A usabilidade em software educativo: princípios e técnicas

A usabilidade é uma área de estudo que tem vindo a crescer nos últimos anos, tendo sido a Web a sua principal impulsionadora. O termo engenharia da usabilidade passou a fazer parte do vocabulário dos programadores e designers gráficos, sendo aplicado a uma área de estudo com muitos anos que é a interacção homem-máquina, área esta que surgiu com as primeiras interfaces gráficas. Num projecto de software a usabilidade deve ser uma preocupação constante durante todo o processo de desenvolvimento. Esta deve ser vista a montante e a jusante do processo de desenvolvimento. A sua análise a montante significa que o desenho da interface deve ser baseado em princípios heurísticos, ou seja, as regras definidas. A usabilidade a jusante refere-se aos testes de campo efectuados com os utilizadores, validando ou não os princípios heurísticos. Neste artigo serão abordados os princípios heurísticos em usabilidade, assim como deverão ser conduzidos os testes com os utilizadores e a forma de avaliar esses resultados. Como caso de estudo será apresentada uma Intranet educacional

Entrepreneurship education for european students: a way to exchange students and teaching staff

Participation in Erasmus Programme in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme will improve the excellence of education in Institutions of Higher Education by providing the possibility of bilateral student and teaching staff exchange with leading European academic institutions. In additional, another important aspect of Erasmus is the possibility of organizing Intensive Programmes (IP) where students and teachers from different academic European Institutions will study specific topics in a compact way - short time. Is common knowledge that the experience of studying abroad enriches students' lives in the academic and professional fields. Teaching Staff exchanges have similar beneficial effects. In order to improve the quality and to increase the volume of student and teaching staff mobility in Europe, to develop the quality and to increase the volume of multilateral cooperation between higher education institutions in Europe was born this Intensive Programme entitled Entrepreneurship Education for European Students, already approved by the Portugal National Agency for the Management of the Lifelong Learning Programme and will be operational next academic year. So, this paper describes the Entrepreneurship Education for European Students Intensive Programme as playing an important role in the lives of participants and in the development of Higher Education in Europe

Broadband access technologies

Broadband technologies have view great growth over the past decade. But, the main part of this development and growth has been in the core networks, and the capacity of the access network to delivery broadband services remains as a challenge ("last mile problem"). The access network remains a bottleneck in terms of the bandwidth and service quality it affords the end user. By other side, the access network is much more spread geographically and covers larger areas. Then, this part of the network is usually the most expensive component in terms of capital investment and OAM cost. Some studies reefer that this networks required 70% of the total investment. Several access technologies can be used in this part of the network, which can be used to resolve the bandwidth bottleneck and the investment problem: xDSL, HFC, FTTx, FWA, WiMAX, PLC, Satellite, etc. This paper presents a methodology and a tool that compare and evaluate broadband access technologies. The paper presents a techno-economic analysis of eight broadband technologies for access networks: digital subscriber line (DSL), hybrid fiber coax (HFC), power line communications (PLC), fiber to the home (FTTH), fiber to the curb (FTTC), fiber to the cabinet (FTTCab), and wireless alternatives such as WiMAX and satellite. Several actors (such operators, service providers, …) could use this tool to compare different technological solutions, forecast deployment costs, compare different scenarios, etc

Características dos profissionais em sistemas de informação: região de Trás-os-Montes (Portugal)

The profile of the Information Systems Professionals remains a constant challenge for schools and employers. Constant environmental, technological and organizational changes may raise difficulties in keeping the curriculum of Information Systems updated. Thus, the knowledge and the abilities demanded of professionals are in constant transformation. School plays an essential role in the process of providing professionals with the necessary skills to operate in the Information Society. Their competence depends, largely, on an appropriate curriculum that must be adequate to the organizations necessities. This paper identifies the skills required for the IS professionals in the organizations located in the region of “Trás-os-Montes” (Portugal). This work is based in a survey, realized in 51 organizations from “Trás-os-Montes”. The main objective was the identification of the skills expected from the employers for the IS professional. Metamorphosis: um referencial para o comércio electrónico

A afirmação gradual da sociedade da informação é um processo irreversível. As motivações, de ordem social e tecnológica, que estiveram na génese da sociedade da informação alastram-se, agora, a outros paradigmas. Os domínios organizacionais e sociais são, também eles, um alvo privilegiado da sociedade da informação, cujas consequências se traduzem no reconhecimento de uma nova forma comercial, denominada Comércio Electrónico. O Comércio Electrónico reclama uma revisão profunda das teorias, modelos, conceitos e atitudes comerciais. A revisão da actividade comercial, à luz das novas possibilidades e oportunidades da tecnologia carece de um referencial inovador, que não atenda exclusivamente aos aspectos de ordem tecnológica, mas que possibilite uma visão integrada deste mesmo paradigma com os aspectos de carácter social, organizacional e comercial. A ausência de ferramentas “Conceptuais” de suporte à concretização da actividade de comércio electrónico motivou a concepção de um referencial, denominado Metamorphosis. No âmbito do referencial deve destacar-se, de entre outros contributos, a proposta de uma arquitectura e respectivos modelos de ordem orgânica, funcional e tecnológica, a partir dos quais foi possível proceder à elaboração de um protótipo de comércio electrónico. A realização de um caso de estudo “RuralNet”, desenvolvido e testado no ambiente real de negócio, permitiu que se analisassem e avaliassem, em contexto, as possibilidades e potencialidades tecnológicas, constituindo, assim, uma mais valia, tendo em vista o enriquecimento do conhecimento científico nos domínios dos sistemas de informação e a validação das construções propostas no âmbito do referencial Metamorphosis. The gradual affirmation of the information society is an irreversible process. The social and technological motivations which were in the genesis of the information society are now extended to other paradigms. The social and organizational domains are themselves a main target of the information society, whose consequences originate the recognition of a new commercial way, known as Electronic Commerce. The Electronic Commerce claims for itself a deep revision of the theories, models, concepts and commercial attitudes. As far as new technological possibilities and opportunities are concerned, the revision of commercial activity needs an innovator reference , which not only deals with technological aspects but also with an integrated vision of this own paradigm with social, organizational and commercial aspects. The absence of the needed “conceptual” tools to the realization of the Electronic Commerce activity has caused the conception of a referential, named Metamorphosis. As far as the referential is concerned, we must emphasize, among other contributes, the proposal of an architecture and respective models of organic, functional, and technologic order, which were in the basis of the elaboration of an Electronic Commerce prototype. The realization of a case study ”RuralNet”, developed and tested in a real management environment allowed the analysis and evaluation, in context, of the possibilities of the technological potentialities reinforcing the scientific knowledge in the information systems domains and the validation of the proposed constructions as far as Metamorphosis is concerned

