Correlations for pairs of periodic trajectories for open billiards
In this paper we prove two asymptotic estimates for pairs of closed
trajectories for open billiards similar to those established by Pollicott and
Sharp for closed geodesics on negatively curved compact surfaces. The first of
these estimates holds for general open billiards in any dimension. The more
intricate second estimate is established for open billiards satisfying the so
called Dolgopyat type estimates. This class of billiards includes all open
billiards in the plane and open billiards in satisfying some
additional conditions
Systematic study of deformed nuclei at the drip lines and beyond
An improved prescription for choosing a transformed harmonic oscillator (THO)
basis for use in configuration-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations
is presented. The new HFB+THO framework that follows accurately reproduces the
results of coordinate-space HFB calculations for spherical nuclei, including
those that are weakly bound. Furthermore, it is fully automated, facilitating
its use in systematic investigations of large sets of nuclei throughout the
periodic table. As a first application, we have carried out calculations using
the Skyrme Force SLy4 and volume pairing, with exact particle number projection
following application of the Lipkin-Nogami prescription. Calculations were
performed for all even-even nuclei from the proton drip line to the neutron
drip line having proton numbers Z=2,4,...,108 and neutron numbers
N=2,4,...,188. We focus on nuclei near the neutron drip line and find that
there exist numerous particle-bound even-even nuclei (i.e., nuclei with
negative Fermi energies) that have at the same time negative two-neutron
separation energies. This phenomenon, which was earlier noted for light nuclei,

On The Alice In Wonderland Syndrome With A Case Report
Alice in Wonderland syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by transient distorsion of visual perception, impaired perception of oneâs own body and time sometimes along with derealization and depersonalization. One of the rare visual symptoms of this syndrome is inversion of visual perception, consisting of rotating or inverting the image of the observed environment lasting several seconds or minutes. The transient inversion of visual perception is thought to be the result of dysfunction of the parieto-insular vestibular or parieto-occipital cortex. We present a 6-year-old boy (Đ.Đ.Đ.) who informed his parents about three episodes of ârotation of the imagesâ in front of him in the last several weeks, lasting 1-2 minutes and abruptly disappearing. Conducted neurological status, neuro-ophthalmological examination, electro-encephalography did not show the presence of abnormalities. MRT of the brain revealed the only pathologic finding â mild unilateral (left) lateral ventricular dilatation due to left foramen of Monro stenosis, interpreted as congenital. We hypothesize that mild unilateral hydrocephalus may be an etiological factor in our patient and cause transient cortical dysfunction and visual-spatial imbalance with impaired verticality
Information systems, software engineering, and systems thinking: challenges and opportunities
This article traces past research on the application of the systems approach to information systems development within the disciplines of information systems and software engineering. Their origins historically are related to a number of areas, including general systems theory. While potential improvement of software development practices is linked by some leading experts to the application of more systemic methods, the current state of the practice in software engineering and information systems development shows this is some way from being achieved. The authors propose possible directions for future research and practical work on bringing together both fields with systems thinking
Polyhedral units and network connectivity in calcium aluminosilicate glasses from high-energy x-ray diffraction
Structure factors for Cax/2AlxSi1-xO2 glasses (x=0,0.25,0.5,0.67) extended to
a wave vector of magnitude Q= 40 1/A have been obtained by high-energy x-ray
diffraction. For the first time, it is possible to resolve the contributions of
Si-O, Al-O and Ca-O coordination polyhedra to the experimental atomic pair
distribution functions (PDF). It has been found that both Si and Al are
four-fold coordinated and so participate in a continuous tetrahedral network at
low values of x. The number of network breaking defects in the form of
non-bridging oxygens (NBO's) increases slowly with x until x=0.5 (NBO's ~ 10%
at x=0.5). By x=0.67 the network breaking defects become significant as
evidenced by the significant drop in the average coordination number of Si. By
contrast, Al-O tetrahedra remain free of NBO's and fully integrated in the
Al/Si-O network for all values of x. Calcium maintains a rather uniform
coordination sphere of approximately 5 oxygen atoms for all values of x. The
results suggest that not only Si/Al-O tetrahedra but Ca-O polyhedra, too, play
a role in determining the glassy structure
Low-angle misorientation dependence of the optical properties of InGaAs/InAlAs quantum wells
We investigate the dependence of the low-temperature photoluminescence
linewidths from InP-lattice-matched InGaAs/InAlAs quantum wells on the
low-angle misorientation from the (100) surface of the host InP substrate.
Quantum wells were grown on InP substrates misorientated by 0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6
degrees; 0.4 degrees was found to consistently result in the narrowest peaks,
with the optimal spectral purity of ~4.25 meV found from a 15nm quantum well.
The width of the emission from the 15nm quantum well was used to optimize the
growth parameters. Thick layers of Si-doped InGaAs were then grown and found to
have bulk, low temperature (77 K), electron mobilities up to \mu ~ 3.5 x 10^4
cm2/Vs with an electron concentration of ~1 x 10^16
Transition rates and nuclear structure changes in mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V
Lifetime measurements in the mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V were performed by
means of the Doppler-shift attenuation method using the multidetector array
EUROBALL, in conjunction with the ancillary detectors ISIS and the Neutron
Wall. The determined transition strengths in the yrast cascades are well

