    Obtaining the Weyl tensor from the Bel-Robinson tensor

    The algebraic study of the Bel-Robinson tensor proposed and initiated in a previous work (Gen. Relativ. Gravit. {\bf 41}, see ref [11]) is achieved. The canonical form of the different algebraic types is obtained in terms of Bel-Robinson eigen-tensors. An algorithmic determination of the Weyl tensor from the Bel-Robinson tensor is presented.Comment: 21 page

    By comparing an optically selected sample of narrow lines AGN with an X-ray selected sample of AGN we have recently derived an estimate of the intrinsic (i.e. before absorption) 2-10 keV luminosity function (XLF) of Compton Thick AGNs.     On the Weyl transverse frames in type I spacetimes

    We apply a covariant and generic procedure to obtain explicit expressions of the transverse frames that a type I spacetime admits in terms of an arbitrary initial frame. We also present a simple and general algorithm to obtain the Weyl scalars Ψ2T\Psi_2^T, Ψ0T\Psi_0^T and Ψ4T\Psi_4^T associated with these transverse frames.     Forward-backward equations for nonlinear propagation in axially-invariant optical systems

    We present a novel general framework to deal with forward and backward components of the electromagnetic field in axially-invariant nonlinear optical systems, which include those having any type of linear or nonlinear transverse inhomogeneities. With a minimum amount of approximations, we obtain a system of two first-order equations for forward and backward components explicitly showing the nonlinear couplings among them. The modal approach used allows for an effective reduction of the dimensionality of the original problem from 3+1 (three spatial dimensions plus one time dimension) to 1+1 (one spatial dimension plus one frequency dimension). The new equations can be written in a spinor Dirac-like form, out of which conserved quantities can be calculated in an elegant manner. Finally, these new equations inherently incorporate spatio-temporal couplings, so that they can be easily particularized to deal with purely temporal or purely spatial effects. Nonlinear forward pulse propagation and non-paraxial evolution of spatial structures are analyzed as examples.Comment: 11 page

    The emerging population of pulsar wind nebulae in hard X-rays

    The hard X-ray synchrotron emission from pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) probes energetic particles, closely related to the pulsar injection power at the present time. INTEGRAL has disclosed the yet poorly known population of hard X-ray pulsar/PWN systems.     XMM-Newton Observation of the Black Hole Microquasar GRS 1758-258

    The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory pointed the galactic black hole candidate and microquasar GRS 1758-258 in September 2000 for about 10 ks during a program devoted to the scan of the Galactic Center regions. Preliminary results from EPIC MOS camera data are presented here. The data indicate that the source underwent a state transition from its standard low-hard state to an intermediate state.     Fractura de Essex-Lopresti bilateral: caso clínico

    El síndrome de Essex-Lopresti es una patología poco frecuente que en muchas ocasiones pasa des - apercibida en fase aguda. Su tratamiento se basa en estabilizar la cabeza del radio para evitar su migración proxi - mal, no existiendo protocolos claros acerca de la actuación a nivel distal, de la membrana interósea o el papel del acortamiento del cúbito. Presentamos un caso de afectación a nivel de ambos antebrazos, uno en forma aguda con un tratamiento mediante osteosíntesis y otro crónico en el que se ha realizado una artroplastia de la cabeza de radio, un acortamiento del cúbito y una técnica de Adams para la estabilización distal, ambos con excelente resultado. En nuestra opinión la estabilización de la articulación radio cubital distal debe ser parte del tratamiento del síndrome de Essex-Lopresti y la técnica de Adams constituye una alternativa en aquellos casos en los que la reconstrucción directa no es posible.Essex-Lopresti syndrome is an uncommon condition which in many occasions it goes unnoticed in acute phase. Its treatment is based on stabilize the head of the radius to prevent its proximal migration but there is no clear protocols on the performance at the distal radio-ulnar joint, the interosseous membrane or the role of the shortening of the ulna. We present a case report of effects at the levels of both forearms, one in acute form, with a treatment with osteosynthesis and another that has been treated with an arthroplasty of the radius head, a shor - tening of the ulna and an Adams ? technique for distal stabilization, both with excellent results. In our opinion, the stabilization of the distal radio-ulnar joint should be part of the treatment of Essex-Lopresti syndrome and the Adams ? technique is an alternative in those cases in which the direct reconstruction is not possible

    A New X-Ray Flare from the Galactic Nucleus Detected with the XMM-Newton Photon Imaging Cameras

    Sgr A*, the compact radio source, believed to be the counterpart of the massive black hole at the galactic nucleus, was observed to undergo rapid and intense flaring activity in X-rays with Chandra in October 2000. We report here the detection with XMM-Newton EPIC cameras of the early phase of a similar X-ray flare from this source, which occurred on September 4, 2001. The source 2-10 keV luminosity increased by a factor about 20 to reach a level of 4 10^{34} erg s^{-1} in a time interval of about 900 s, just before the end of the observation. The data indicate that the source spectrum was hard during the flare. This XMM-Newton observation confirms the results obtained by Chandra and suggests that, in Sgr A*, rapid and intense X-ray flaring is not a rare event. This can constrain the emission mechanism models proposed for this source, and also implies that the crucial multiwavelength observation programs planned to explore the behaviour of the radio/sub-mm and hard X-ray/gamma-ray emissions during the X-ray flares, have a good chance of success.Comment: 18 pages, 6 color figures, final version, accepted on October 24, 2002, to appear in ApJ, v584 n2 ApJ February 20, 2003 issu
