This paper reports on changes in the soil bacterial community from a petroleum zone of Argentina. Changes were observed in a microcosm test which was subject to contamination with hexadecane. The determination of hydrocarbons and bacterial counts were performed weekly. Changes in bacterial diversity were determined by the analysis of membrane fatty acids (FAMEs), identified and quantified by gas chromatography using according to MIDI parameters. It was observed that contamination with hexadecane cause a disturbance in the soil leading to a change in the bacterial community structure.

Evaluation of life-span of potentially pathogenic bacteria in marine sediments Abstract: The present study had the purpose of determining the survival period of bacteria which represent a biological risk and are indicators of contamination. Inter-tide marine sediment samples were taken at two beaches of the Comodoro Rivadavia city in Argentine; one the beaches was submitted to contamination due to household effluents, and the other without proof of evident contamination. These samples were initially characterized by bacterial counts in different culture media (TSA, VRB, TCBS, bile esculin agar and cetrimide agar) and by their identification. A study of the survival of the target bacteria in microcosm was also done, monitored by bacterial counts and identification of these bacteria. The main results indicated that there was a marked difference in the composition of the bacterial community between the two samples. In the contaminated sample the bacterial genus were Aeromonas, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Escherichia, Ochrobactum and Klebsiella, and in the non-contaminated beach Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Micrococcus, Photobacterium and Vibrio. The microcosm assay showed that after 65 days the bacterial community of the contaminated beach was similar to that of the non-contaminated beach sediment, indicating that by withdrawing the contamination source, the affected zone can probably be recovered

</span

This study aims to isolate and identify culturable marine bacteria from 4 locations in the San Jorge Gulf. A total of 1,532 strains were isolated using oligotrophic, heterotrophic and hydrocarbon- degrading bacteria media, and identified with reference to bacterial fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles. Gram-negative bacteria were the most abundant, Pseudoalteromonas comprised 17% of the isolated bacteria, followed by Pseudomonas, with 11.14%. The Gram-positive bacteria genera identified were Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Micrococcus. In addition, those bacteria able to degrade hydrocarbons were: Arthrobacter, Dietzia, Acinetobacter, Microbacterium, Micrococcus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Pseudoalteromonas

Initial invasive or conservative strategy for stable coronary disease

BACKGROUND Among patients with stable coronary disease and moderate or severe ischemia, whether clinical outcomes are better in those who receive an invasive intervention plus medical therapy than in those who receive medical therapy alone is uncertain. METHODS We randomly assigned 5179 patients with moderate or severe ischemia to an initial invasive strategy (angiography and revascularization when feasible) and medical therapy or to an initial conservative strategy of medical therapy alone and angiography if medical therapy failed. The primary outcome was a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or hospitalization for unstable angina, heart failure, or resuscitated cardiac arrest. A key secondary outcome was death from cardiovascular causes or myocardial infarction. RESULTS Over a median of 3.2 years, 318 primary outcome events occurred in the invasive-strategy group and 352 occurred in the conservative-strategy group. At 6 months, the cumulative event rate was 5.3% in the invasive-strategy group and 3.4% in the conservative-strategy group (difference, 1.9 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.8 to 3.0); at 5 years, the cumulative event rate was 16.4% and 18.2%, respectively (difference, 121.8 percentage points; 95% CI, 124.7 to 1.0). Results were similar with respect to the key secondary outcome. The incidence of the primary outcome was sensitive to the definition of myocardial infarction; a secondary analysis yielded more procedural myocardial infarctions of uncertain clinical importance. There were 145 deaths in the invasive-strategy group and 144 deaths in the conservative-strategy group (hazard ratio, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.32). CONCLUSIONS Among patients with stable coronary disease and moderate or severe ischemia, we did not find evidence that an initial invasive strategy, as compared with an initial conservative strategy, reduced the risk of ischemic cardiovascular events or death from any cause over a median of 3.2 years. The trial findings were sensitive to the definition of myocardial infarction that was used
