    The Historical Origin of the Pulfrich Effect: A Serendipitous Astronomic Observation at the Border of the Milky Way

    Interested in star movement the founder of Heidelberg's astronomy observatory, Max Wolf, faced the dilemma that the hitherto used 'Blinkmikrosop' of his Institution was damaged beyond repair following the first world war. He therefore used a new method, stereoscopy, to systematically classify 1053 moving stars between 1915 and 1918. The key problem Wolf identified with the new method was that variation in brightness of the same star on different photographic plates gave rise to an illusory movement. This was a particularly frequent problem with smaller stars close to the very bright Milky Way such as those in the proximity of Cygni or fade-out stars such as R Coronae Borealis. Carl Pulfrich, the world-leading expert on stereoscopy at the time, picked up immediately on the technical limitations Wolf published on stereoscopy in 1920. Pulfrich, who was blind in one eye, could not see the effect himself and designed a projection device to demonstrate Wolf's serendipitous observation to an audience which was equipped with a monocular neutral density filter. Pulfrich performed detailed investigations on the relationship of spatial perception and object movement, naming the phenomenon stereo effect, but it became widely known as the Pulfrich effect. The neuro-anatomical basis of the Pulfrich effect lies in the joint encoding of motion and depth within the visual cortex. Recognising Pulfrich effect is relevant for the management of patients in whom pathology of the visual pathways impairs judgment of object movement/position (e.g., in traffic or sport). Fitting a unilateral tinted lens or contact lens in front of the good eye can abolish the problem

    Analysis and simulations of multifrequency induction hardening

    We study a model for induction hardening of steel. The related differential system consists of a time domain vector potential formulation of the Maxwell's equations coupled with an internal energy balance and an ODE for the volume fraction of {\sl austenite}, the high temperature phase in steel. We first solve the initial boundary value problem associated by means of a Schauder fixed point argument coupled with suitable a-priori estimates and regularity results. Moreover, we prove a stability estimate entailing, in particular, uniqueness of solutions for our Cauchy problem. We conclude with some finite element simulations for the coupled system

    Analysis of the boreal forest-tundra ecotone: A test of AVIRIS capabilities in the Eastern Canadian subarctic

    A comparison was conducted between ground reflectance spectra collected in Schefferville, Canada and imaging spectrometer observations acquired by the AVIRIS sensor in a flight of the ER-2 Aircraft over the same region. The high spectral contrasts present in the Canadian Subarctic appeared to provide an effective test of the operational readiness of the AVIRIS sensor. Previous studies show that in this location various land cover materials possess a wide variety of visible/near infrared reflectance properties. Thus, this landscape served as an excellent test for the sensing variabilities of the newly developed AVIRIS sensor. An underlying hypothesis was that the unique visible/near infrared spectral reflectance patterns of Subarctic lichens could be detected from high altitudes by this advanced imaging spectrometer.     This report examines the impact of the COVID disruption on law students and legal education.  Data draw from the responses of over 13,000 law students at 61 law schools that participated in LSSSE in 2021.  The Report also features results from two new LSSSE Modules: The Coping with COVID module, which gathered responses from 1,521 law students and the Experiences with Online Learning module, which highlights responses from 3,450 law students.The report shows that though the core of legal education remained relatively stable and overall satisfaction remained remarkably high, law students were more likely than in years past to be lonely, emotionally exhausted, and to struggle with anxiety and depression.  Furthermore, COVID also deepened ongoing disparities and inequities in legal education.  Vulnerable student populations faced even greater challenges over the past year

    Optimal control for halo orbit missions

    This paper addresses the computation of the required trajectory correction maneuvers (TCM) for a halo orbit space mission to compensate for the launch velocity errors introduced by inaccuracies of the launch vehicle. By combiningdynamical systems theory with optimal control techniques, we produce a portrait of the complex landscape of the trajectory design space. This approach enables parametric studies not available to mission designers a few years ago, such as how the magnitude of the errors and the timingof the first TCM affect the correction ΔV. The impetus for combiningdynamical systems theory and optimal control in this problem arises from design issues for the Genesis Discovery mission being developed for NASA by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory

    Hyperextended Scalar-Tensor Gravity

    We study a general Scalar-Tensor Theory with an arbitrary coupling funtion ω(ϕ)\omega (\phi ) but also an arbitrary dependence of the ``gravitational constant'' G(ϕ)G(\phi ) in the cases in which either one of them, or both, do not admit an analytical inverse, as in the hyperextended inflationary scenario. We present the full set of field equations and study their cosmological behavior. We show that different scalar-tensor theories can be grouped in classes with the same solution for the scalar field.Comment: latex file, To appear in Physical Review

    Active job monitoring in pilots

    Recent developments in high energy physics (HEP) including multi-core jobs and multi-core pilots require data centres to gain a deep understanding of the system to monitor, design, and upgrade computing clusters. Networking is a critical component. Especially the increased usage of data federations, for example in diskless computing centres or as a fall-back solution, relies on WAN connectivity and availability. The specific demands of different experiments and communities, but also the need for identification of misbehaving batch jobs, requires an active monitoring. Existing monitoring tools are not capable of measuring fine-grained information at batch job level. This complicates network-aware scheduling and optimisations. In addition, pilots add another layer of abstraction. They behave like batch systems themselves by managing and executing payloads of jobs internally. The number of real jobs being executed is unknown, as the original batch system has no access to internal information about the scheduling process inside the pilots. Therefore, the comparability of jobs and pilots for predicting run-time behaviour or network performance cannot be ensured. Hence, identifying the actual payload is important. At the GridKa Tier 1 centre a specific tool is in use that allows the monitoring of network traffc information at batch job level. This contribution presents the current monitoring approach and discusses recent e_orts and importance to identify pilots and their substructures inside the batch system. It will also show how to determine monitoring data of specific jobs from identified pilots. Finally, the approach is evaluated
