Energy Efficiency of VCSELs in the Context of Short-Range Optical Links.
We present results from an investigation of the
energy efficiency of VCSELs under large signal modulation. We show that the most important factor influencing the energy consumption of the VCSELs is the required optical modulation amplitude, which drives other VCSEL design requirements. The required optical modulation amplitude also depends on the optical link design. Through this dependence it is possible to better understand the energy consumption of complete short range optical links
Thrombotic Occlusion of All Left Coronary Branches in a Young Woman with Severe Ulcerative Colitis
Background. The thrombosis risk is increased in active ulcerative colitis. The limited number of reported complications have predominantly been cerebrovascular but other vessel territories may also be affected. Patient. During a severe attack of ulcerative colitis a 37-year-old woman suffered occlusion of all left coronary artery branches. Serial angiographies showed progressive recanalisation of the coronary arteries during anticoagulation, but no atherosclerotic stenosis. The cause of infarction was thus considered to be an extensive coronary thrombosis. However, a large battery of blood tests failed to identify any procoagulant abnormality. Conclusion. Evidence is now accumulating that the increased thrombosis risk also may involve the coronary arteries, even in young patients. To the best of our knowledge this is the third reported case of myocardial infarction despite angiographically normal coronary arteries in a patient with active ulcerative colitis. The extent of affected myocardium was in this case exceptionally large
20 Gbit/s error-free operation of 850 nm oxide-confined VCSELs beyond 1 km of multimode fibre
Error-free transmission over 1.1 km of OM4 multimode fibre is demonstrated at 20 Gbit/s bit rate using a narrow spectral width, high-speed 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser
22 Gb/s error-free data transmission beyond 1 km of multi-mode fiber using 850 nm VCSELs
The first error-free data transmission beyond 1 km of multi-mode fiber at bit-rates exceeding 20 Gb/s is demonstrated using a high modulation bandwidth, quasi-single mode (SMSR similar to 20 dB) 850 nm VCSEL. A VCSEL with small similar to 3 mu m aperture shows quasi-single mode operation with a narrow spectral width. The top mirror reflectivity of the VCSEL is optimized for high speed and high output power by shallow etching. A combination of narrow spectral width and high optical power reduces the effects of fiber dispersion and fiber and connector losses and enables such a long transmission distance at high bit-rates
An RF Carrier Bursting System using Partial Quantization Noise Cancellation
This paper introduces a novel method for bandpass cancellation of the quantization noise occurring in high efficiency, envelope pulsed transmitter architectures - or carrier bursting. An equivalent complex baseband model of the proposed system, including the Sigma Delta-modulator and cancellation signal generation, is developed. Analysis of the baseband model is performed, leading to analytical expressions of the power amplifier drain efficiency, assuming the use of an ideal class B power amplifier. These expressions are further used to study the impact of key system parameters, i.e. the compensation signal variance and clipping probability, on the class~B power amplifier drain efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio.
The paper concludes with simulations followed by practical measurements in order to validate the functionality of the method and to evaluate the performance-trend predictions made by the theoretical framework in terms of efficiency and spectral purity
Decarbonising the iron and steel industries: Production of carbon-negative direct reduced iron by using biosyngas
Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (CCS) in iron and steel production offers significant potential for CO2 emission reduction and may even result in carbon-negative steel. With a strong ambition to reach net-zero emissions, some countries, such as Sweden, have recently proposed measures to incentivise bioenergy with CCS (BECCS), which opens a window of opportunities to enable the production of carbon-negative steel. One of the main potential applications of this route is to decarbonise the iron reduction processes that account for 85 % of the total CO2 emission in the iron and steel plants. In this study, gasification is proposed to convert biomass into biosyngas to reduce iron ore directly. Different cases of integrating the biomass gasifier, Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) shaft furnace, and CCS are evaluated through process simulation work. Based on the result of the work, the proposed biosyngas DRI route has comparable energy demand compared to other DRI routes, such as the well-established coal gasification and natural gas DRI route. The proposed process can also capture 0.65–1.13 t of CO2 per t DRI depending on the integration scenarios, which indicates a promising route to achieving carbon-negative steel production
4-PAM for high-speed short-range optical communications
In this work, we compare 4-pulse amplitude
modulation and on–off keying modulation formats at high
speed for short-range optical communication systems. The
transmission system comprised a directly modulated verticalcavity
surface-emitting laser operating at a wavelength of
850 nm, an OM3Å multimode fiber link, and a photodetector
detecting the intensity at the receiver end. The modulation
formats were compared both at the same bit-rate and at the
same symbol rate. The maximum bit-rate used was 25 Gbps.
Propagation distances up to 600 m were investigated at
12.5 Gbps. All measurements were done in real time and
without any equalization

Pheochromocytomas (PCC) and abdominal paragangliomas (PGL) display a highly diverse genetic background and recent gene expression profiling studies have shown that PCC and PGL (together PPGL) alter either kinase signaling pathways or the pseudo-hypoxia response pathway dependent of the genetic composition. Recurrent mutations in the Harvey rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (HRAS) have recently been verified in sporadic PPGLs. In order to further establish the HRAS mutation frequency and to characterize the associated expression profiles of HRAS mutated tumors, 156 PPGLs for exon 2 and 3 hotspot mutations in the HRAS gene was screened, and compared with microarray-based gene expression profiles for 93 of the cases. The activating HRAS mutations G13R, Q61R, and Q61K were found in 10/142 PCC (7.0%) and a Q61L mutation was revealed in 1/14 PGL (7.1%). All HRAS mutated cases included in the mRNA expression profiling grouped in Cluster 2, and 21 transcripts were identified as altered when comparing the mutated tumors with 91 HRAS wild-type PPGL. Somatic HRAS mutations were not revealed in cases with known PPGL susceptibility gene mutations and all HRAS mutated cases were benign. The HRAS mutation prevalence of all PPGL published up to date is 5.2% (49/950), and 8.8% (48/548) among cases without a known PPGL susceptibility gene mutation. The findings support a role of HRAS mutations as a somatic driver event in benign PPGL without other known susceptibility gene mutations. HRAS mutated PPGL cluster together with NF1- and RET-mutated tumors associated with activation of kinase-signaling pathways.Funding Agencies|Swedish Cancer Foundation; StratCan; Swedish Research Council; Cancer Research Foundations of Radiumhemmet; Karolinska Institutet; Stockholm County Council</p
30 Gbps 4-PAM transmission over 200m of MMF using an 850 nm VCSEL
We present high speed real time, error free 4-PAMtransmission
for short range optical links based on a VCSEL operating at 850 nm, a multimode fibre and a simple intensity detector. Transmission speeds of 25 Gbps and 30 Gbps are demonstrated, and the maximum fibre reaches were 300 m and 200 m, respectively. The 4-PAM is also compared with OOK transmission at 25 Gbps, and we find that at this bit rate 4-PAM increases the error free transmission distance in the multimode fibre by 100 m, compared to OOK
