    Flux calibration of the AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey

    The AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS Hα\alpha Survey (SHS) was, when completed in 2003, a powerful addition to extant wide-field surveys. The combination of areal coverage, spatial resolution and sensitivity in a narrow imaging band, still marks it out today as an excellent resource for the astronomical community. The 233 separate fields are available online in digital form, with each field covering 25 square degrees. The SHS has been the motivation for equivalent surveys in the north, and new digital Hα\alpha surveys now beginning in the south such as VPHAS+. It has been the foundation of many important discovery projects with the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg Hα\alpha planetary nebula project being a particularly successful example. However, the full potential of the SHS has been hampered by lack of a clear route to acceptable flux calibration from the base photographic data. We have determined the calibration factors for 170 individual SHS fields, and present a direct pathway to the measurement of integrated Hα\alpha fluxes and surface brightnesses for resolved nebulae detected in the SHS. We also include a catalogue of integrated Hα\alpha fluxes for >>100 planetary and other nebulae measured from the SHS, and use these data to show that fluxes, accurate to ±\pm 0.10 - 0.14 dex (∼\sim25-35 per cent), can be obtained from these fields. For the remaining 63 fields, a mean calibration factor of 12.0 counts pix−1^{-1} R−1^{-1} can be used, allowing the determination of reasonable integrated fluxes accurate to better than ±\pm0.2 dex (∼\sim50 per cent). We outline the procedures involved and the caveats that need to be appreciated in achieving such flux measurements.     Hydrological Alteration along the Missouri River Basin: A Time Series Approach

    Human alteration of large rivers is commonplace, often resulting in significant changes in flow characteristics. We used a time series approach to examine daily mean flow data from locations throughout the mainstem Missouri River. Data from a pre-alteration period (1925–1948) were compared with a post-alteration period (1967–1996), with separate analyses conducted using either data from the entire year or restricted to the spring fish spawning period (1 April–30 June). Daily mean flows were significantly higher during the post-alteration period at all locations. Flow variability was markedly reduced during the post-alteration period as a probable result of flow regulation and climatological shifts. Daily mean flow during the spring fish spawning period was significantly lower during the post-alteration period at the most highly altered locations in the middle portion of the river, but unchanged at the least altered locations in the upper and lower port ions of the river. Our data also corroborate other analyses, using alternate statistical approaches, that suggest similar changes to the Missouri River system. Our results suggest human alterations on the Missouri River, particularly in the middle portion most strongly affected by impoundments and channelization, have resulted in changes to the natural flow regime

    A Unified Dynamic Programming Framework for the Analysis of Interacting Nucleic Acid Strands: Enhanced Models, Scalability, and Speed

    Dynamic programming algorithms within the NUPACK software suite enable analysis of nucleic acid sequences over complex and test tube ensembles containing arbitrary numbers of interacting strand species, serving the needs of researchers in molecular programming, nucleic acid nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and across the life sciences. Here, to enhance the underlying physical model, ensure scalability for large calculations, and achieve dramatic speedups when calculating diverse physical quantities over complex and test tube ensembles, we introduce a unified dynamic programming framework that combines three ingredients: (1) recursions that specify the dependencies between subproblems and incorporate the details of the structural ensemble and the free energy model, (2) evaluation algebras that define the mathematical form of each subproblem, (3) operation orders that specify the computational trajectory through the dependency graph of subproblems. The physical model is enhanced using new recursions that operate over the complex ensemble including coaxial and dangle stacking subensembles. The recursions are coded generically and then compiled with a quantity-specific evaluation algebra and operation order to generate an executable for each physical quantity: partition function, equilibrium base-pairing probabilities, MFE energy and proxy structure, suboptimal proxy structures, and Boltzmann sampled structures. For large complexes (e.g., 30 000 nt), scalability is achieved for partition function calculations using an overflow-safe evaluation algebra, and for equilibrium base-pairing probabilities using a backtrack-free operation order. A new blockwise operation order that treats subcomplex blocks for the complex species in a test tube ensemble enables dramatic speedups (e.g., 20–120× ) using vectorization and caching. With these performance enhancements, equilibrium analysis of substantial test tube ensembles can be performed in ≤ 1 min on a single computational core (e.g., partition function and equilibrium concentration for all complex species of up to six strands formed from two strand species of 300 nt each, or for all complex species of up to two strands formed from 80 strand species of 100 nt each). A new sampling algorithm simultaneously samples multiple structures from the complex ensemble to yield speedups of an order of magnitude or more as the number of structures increases above ≈10³. These advances are available within the NUPACK 4.0 code base (www.nupack.org) which can be flexibly scripted using the all-new NUPACK Python module