The kinetics of surfactant desorption at the airâsolution interface
The kinetics of desorption of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate at the airâsolution interface have been studied using neutron reflectivity (NR). The experimental arrangement incorporates a novel flow cell in which the subphase can be exchanged (diluted) using a laminar flow whilst the surface region remains unaltered. The kinetics of the desorption is relatively slow and occurs over many tens of minutes compared with the dilution timescale of approximately 10â30 minutes. A detailed mathematical model, in which the rate of the desorption is determined by transport through a near-surface diffusion layer into a diluted bulk solution below, is developed and provides a good description of the timedependent adsorption data.\ud

A key parameter of the model is the ratio of the depth of the diffusion layer, Hc , to the depth of the fluid, Hf, and we find that this is related to the reduced PĂ©clet number, Pe*, for the system, via Hc/Hf, = C/Pe* 1/ 2 . Although from a highly idealised experimental arrangement, the results provide an important insight into the ârinse mechanismâ, which is applicable to a wide variety of domestic and industrial circumstances
Dynamics on networks: the role of local dynamics and global networks on the emergence of hypersynchronous neural activity.
Published onlineJournal ArticleResearch Support, Non-U.S. Gov'tGraph theory has evolved into a useful tool for studying complex brain networks inferred from a variety of measures of neural activity, including fMRI, DTI, MEG and EEG. In the study of neurological disorders, recent work has discovered differences in the structure of graphs inferred from patient and control cohorts. However, most of these studies pursue a purely observational approach; identifying correlations between properties of graphs and the cohort which they describe, without consideration of the underlying mechanisms. To move beyond this necessitates the development of computational modeling approaches to appropriately interpret network interactions and the alterations in brain dynamics they permit, which in the field of complexity sciences is known as dynamics on networks. In this study we describe the development and application of this framework using modular networks of Kuramoto oscillators. We use this framework to understand functional networks inferred from resting state EEG recordings of a cohort of 35 adults with heterogeneous idiopathic generalized epilepsies and 40 healthy adult controls. Taking emergent synchrony across the global network as a proxy for seizures, our study finds that the critical strength of coupling required to synchronize the global network is significantly decreased for the epilepsy cohort for functional networks inferred from both theta (3-6 Hz) and low-alpha (6-9 Hz) bands. We further identify left frontal regions as a potential driver of seizure activity within these networks. We also explore the ability of our method to identify individuals with epilepsy, observing up to 80% predictive power through use of receiver operating characteristic analysis. Collectively these findings demonstrate that a computer model based analysis of routine clinical EEG provides significant additional information beyond standard clinical interpretation, which should ultimately enable a more appropriate mechanistic stratification of people with epilepsy leading to improved diagnostics and therapeutics.Funding was from Epilepsy Research UK (http://www.epilepsyresearch.org.uk) via grant number A1007 and the Medical Research Council (http://www.mrc.ac.uk) via grants (MR/K013998/1 and G0701310)
