E-COMMERCE IN SICILY: SICILIAN OIL AND WINE
The expectations about the growth of e-commerce are often discrepant, because it’s not easy to qualify the importance of such a fast developing phenomenon. Beside estimations in which the number of the e- trading sites is constantly growing, we witnessed the failure of many successful companies that were trading by the web (dotcom crash). According to the recent report made by the Tagliacarne Institute about the level of information technologies of Italian small and medium sized enterprises, Sicily is first due to the percentage of companies owning Internet sites and used ecommerce. Our purpose was essentially to 'record' the 'state of e-commerce” concerning some agri-food products in a certain period of time, both between Sicilian enterprises and in a wider context in which Sicilian products can be sold. We operated directly through a simulation on the web, identifying ourselves with a potential user endowed with average capabilities. This study pointed out a cautious and gradual approach by those enterprises operating in the agri-food system respect the new economy.e-commerce, agro-food products, search-engines
A WRITTEN STATEMENT ON THE TERRITORIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM OF LAND USE IN THE NEBRODI PARK: SOME METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Nazionale delle Ricerche, all’Istituto Geografico Militare Italiano e all’Università degli Studi
Nord, Grotta Fumata, Monte Minardo, Monte Etna Sud.
The research that led, in 2006, to the creation of the Land Use Map in the Nebrodi
Park, had a protected area as object of investigation. The choice to investigate the
impact of land use of an area affected by environmental and landscape constraints is
considered both a priority and useful; that usefulness derives from representing the
state of social and economic impacts in areas to which it is recognized a particular
"value", at the same time considering that the "conservation" is not synonymous with
"freezing" of resources, but rather as opportunities and for development. The elaboration
of a land use map has been made possible by the Ministry of University and
Scientific Research, the National Research Council, Italian Military Geographic Institute
and the University of Catania. The study area is returned by 28 maps in a
1:25.000 scale, of which we report a brief list: Santo Stefano di Camastra, Pizzo
Michele, Sant'Agata di Militello, Galati Mamertino, Raccuja, Tusa, Mistretta, Pizzo
Luminaria, Monte Soro, Serra del Re, Floresta, Roccella Valdemone, Castel di Lucio,
Colle del Contrasto, Capizzi, San Teodoro, Cesarò, Randazzo, Malvagna, Sperlinga,
Cerami, Troina, Serra di Vito, Bronte, Monte Etna Nord, Grotta Fumata, Monte Minardo,
Monte Etna Sud.
From 2010 up to date, after the conversion of the original maps to digital mapping and
the updating of the information in the appropriate database, we proceeded to the execution
and completion of the written statement of the geographic information system.
The method adopted is based on building a computerized database consisting in a
collection of basic data for describing the topographical, economic and environmental
components of the concerned territory and in the elaboration of thematic maps that
highlight specific major transformations both on a purely agrarian scale and on a
total land scale, that includes also the possible interrelations with the anthropogenic
and natural environment.
The use of GIS software and the availability of suitable base maps (aerial orthophotos,
Regional Technical Papers, direct field measurements, etc.) allowed to create an homogenous
raster and vector data base on the land cover, the latter made through the
digitization of geographic entities with polygon topology.
Later, we tried to define the necessary and sufficient characters to represent all identified
landscape types: the physical and morphological components, the altitude, the
predominant land cover significantly highlighting the main morphological structures. All these information can be derived from the DEM and the slope functions of 3D
Analiyst reproduced from accurate point (spot elevations) and linear (contour lines)
information, obtained from the Regional Technical Papers 1:10.000 in DWG format
and then processed with interpolation functions, which have led to a dataset in GRID
format which forms the xyz from whom it was possible to obtain all the elevation information
used to create a three-dimensional model of the land
Knowledge and use of ICT in the agro-food field: the point of view of the formative processes.
The development processes concerning the whole of society question our skills at transferring or receiving information, whether we are individual or a large community. Up to this time the formative processes carried out by public and private institutions show evident limits, anachronisms and paradoxes. The inefficacy of some of these formative paths is often due to the lack of the basic knowledge (and of its checking). Communication, along with its “abstraction”, its high “informality” level and its important role in the development processes, help us to revise its value chain. Through our brief investigation, we pointed out some lacks. Firstly, about the approach to internet; then about surfing tools and, at last, about the “use of keywords”. We gather a sample composed of 100 elements, clustered by gender, in the sphere of post-diploma, degree and post-degree courses during the 2002-2003 academic year, in two southern regions of Italy: Calabria and Sicily. The research field is the one of agro-food economics, both for the question topics and for the author’s direct pertinence. The results pointed out, through a descriptive statistic, inaccurate dynamics concerning the information communication technology (ICT); the gathered data showed a little familiarity both with the topics and with the tools.ICT, agro-food, keyword
GEOGRAPHICAL PINPOINTING OF THE ROUTE TO THE MADONNA NERA OF TINDARI: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR DEVELOPMENT
Riva a Tindari.
The Sicilian territory, especially in its inland areas, will probably continue to have
among its special features a mainly agricultural vocation, even in the presence of forms
of integration with other sectors such as tourism. Specifically, we "re-thought" to forms
of local development on the basis of the relationship between place and culture and to
highlight spatial peculiarities in order to produce a touristic improvement that’s not
intrusive to the area and local communities, and bearer of development opportunities.
Attempting a partial emancipation from the traditional increase of agricultural specialities,
our interest is focused on mechanisms of local regeneration through the construction
of events with a strong tourist attractiveness, albeit niche, able to
"communicate" the cultural value of religious events like the pilgrimage to the Madonna
Nera of Tindari. Our research work has seen, in a first phase, the reconstruction of the
pilgrimage of the Madonna Nera of Tindari both from the historical and cultural standpoints.