    Efficiency of spinal anesthesia versus general anesthesia for lumbar spinal surgery: a retrospective analysis of 544 patients.

    BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown varying results in selected outcomes when directly comparing spinal anesthesia to general in lumbar surgery. Some studies have shown reduced surgical time, postoperative pain, time in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), incidence of urinary retention, postoperative nausea, and more favorable cost-effectiveness with spinal anesthesia. Despite these results, the current literature has also shown contradictory results in between-group comparisons. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed by querying the electronic medical record database for surgeries performed by a single surgeon between 2007 and 2011 using procedural codes 63030 for diskectomy and 63047 for laminectomy: 544 lumbar laminectomy and diskectomy surgeries were identified, with 183 undergoing general anesthesia and 361 undergoing spinal anesthesia (SA). Linear and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify differences in blood loss, operative time, time from entering the operating room (OR) until incision, time from bandage placement to exiting the OR, total anesthesia time, PACU time, and total hospital stay. Secondary outcomes of interest included incidence of postoperative spinal hematoma and death, incidence of paraparesis, plegia, post-dural puncture headache, and paresthesia, among the SA patients. RESULTS: SA was associated with significantly lower operative time, blood loss, total anesthesia time, time from entering the OR until incision, time from bandage placement until exiting the OR, and total duration of hospital stay, but a longer stay in the PACU. The SA group experienced one spinal hematoma, which was evacuated without any long-term neurological deficits, and neither group experienced a death. The SA group had no episodes of paraparesis or plegia, post-dural puncture headaches, or episodes of persistent postoperative paresthesia or weakness. CONCLUSION: SA is effective for use in patients undergoing elective lumbar laminectomy and/or diskectomy spinal surgery, and was shown to be the more expedient anesthetic choice in the perioperative setting

    Spatial distribution and residency of green and loggerhead sea turtles using coastal reef habitats in southern Mozambique

    Sea turtles spend the majority of their immature and adult lives in foraging grounds, yet few studies have examined their abundance and condition in these areas when compared to more accessible nesting beach habitats. Here, a 5-year dive log, photo-identification (photo-ID) and surface encounter datasets were used to investigate the abundance, individual movements and distribution of sea turtles along 40 km of coastal reefs in southern Mozambique. A generalized linear model (GLM) was constructed with turtle sightings as the response variable. Habitat type, year and day of the year, as well as underwater visibility, were significant predictors of turtle sightings. However, only 8% of the total variance was explained by the model, indicating that other variables have a significant influence on turtle movement and distribution. Photo-ID differentiated 22 individual green turtles Chelonia mydas and 42 loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta from 323 photo-ID encounters. A majority (64%) of the photos could be used to identify the individual. Although residency times of up to 1152 days were calculated for juvenile green turtles, a low overall resighting rate indicates that individual turtles either had large home ranges or were transient to the area. Surface encounter data revealed a preference for nearshore shallow waters and an increased abundance close to reef systems. Sea turtles' preferences for shallow, nearshore habitats are likely to increase the encounter risk with opportunistic and targeted artisanal fishers who catch sea turtles
