A Deep Multicolor Survey I. Imaging Observations and Catalog of Stellar Objects
We have used the KPNO 4-meter Mayall telescope to image 0.83 square degrees
of sky in six fields at high galactic latitude in six filters spanning
3000-10000\AA\ to magnitude limits ranging from 22.1 to 23.8. We have assembled
a catalog of 21,375 stellar objects detected in the fields for use primarily in
conducting a multicolor search for quasars. This paper describes the data
reduction techniques used on the CCD data, the methods used to construct the
stellar object catalog, and the simulations performed to understand its

Global Maps of Science based on the new Web-of-Science Categories
In August 2011, Thomson Reuters launched version 5 of the Science and Social
Science Citation Index in the Web of Science (WoS). Among other things, the 222
ISI Subject Categories (SCs) for these two databases in version 4 of WoS were
renamed and extended to 225 WoS Categories (WCs). A new set of 151 Subject
Categories (SCs) was added, but at a higher level of aggregation. Since we
previously used the ISI SCs as the baseline for a global map in Pajek (Rafols
et al., 2010) and brought this facility online (at
http://www.leydesdorff.net/overlaytoolkit), we recalibrated this map for the
new WC categories using the Journal Citation Reports 2010. In the new
installation, the base maps can also be made using VOSviewer (Van Eck &

Phosphorylation of ezrin on Thr567 is required for the synergistic activation of cell spreading by EPAC1 and protein kinase A in HEK293T cells
Recent studies have demonstrated that the actin binding protein, ezrin, and the cAMP-sensor, EPAC1, cooperate to induce cell spreading in response to elevations in intracellular cAMP. To investigate the mechanisms underlying these effects we generated a model of EPAC1-dependent cell spreading based on the stable transfection of EPAC1 into HEK293T (HEK293T–EPAC1) cells. We found that direct activation of EPAC1 with the EPAC-selective analogue, 8-pCPT-2′-O-Me-cAMP (007), promoted cell spreading in these cells. In addition, co-activation of EPAC1 and PKA, with a combination of the adenylate cyclase activator, forskolin, and the cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor, rolipram, was found to synergistically enhance cell spreading, in association with cortical actin bundling and mobilisation of ezrin to the plasma membrane. PKA activation was also associated with phosphorylation of ezrin on Thr567, as detected by an electrophoretic band mobility shift during SDS-PAGE. Inhibition of PKA activity blocked ezrin phosphorylation and reduced the cell spreading response to cAMP elevation to levels induced by EPAC1-activation alone. Transfection of HEK293T–EPAC1 cells with inhibitory ezrin mutants lacking the key PKA phosphorylation site, ezrin-Thr567Ala, or the ability to associate with actin, ezrin-Arg579Ala, promoted cell arborisation and blocked the ability of EPAC1 and PKA to further promote cell spreading. The PKA phospho-mimetic mutants of ezrin, ezrin-Thr567Asp had no effect on EPAC1-driven cell spreading. Our results indicate that association of ezrin with the actin cytoskeleton and phosphorylation on Thr567 are required, but not sufficient, for PKA and EPAC1 to synergistically promote cell spreading following elevations in intracellular cAMP
The Effects of Antimicrobial Mouthwashes on Systemic Disease: What Is the Evidence?
The potential association between antimicrobial mouthwash use and systemic health has gained attention in recent years with reports highlighting how some common systemic conditions are influenced by the use of different types of mouthwashes. In this context, links between mouthwash use and cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, oral cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and preeclampsia have been proposed, albeit with limited levels of evidence. Chlorhexidine mouthwash in particular has been the most widely studied agent while available data on other types of over-the-counter mouthwashes are generally scarce. Furthermore, there is currently no evidence-based recommendations on the appropriate use of mouthwashes during pregnancy. This article will present the current evidence on the association between mouthwash use and the aforementioned conditions with emphasis on the mechanisms that may underlie such an association
Renormalization of Tamm-Dancoff Integral Equations
During the last few years, interest has arisen in using light-front
Tamm-Dancoff field theory to describe relativistic bound states for theories
such as QCD. Unfortunately, difficult renormalization problems stand in the
way. We introduce a general, non-perturbative approach to renormalization that
is well suited for the ultraviolet and, presumably, the infrared divergences
found in these systems. We reexpress the renormalization problem in terms of a
set of coupled inhomogeneous integral equations, the ``counterterm equation.''
The solution of this equation provides a kernel for the Tamm-Dancoff integral
equations which generates states that are independent of any cutoffs. We also
introduce a Rayleigh-Ritz approach to numerical solution of the counterterm
equation. Using our approach to renormalization, we examine several ultraviolet
divergent models. Finally, we use the Rayleigh-Ritz approach to find the