A second phase has seen, through the appropriate field surveys, the identification
of the route and its transformation into a walking trail, from the Ionian coast to
the Tyrrhenian coast and back, or from Santa Teresa di Riva to Tindari. The route we
pointed out has, by specific field measurements, a length of about 50 km, divided, for
various reasons, in three sections with different characteristics and typologies. The
measurements were made through the appropriate use of GPS surveys, covering the
path several times and at different stages. The field work has allowed not only to locate
the path itself, but also to identify a series of significant items such as, for example,
churches, parking areas, icons, votive shrines, etc.. There were also carried out activities
for further exploration on the most relevant topographic features, altitude, land use,
structures, morphology of the route; this made possible to treat, through the implementation
of specific thematic maps, the main parameters for the construction of a Geographic
Information System to support the study of better use hypothesis
GEOGRAPHICAL SAMPLE SURVEY IN ORDER TO STUDY THE TERRITORIAL CHANGES CAUSED BY THE SPREAD OF CTV IN A SICILIAN CITRUS GROWING AREA THROUGH THE GEO-LOCALIZATION OF FOCUSES OF INFECTION
a diffondersi in tutto l’areale agrumicolo italiano, in particolare in Sicilia e Calabria.
altre aree agricole, bosco, improduttivo, urbanizzato).
The tristeza virus (CTV Citrus Tristeza Virus) has already caused enormous damage
and continues to spread throughout the Italian citrus growing area, especially in Sicily
and Calabria.
To stem this epidemic and limit its consequences is important to have valid survey
instruments, even from the geographical and economic point of view. Among these,
we can include the preparation of sufficiently detailed maps of citrus growing micro
areas, highlighting the abandoned land and those converted with the same or other
crops.
From the geographical point of view, the method to be adopted will be based on building
a computerized database consisting in a collection of basic data for describing the
topographical, economic and environmental components of the concerned territory
and in the elaboration of specific thematic maps highlighting the major changes both
on a purely agrarian scale and on a total land scale, including also the possible interrelations
with the anthropogenic and natural environment.
The use of GIS software and the availability of suitable base maps (map of the regional
land use, aerial orthophotos, Regional Technical Papers, direct field measurements,
etc.) will allow creating a uniform raster and vector data base related to the soil coverage
(classified according to five main categories: citrus growing areas, other agricultural
areas, forest, unproductive, urbanized). The information gathered through
surveys of the Authorities and integrated with direct field surveys will be entered into
a database that will later be combined with base maps for the appropriate thematic
reconstruction issues.
The study and implementation of a geographic information system of citrus growing
areas will be supported by a local knowledge analysis that will examine some structural
aspects of farms affected by structural changes induced by the presence of the
virus, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of changes in progress and
the possible evolution of the citrus growing area. The results of local surveys will be
computerized in order to properly correlate the different agro-environmental typologies.
The GIS, obtained by superposition of the two survey levels in a digital format
compatible with the most representative GIS softwares, will be transferred on data
storage devices to be used by any research facility, capable of any developments and
insights, conscious of the fact that a study of this kind is always evolving
Product attracts, the environment receives. Analysis of the tourist offer of two sicilian PGI production
areas. - The category of protected agro-food products is the result of a unique combination of environmental
and human factors that meet in a given territory with the task of communicating the specifics out of the
place of origin. The present contribution is intended to carry out a comparative analysis between two
Sicilian PGI products, Uva da tavola di Mazzarrone and Uva da tavola di Canicattì, and their territories. A
territorial analysis of tourist offerings is proposed through the methodology of density maps (GIS) and a
reconnaissance of the promotion and communication mechanisms through the new media
Cycling Tourism and Revitalization in the Sicilian Hinterland: A Case Study in the Taormina–Etna District
This study aims to present a strategy for the revitalization of the Sicilian “internal areas”, recognizing a directional tool, together with the integration of self-centered actions of slow tourism. The design was specifically located in the Taormina–Etna tourist district (an area of north-eastern Sicily that includes 60 municipalities) which, in rethinking the post-pandemic restart, aims at the development of a mobile system of cycling tourism able to interconnect cultural peculiarities, environmental characteristics, and landscape values. This paper also examines key features and interpretations, and develops a strategy based on a slow travel framework as an alternative means of achieving success in the Sicilian hinterland. Starting from the current financial and environmental crisis, therefore, the paper finds explanations and solutions, in which we try to conceive of the economy and ecology as systems that not only open to one another, but mutually determine one another in defining new, self-sustaining local development processes. In order to build a competitive alternative to help less favorable regions, it is necessary to move within the scope of investments by a public system capable of planning resilient strategies based on sustainable principles
The ecomuseum: from capital to cultural heritage and the figure of the geo-mediator
The paper aims to explore the concept of ecomuseum as a tool for the transformation of capital into cultural heritage, analysing in this context the key role of the geo-mediator. The main objective of the research is to understand how the ecomuseum can facilitate the conservation, valorisation and transmission of cultural heritage, while promoting the sustainable development of local communities. The methodology is based on a review of the existing literature on the concept of the ecomuseum, its role in the valorisation of cultural heritage and the need for the geo-mediator as a key player. The results of the research indicate that the ecomuseum can act as a catalyst for the transformation of cultural capital into cultural heritage by actively involving local communities in the conservation and enhancement of their territories. The research findings may be useful for scholars, professionals and institutions interested in the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage through the implementation of ecomuseum strategies and the adoption of the figure of the geomediator as a facilitator of performative processes
