    High redshift radio galaxies and divergence from the CMB dipole

    Previous studies have found our velocity in the rest frame of radio galaxies at high redshift to be substantially larger than that inferred from the CMB temperature dipole anisotropy. We construct a full sky catalogue NVSUMSS, by merging the NVSS and SUMSS catalogues and removing local sources by various means including cross-correlating with the 2MRS catalogue. We take into account both aberration and Doppler boost to deduce our velocity from the hemispherical number count asymmetry, as well as via a 3-dimensional linear estimator. Both the magnitude and direction depend on cuts made to the catalogue, e.g. on the lowest source flux, however these effects are small. With the hemispheric number count asymmetry method we obtain a velocity of 1729 ±\pm 187 km/s i.e. about 4 times larger than that obtained from the CMB dipole, but close in direction, towards RA=149 ±\pm 2 degree, DEC = -17 ±\pm 12 degree. With the 3-dimensional estimator, the derived velocity is 1355 ±\pm 174 km/s towards RA=141 ±\pm 11 degree, DEC=-9 ±\pm 10 degree. We assess the statistical significance of these results by constructing catalogues of random distributions and show that they are at best significant at the 2.81σ2.81 \sigma (99.95% confidence) level.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 10 tables; matches published versio

    Evaluation of second year MBBS students perceptions and experiences towards tutorials as a teaching-learning method in pharmacology

    Background: The purpose of teaching is to facilitate effective learning. The commonly used instructional methods in pharmacology include lectures, case studies or clinical pharmacology problems, practicals, and tutorials. The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions and experiences of second-year MBBS students towards tutorials in pharmacology.Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out by the department of pharmacology at Kamineni Academy of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (KAMSRC), Hyderabad, Telangana, India. A total of 120 second-year MBBS students were interviewed with a structured questionnaire on tutorials. Responses to questions were expressed as percentage (%) of the total number of participants.Results: 88% of the learners admitted that it was necessary to have tutorials and only 57% accepted for it to be made mandatory. On being questioned to mention reasons for not attending tutorials, 58% stated that they were not prepared and lazy and 22% learners were afraid of individual questioning. 80% suggested that the teacher and students should mutually decide the topic for tutorials. When asked about the environment during the tutorials, 48% students pointed out that only a few students dominated the tutorials. However, 34% considered that the atmosphere was friendly. On being enquired upon how the tutorial was conducted, 83% noticed that both the teacher and students participated during the tutorial session.Conclusions: The suggestions based on feedback from learners, should be kept in mind while conducting tutorials to make it fruitful experience for MBBS students

    Multi-Antenna OFDM System Using Coded Wavelet with Weighted Beamforming

    yesA major drawback in deploying beamforming scheme in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is to obtain the optimal weights that are associated with information beams. Two beam weighting methods, namely co-phasing and singular vector decomposition (SVD), are considered to maximize the signal beams for such beamforming scheme. Initially the system performance with and without interleaving is investigated using coded fast Fourier transform (FFT)-OFDM and wavelet-based OFDM. The two beamforming schemes are applied to the wavelet-based OFDM as confirmed to perform better than the FFT-OFDM. It is found that the beam-weight by SVD improves the performance of the system by about 2dB at the expense of the co-phasing method. The capacity performances of the weighting methods are also compared and discussed

    Using muon rings for the optical throughput calibration of the SST-1M prototype for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are ground-based instruments devoted to the study of very high energy gamma-rays coming from space. The detection technique consists of observing images created by the Cherenkov light emitted when gamma rays, or more generally cosmic rays, propagate through the atmosphere. While in the case of protons or gamma-rays the images present a filled and more or less elongated shape, energetic muons penetrating the atmosphere are visualised as characteristic circular rings or arcs. A relatively simple analysis of the ring images allows the reconstruction of all the relevant parameters of the detected muons, such as the energy, the impact parameter, and the incoming direction, with the final aim to use them to calibrate the total optical throughput of the given IACT telescope.
