Background Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is one of the most common causes of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a known cause of hyperlipidemia. There is a strong correlation between coronary and mesenteric vessel atherosclerosis. Acute mesenteric ischemia is a cause of intestinal hemorrhagic infarction. Case history We present an autopsy case of 35-year-old male who presented with features of obstruction and edema with previously undetected hypothyroidism. Conclusion Hypothyroidism associated with atherosclerosis can lead to fatal intestinal gangrene as corroborated by this autopsy case. Key words –Hypothyroidism, intestinal gangrene, autopsy, atherosclerosi

Effect of Maternal Sensitivity on Language Acquisition of Multiples

The purpose of this study was to examine language acquisition and development in multiple birth children compared to singleton children in order to examine how decreased maternal sensitivity amongst mothers of multiple compared to mothers of singletons affects language acquisition skills in children.. The first phase of research for this study started with research on maternal sensitivity, specifically differing levels of it amongst mothers of different types of children, either by singletons of multiples, and potential causes for these differing levels of maternal sensitivity. The second phase focused on language skills of multiple and singletons at a young age and comparing them together. The third phase looked at exactly how maternal sensitivity could affect language development and correlations between the two. The final phase detailed implications for the results found. The results of the study revealed that there are significant correlations between maternal sensitivity and language acquisition. Maternal sensitivity is markedly decreased in mothers of multiples due to stress of raising multiple and the overall inability to give as much time to each child in a multiple as a mother of a singleton would be able to which researchers have seen to lead to language delays amongst children of a multiple. By identifying that decreased maternal sensitivity is inevitable amongst mothers of multiples and the important of it to language development, we can find more ways to support the mothers to overcome some of the stress and create special language programs for multiple to overcome any early language acquisition delays to aid their transition in grade school.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1123/thumbnail.jp

Signal Requirement for Memory Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes.

Generation of an optimal immune response against a pathogen leads to protection from disease. Cytokines orchestrate a complex but well coordinated interaction between the cells of the immune system. Precise and sequential signals are required for the induction of a particular cellular function. In this study, I have analyzed the minimal signal requirement for memory cytotoxic T lymphocyte (mCTL) effector function. I have used human peripheral blood T cells as the source of influenza virus specific mCTL precursors, and influenza virus infected and formaldehyde fixed cells as antigen presenters in our assay system. Using this model, we have identified an essential requirement for antigenic restimulation in influenza virus specific mCTL induction. Further I show here, using known recombinant cytokines, that IL-4, IL-7, IL-10 and IL-12 can function as CTL differentiation factors. Unlike many previous reports, in our assay system, we did not find any direct cytotoxicity induction by IL-2, but it has modulatory role on IL-7, IL-10 and IL-12 mediated induction of cytotoxicity. In contrast to IL-2, IL-4 has both positive and negative regulatory effects on cytotoxicity induction and depends critically on the time of addition of cytokines after antigen encounter

Hypothyroidism, or myxedema, is the clinical syndrome that results from decreased production of T4 and T3.Most patients have primary hypothyroidism .The etiology of adult primary hypothyroidism includes autoimmune hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), post – ablation after radio-active iodine, thyroid surgery and drugs such as Amiodarone and Lithium. Manifestations are variable and proportionate to the degree and duration of thyroid hormone deficiency as well as age of onset. The presence of goiter is common in younger patients (Hashimoto’s) but often absent in the elderly. Clinical features of hypothyroidism are insidious and often missed, particularly in the elderly

ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION OF ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS IN A SOLAR CAR WITH APPLICATIONS TO GATO DEL SOL III-IV

    Get PDF
Gato del Sol III, was powered by a solar array of 480 Silicon mono-crystalline photovoltaic cells. Maximum Power Point trackers efficiently made use of these cells and tracked the optimal load. The cells were mounted on a fiber glass and foam core composite shell. The shell rides on a lightweight aluminum space frame chassis, which is powered by a 95% efficient brushless DC motor. Gato del Sol IV was the University of Kentucky Solar Car Team’s (UKSCT) entry into the American Solar Car Challenge (ASC) 2010 event. The car makes use of 310 high density lithium-polymer batteries to account for a 5 kWh pack, enough to travel over 75 miles at 40 mph without power generated by the array. An in-house battery protection system and charge balancing system ensure safe and efficient use of the batteries. Various electrical sub-systems on the car communicate among each other via Controller Area Network (CAN). This real time data is then transmitted to an external computer via RF communication for data collection

Plants have been used by women since the beginning of time in an attempt to control their fertility. The information was passed from mother to daughter and generation to generation. The use of abortifacient plants is a common practice among the interior tribal people of Andhra Pradesh. In the present study a list of 33 plant species belonging to29 genera and 26 families are used as abortifacient. The study was conducted among the 33 tribal groups of Andhra Pradesh. The mode of preparation, administration and the dosage of the drugs use are collected from the tribal doctors and lady tribal doctors to terminate the early stage of pregnancy

A questionnaire-based survey among clinicians and postgraduates regarding knowledge, awareness and practice of p-drug in Government General Hospital, Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada

Background: P-drug is a personal or preferred or priority choice drug of a clinician. The aim of the study is to evaluate knowledge, awareness, practice of p-drug which helps the clinician to prescribe drugs rationally. Methods: The study was a prospective cross-sectional pre-validated questionnaire-based study conducted in Government General Hospital, Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada. During the study period a total of 300 members were enrolled and instructed to fill the questionnaire forms. These filled forms were collected and data were analyzed. Results: Out of 300 members, 240 filled the questionnaire, and these forms were evaluated. Among them 16.6% were aware of p-drug, 27.5% were aware of P treatment, 32.5% were not including FDC’s in their p drug list, 28.33% were aware of advantages of prescribing P drug and 82% felt that teaching programs were needed for preparing p drug list. Conclusions: For promoting and achieving rational use of medicine, P drug concept is one of the milestones. As few were aware of p-drug concept, institutional teaching review board should conduct teaching programs regarding p drug concept

Ayurvedic literature highlights the symptoms of Pakshagata as Chesta Nivritti either in Vama or Dakshina Parshwa along with Ruja and Vakstambha. Pakshaghata being one among the Vataja Nanatmaja Vyadhi is considered as Mahavata Vyadhi, it can occur either due to Dhatukshaya or Margavarana. Pakshaghata can be correlated with Hemiplegia, which results from cerebrovascular accident - stroke. Stroke is defined as sudden onset of neurologic deficit from vascular mechanism 85% is ischemic and 15% are primary hemorrhages. According to the World Health Organization, 15 million people suffer from stroke world wide each year, of these, 5 million die and another 5 million are permanently disabled. Modern science believes that the brain tissues once damaged completely cannot be repaired by the therapies leading to permanent neurological deficit. Hence, the disease has a poor prognosis, making the person disabled dependent. In present article deals with aetiopathogenesis, clinical features and the role of Avarana and management of disease the Pakshagata from Ayurvedic classics
