. Further monitoring, high-resolution imaging, and detailed IR polarimetry and spectroscopy would uncover the nature of this nebula and the unseen ionizing source.Comment: Accepted for ApJ Letters; 6 page
