Phonons and Magnetic Excitations in Mott-Insulator LaTiO
The polarized Raman spectra of stoichiometric LaTiO (T K) were
measured between 6 and 300 K. In contrast to earlier report on half-metallic
LaTiO, neither strong background scattering, nor Fano shape of the
Raman lines was observed. The high frequency phonon line at 655 cm
exhibits anomalous softening below T: a signature for structural
rearrangement. The assignment of the Raman lines was done by comparison to the
calculations of lattice dynamics and the nature of structural changes upon
magnetic ordering are discussed. The broad Raman band, which appears in the
antiferromagnetic phase, is assigned to two-magnon scattering. The estimated
superexchange constant meV is in excellent agreement with the
result of neutron scattering studies.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Anderson localization of polaron states
Using the vanishing of the typical polaron tunneling rate as an indicator of
the breakdown of itinerancy, we study the localization of polaron states in a
generic model for a disordered polaronic material. We find that extremely small
disorder causes an Anderson localization of small polaron states. However, the
ratio between the critical disorder strength needed to localize all states in
the polaron band and the renormalized bandwidth is not necessarily smaller than
for a bare electron.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Bimodal distribution of free tropospheric ozone over the tropical western Pacific revealed by airborne observations
A recent airborne field campaign over the remote western Pacific obtained the first intensive in situ ozone sampling over the warm pool region from oceanic surface to 15-km altitude (near 360-K potential temperature level). The new data set quantifies ozone in the tropical tropopause layer under significant influence of convective outflow. The analysis further reveals a bimodal distribution of free tropospheric ozone mixing ratio. A primary mode, narrowly distributed around 20-ppbv, dominates the troposphere from the surface to 15-km. A secondary mode, broadly distributed with a 60-ppbv modal value, is prominent between 3 and 8-km (320-K to 340-K potential temperature levels). The latter mode occurs as persistent layers of ozone-rich drier air and is characterized by relative humidity under 45%. Possible controlling mechanisms are discussed. These findings provide new insight into the physical interpretation of the >S>-shaped mean ozone profiles in the tropics.Peer Reviewe
Management dilemmas in acute pulmonary embolism
Background. Physicians treating acute pulmonary embolism (PE) are faced with difficult management decisions while specific guidance from recent guidelines may be absent.
Methods. Fourteen clinical dilemmas were identified by physicians and haematologists with specific interests in acute and chronic PE. Current evidence was reviewed and a practical approach suggested.
Results. Management dilemmas discussed include: sub-massive PE, PE following recent stroke or surgery, thrombolysis dosing and use in cardiac arrest, surgical or catheter-based therapy, failure to respond to initial thrombolysis, PE in pregnancy, right atrial thrombus, role of caval filter insertion, incidental and sub-segmental PE, differentiating acute from chronic PE, early discharge and novel oral anticoagulants.
Conclusion. The suggested approaches are based on a review of the available evidence and guidelines and on our clinical experience. Management in an individual patient requires clinical assessment of risks and benefits and also depends on local availability of therapeutic interventions
Spin oscillations in transient diffusion of a spin pulse in n-type semiconductor quantum wells
By studying the time and spatial evolution of a pulse of the spin
polarization in -type semiconductor quantum wells, we highlight the
importance of the off-diagonal spin coherence in spin diffusion and transport.
Spin oscillations and spin polarization reverse along the the direction of spin
diffusion in the absence of the applied magnetic field are predicted from our
investigation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Electrostatically Shielded Quantum Confined Stark Effect Inside Polar Nanostructures
The effect of electrostatic shielding of the polarization fields in nanostructures at high carrier densities is studied. A simplified analytical model, employing screened, exponentially decaying polarization potentials, localized at the edges of a QW, is introduced for the ES-shielded quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE). Wave function trapping within the Debye-length edge-potential causes blue shifting of energy levels and gradual elimination of the QCSE red-shifting with increasing carrier density. The increase in the eâh wave function overlap and the decrease of the radiative emission time are, however, delayed until the âedge-localizationâ energy exceeds the peak-voltage of the charged layer. Then the wave function center shifts to the middle of the QW, and behavior becomes similar to that of an unbiased square QW. Our theoretical estimates of the radiative emission time show a complete elimination of the QCSE at doping densities â„1020 cmâ3, in quantitative agreement with experimental measurements
Interaction of quasilocal harmonic modes and boson peak in glasses
The direct proportionality relation between the boson peak maximum in
glasses, , and the Ioffe-Regel crossover frequency for phonons,
, is established. For several investigated materials . At the frequency the mean free path of the
phonons becomes equal to their wavelength because of strong resonant
scattering on quasilocal harmonic oscillators. Above this frequency phonons
cease to exist. We prove that the established correlation between
and holds in the general case and is a direct consequence of
bilinear coupling of quasilocal oscillators with the strain field.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 1 figur
Polarized interacting exciton gas in quantum wells and bulk semiconductors
We develop a theory to calculate exciton binding energies of both two- and
three-dimensional spin polarized exciton gases within a mean field approach.
Our method allows the analysis of recent experiments showing the importance of
the polarization and intensity of the excitation light on the exciton
luminescence of GaAs quantum wells. We study the breaking of the spin
degeneracy observed at high exciton density . Energy
level splitting betwen spin +1 and spin -1 is shown to be due to many-body
inter-excitonic exchange while the spin relaxation time is controlled by
intra-exciton exchange.Comment: Revtex, 4 figures sent by fax upon request by e-mai
(New) Bulgarian Enlighteners and Ambassadors? The Reinvention of National Identity in Times of Crisis
Drawing on empirical data from 37 Bulgarian students and young professionals in the UK, this article explores the intersection of the discourses produced by the European crises and migrants' national identity. In Bulgaria, the crisis narrative is embedded in the arguably neverâending democratic transition, manifested in socioâeconomic instability and political volatility. Simultaneously, âBrexit Britainâ is enveloped in strong Eurosceptic sentiments, propelled by a combination of austerity measures and intensified Eastern European migratory flows. Both contexts subject Bulgarian migrants to stigmatizing representations. Looking at migrants' everyday practices, the data reveals that young Bulgarians draw on the related ideas of the ânewâ Enlightener and Ambassador to counterbalance negative discourses. Thus, the article explores the meanings and significance attributed to the Enlighteners and the Ambassadors, arguing that the participants engage in âsocial creativityâ and âindividual mobilityâ strategies that lead to reinvention of national identity
Confirmation of Anomalous Dynamical Arrest in attractive colloids: a molecular dynamics study
Previous theoretical, along with early simulation and experimental, studies
have indicated that particles with a short-ranged attraction exhibit a range of
new dynamical arrest phenomena. These include very pronounced reentrance in the
dynamical arrest curve, a logarithmic singularity in the density correlation
functions, and the existence of `attractive' and `repulsive' glasses. Here we
carry out extensive molecular dynamics calculations on dense systems
interacting via a square-well potential. This is one of the simplest systems
with the required properties, and may be regarded as canonical for interpreting
the phase diagram, and now also the dynamical arrest. We confirm the
theoretical predictions for re-entrance, logarithmic singularity, and give the
first direct evidence of the coexistence, independent of theory, of the two
coexisting glasses. We now regard the previous predictions of these phenomena
as having been established.Comment: 15 pages,15 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