Intranet domus: ambiente virtual de aprendizagem e de gestão administrativa

Este artigo apresenta um projecto de adopção das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) nos processos educativos e administrativos na Escola Superior de Tecnologia e de Gestão de Bragança (ESTiG). A introdução das TIC no ensino iniciou-se em 2000, com o desenvolvimento de uma plataforma de e-learning intitulada: Domus cursos online. Devido à fraca adesão por parte dos docentes e alunos, definiu-se uma nova estratégia de integração do e-learning com os serviços administrativos, de forma a massificar o uso das TIC em todos os processos. O resultado obtido foi uma plataforma tecnológica, a Intranet Domus, que integra tecnologias de e-learning e de e-management, tornando mais eficientes os processos de ensino, aprendizagem e gestão administrativa. Da sala de aula virtual ao campus virtual

plataforma de e-learning intitulada Domus – cursos online, permitindo a criação de ambientes virtuais de aprendizagem (sala de aulas virtual). Apesar de ser uma plataforma tecnologicamente evoluída e com características idênticas a outras plataformas comerciais, a sua adesão por parte dos docentes foi relativamente baixa. Após ter sido efectuado um estudo dos resultados, partiu-se para o desenvolvimento de uma Intranet com o objectivo da integração de todos os sistemas e aplicações, criando assim um campus virtual institucional. O resultado obtido foi uma plataforma tecnológica que integra, tecnologias de e-learning e de e-management, tornando mais eficientes os processos de ensino, aprendizagem e gestão administrativa. A componente de e-learning possui as características de uma sala de aulas virtual, permitindo a disponibilização de conteúdos, recursos, informações e serviços de comunicação. A componente de e-management assenta na filosofia de uma Intranet organizacional, disponibilizando serviços on-line que permitem uma optimização de tempo e recursos. Deste modo os principais objectivos da Intranet da ESTIG são: · Concepção de um sistema de informação integrado, de tecnologias e-learning, e-management, workflow e groupware, tendo em vista a automatização dos processos administrativos, decisórios e pedagógicos da Escola; · Pretende-se ainda com a Intranet uma gestão mais eficiente dos recursos e da logística educativa, bem como promover a adopção de novas estratégias educativas ao nível do ensino superior em Portugal

Domus mobile: plataforma de suporte ao mobile-learning

Este artigo aborda o desenvolvimento da Intranet Domus, plataforma que integra tecnologias de e-learning e de emanagement e mais especificamente a componente de dispositivos móveis. Com a definição da estratégia de integração dos vários sistemas numa única plataforma, conseguiu-se uma adesão muito significativa por parte dos docentes e alunos. A segunda fase do projecto, que se encontra em desenvolvimento, consiste em tornar a plataforma compatível com o SCORM e incentivar o desenvolvimento de objectos de aprendizagem reutilizáveis. Esta plataforma possui também uma área de acesso a dispositivos móveis, que permite o suporte do mobile-learning, além de disponibilizar uma aplicação de mobilidade dos conteúdos em modo offline. O objectivo desta nova plataforma é de permitir a ubiquidade da aprendizagem e do acesso à informação e ao conhecimento, independentemente do dispositivo, do local e da existência ou não de acesso à Internet

Collaborative learning activities supported by intelligent agents

The changes introduced by the Bologna Process in the educational paradigm, moving from a lecturer centered paradigm to a learner centered paradigm, involves a more supported learning process based on learning outcomes and the adoption of new pedagogical methodologies. To improve the learning process and facilitate the student support, we propose the adoption of intelligent agents in learning environments, with the mission to follow closely the student in their learning activities, coaching, advertising for difficulties, adapting the context to the learner profile, and making a connection between the student and the lecturer. The adoption of artificial intelligence in education has the goal to improve the learning process adapting the contents and the learning environment to the student profile. The student profile is based on her learning style, learning needs, goals and choices

Creating web based communities using XML portals

The fast growing of Internet in several domains, originates the appearance of numerous virtual communities, sometimes named Web based communities, of information and knowledge exchange. The adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in education and the creation of educational virtual communities don’t follow the growing of Internet in the other sectors. The success of virtual communities could be found on the facility to communicate, the easy access to resources and the continuous contribution of the members to the knowledge of the community. To be fully adopted in education is essential to change the educational paradigm and integrate ICTs in all the education and administration processes. This paper presents the principal conduct lines to develop Web based communities in higher education using XML Portals, integrating the several services and resources of the institution and promote the communication and knowledge exchange between students, teachers and staff