Organizing the innovation process : complementarities in innovation networking
This paper contributes to the developing literature on complementarities in organizational design. We test for the existence of complementarities in the use of external networking between stages of the innovation process in a sample of UK and German manufacturing plants. Our evidence suggests some differences between the UK and Germany in terms of the optimal combination of innovation activities in which to implement external networking. Broadly, there is more evidence of complementarities in the case of Germany, with the exception of the product engineering stage. By contrast, the UK exhibits generally strong evidence of substitutability in external networking in different stages, except between the identification of new products and product design and development stages. These findings suggest that previous studies indicating strong complementarity between internal and external knowledge sources have provided only part of the picture of the strategic dilemmas facing firms
Concentrations of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB’s), Chlorinated Pesticides, and Heavy Metals and Other Elements in Tissues of Belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, from Cook Inlet
Tissues from Cook Inlet beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, that were collected as part of the Alaska Marine Mammal Tissue Archival Project were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s), chlorinated pesticides, and heavy metals and other elements. Concentrations of total PCB’s (ΣPCB’s), total DDT (ΣDDT), chlordane compounds, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dieldrin, mirex, toxaphene, and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) measured in Cook Inlet beluga blubber were compared with those reported for belugas from two Arctic Alaska locations (Point Hope and Point Lay), Greenland, Arctic Canada, and the highly contaminated stock from the St. Lawrence estuary in eastern Canada. The Arctic and Cook Inlet belugas had much lower concentrations (ΣPCB’s and ΣDDT were an order of magnitude lower) than those found in animals from the St. Lawrence estuary. The Cook Inlet belugas had the lowest concentrations of all (ΣPCB’s aver-aged 1.49 ± 0.70 and 0.79 ± 0.56 mg/kg wet mass, and ΣDDT averaged 1.35 ± 0.73 and 0.59 ± 0.45 mg/kg in males and females, respectively). Concentrations in the blubber of the Cook Inlet males were significantly lower than those found in the males of the Arctic Alaska belugas (ΣPCB’s and ΣDDT were about half). The lower levels in the Cook Inlet animals might be due to differences in contaminant sources, food web differences, or different age distributions among the animals sampled. Cook Inlet males had higher mean and median concentrations than did females, a result attributable to the transfer of these compounds from mother to calf during pregnancy and during lactation. Liver concentrations of cadmium and mercury were lower in the Cook Inlet belugas (most cadmium values were <1 mg/kg and mercury values were 0.704–11.42 mg/kg wet mass), but copper levels were significantly higher in the Cook Inlet animals (3.97–123.8 mg/kg wet mass) than in Arctic Alaska animals and similar to those reported for belugas from Hudson Bay. Although total mercury levels were the lowest in the Cook Inlet population, methylmercury concentrations were similar among all three groups of the Alaska animals examined (0.34–2.11 mg/kg wet mass). A Deep Multicolor Survey II. Initial Spectroscopy and Comparison With Expected Quasar Number Counts
We have used the KPNO 4-meter Mayall telescope to image 0.83 square degrees
of sky in six fields at high galactic latitude in six filters spanning
3000-10000\AA\ to magnitude limits ranging from 22.1 to 23.8. As a first use of
this database, we have conducted a multicolor survey for quasars. We discuss
various methods of selecting outliers in different color-color diagrams and
multicolor space that have been used to identify quasars at all redshifts from
their colors alone. We discuss the initial results of our program of
spectroscopic identification which has so far resulted in the identification of
over forty faint quasars, including one at z4, a similar number of compact
narrow-emission-line galaxies, and a number of unusual and potentially
interesting stars. We use these spectroscopic results, along with extensive
simulations of quasar spectra, to study the efficiency of our candidate
selection procedures. Finally, we compare the number counts of our quasars and
quasar candidates to the expected numbers based on previous studies of the
quasar luminosity function. The agreement of our observations with these
expectations is good in most cases. However, we do estimate that our survey
contains more quasars with B21 and z2.3 than expected from the results of
Koo \& Kron (1988) and more z3 quasars than expected from the results of
Warren, Hewett, \& Osmer (1994), both at the 3\ level. Additional
spectroscopic observations will be required to confirm or refute these
