On the Origin of Gravity and the Laws of Newton
Starting from first principles and general assumptions Newton's law of
gravitation is shown to arise naturally and unavoidably in a theory in which
space is emergent through a holographic scenario. Gravity is explained as an
entropic force caused by changes in the information associated with the
positions of material bodies. A relativistic generalization of the presented
arguments directly leads to the Einstein equations. When space is emergent even
Newton's law of inertia needs to be explained. The equivalence principle leads
us to conclude that it is actually this law of inertia whose origin is
entropic.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figure
Gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangians and black hole entropy
We analyze the problem of defining the black hole entropy when Chern-Simons
terms are present in the action. Extending previous works, we define a general
procedure, valid in any odd dimensions both for purely gravitational CS terms
and for mixed gauge-gravitational ones. The final formula is very similar to
Wald's original formula valid for covariant actions, with a significant
modification. Notwithstanding an apparent violation of covariance we argue that
the entropy formula is indeed covariant.Comment: 39 page
Black-hole dynamics in BHT massive gravity
Using an exact Vaidya-type null-dust solution, we study the area and entropy
laws for dynamical black holes defined by a future outer trapping horizon in
(2+1)-dimensional Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity. We consider
the theory admitting a degenerate (anti-)de Sitter vacuum and pure BHT gravity.
It is shown that, while the area of a black hole decreases by the injection of
a null dust with positive energy density in several cases, the Wald-Kodama
dynamical entropy always increases.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Conformally rescaled spacetimes and Hawking radiation
We study various derivations of Hawking radiation in conformally rescaled
metrics. We focus on two important properties, the location of the horizon
under a conformal transformation and its associated temperature. We find that
the production of Hawking radiation cannot be associated in all cases to the
trapping horizon because its location is not invariant under a conformal
transformation. We also find evidence that the temperature of the Hawking
radiation should transform simply under a conformal transformation, being
invariant for asymptotic observers in the limit that the conformal
transformation factor is unity at their location.Comment: 22 pages, version submitted to journa
Motivating learners through information literacy
This paper is included in the Information Literacy: Key to an Inclusive Society, the proceedings of the European Conference on Information Literacy, 2016. The paper introduces a model for creating information literacy learning activities that motivate students. The model draws from informed learning, an approach to information literacy that emphasizes the role that information plays in fostering learning about a subject. Self-determination theory, a motivational theory that focuses on enabling self-determined learners, is applied within the informed learning framework. The results of the investigation outline characteristics of motivating learning activities that enable learning subject content through engagement with information. The model is intended to be used by librarians when working with classroom teachers to foster greater student learning gains through creative and reflective engagement with information
Generalized Painleve-Gullstrand descriptions of Kerr-Newman black holes
Generalized Painleve-Gullstrand metrics are explicitly constructed for the
Kerr-Newman family of charged rotating black holes. These descriptions are free
of all coordinate singularities; moreover, unlike the Doran and other proposed
metrics, an extra tunable function is introduced to ensure all variables in the
metrics remain real for all values of the mass M, charge Q, angular momentum
aM, and cosmological constant \Lambda > - 3/(a^2). To describe fermions in
Kerr-Newman spacetimes, the stronger requirement of non-singular vierbein
one-forms at the horizon(s) is imposed and coordinate singularities are
eliminated by local Lorentz boosts. Other known vierbein fields of Kerr-Newman
black holes are analysed and discussed; and it is revealed that some of these
descriptions are actually not related by physical Lorentz transformations to
the original Kerr-Newman expression in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates - which is
the reason complex components appear (for certain ranges of the radial
coordinate) in these metrics. As an application of our constructions the
correct effective Hawking temperature for Kerr black holes is derived with the
method of Parikh and Wilczek.Comment: 5 pages; extended to include application to derivation of Hawking

Logarithmic correction to BH entropy as Noether charge
We consider the role of the type-A trace anomaly in static black hole
solutions to semiclassical Einstein equation in four dimensions. Via Wald's
Noether charge formalism, we compute the contribution to the entropy coming
from the anomaly induced effective action and unveil a logarithmic correction
to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
The corrected entropy is given by a seemingly universal formula involving the
coefficient of the type-A trace anomaly, the Euler characteristic of the
horizon and the value at the horizon of the solution to the uniformization
problem for Q-curvature. Two instances are examined in detail: Schwarzschild
and a four-dimensional massless topological black hole. We also find agreement
with the logarithmic correction due to one-loop contribution of conformal
fields in the Schwarzschild background.Comment: 14 pages, JHEP styl
New supersymmetric higher-derivative couplings: Full N=2 superspace does not count!
An extended class of N=2 locally supersymmetric invariants with
higher-derivative couplings based on full superspace integrals, is constructed.
These invariants may depend on unrestricted chiral supermultiplets, on vector
supermultiplets and on the Weyl supermultiplet. Supersymmetry is realized
off-shell. A non-renormalization theorem is proven according to which none of
these invariants can contribute to the entropy and electric charges of BPS
black holes. Some of these invariants may be relevant for topological string
deformations.Comment: 24 pages, v2: version published in JHEP, one reference added and

Black Hole Hair Removal: Non-linear Analysis
BMPV black holes in flat transverse space and in Taub-NUT space have
identical near horizon geometries but different microscopic degeneracies. It
has been proposed that this difference can be accounted for by different
contribution to the degeneracies of these black holes from hair modes, --
degrees of freedom living outside the horizon. In this paper we explicitly
construct the hair modes of these two black holes as finite bosonic and
fermionic deformations of the black hole solution satisfying the full
non-linear equations of motion of supergravity and preserving the supersymmetry
of the original solutions. Special care is taken to ensure that these solutions
do not have any curvature singularity at the future horizon when viewed as the
full ten dimensional geometry. We show that after removing the contribution due
to the hair degrees of freedom from the microscopic partition function, the
partition functions of the two black holes agree.Comment: 40 pages, LaTe
Higher Curvature Gravity and the Holographic fluid dual to flat spacetime
Recent works have demonstrated that one can construct a (d+2) dimensional
solution of the vacuum Einstein equations that is dual to a (d+1) dimensional
fluid satisfying the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In one important
example, the fluid lives on a fixed timelike surface in the flat Rindler
spacetime associated with an accelerated observer. In this paper, we show that
the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the fluid takes the universal
value 1/4\pi in a wide class of higher curvature generalizations to Einstein
gravity. Unlike the fluid dual to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes,
here the choice of gravitational dynamics only affects the second order
transport coefficients. We explicitly calculate these in five-dimensional
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity and discuss the implications of our results.Comment: 13 pages; v2: modified abstract, added references; v3: added
