    Admissible Clustering of Aggregator Components:  A Necessary and Sufficient Stochastic Semi-Nonparametric Test for Weak Separability

The publisher's official version is available electronically from doi:10.1017/S1365100509090300In aggregation theory, the admissibility condition for clustering components to be aggregated is blockwise weak separability, which also is the condition needed to separate out sectors of the economy. Although weak separability is thereby of central importance in aggregation and index number theory and in econometrics, prior attempts to produce statistical tests of weak separability have performed poorly in Monte Carlo studies. This paper introduces a new class of weak separability tests, which is seminonparametric. Such tests are both based on a necessary and sufficient condition and are fully stochastic, allowing to take into account measurement error. Simulations show that the tests perform well, even for large measurement errors

    Intersexual cooperation during male clasping of external female genitalia in the spider Physocyclus dugesi (Araneae, Pholcidae)

    Sexual conflict may influence the shape and evolution of body structures that males use to grasp females during mating. Not only sexual coercion but also intersexual cooperation may be involved during clasping behavior. Among pholcid spiders, secondary sexual modifications of the male chelicerae, such as apophyses with spines or tooth-like processes, function to grasp the female by specific parts of her external genitalia such as grooves or apophyses of the epigynum. We analyzed how the female and the male respond when their structures for clasping are experimentally modified in the pholcid Physocyclus dugesi. We used three treatment groups for virgin females that differed in the manipulation of the epigynum apophyses (uncovered, partially covered, and fully covered by a plaster) and two groups of males (uncovered and fully covered cheliceral apophyses). We found that females are mainly cooperative to courting males not only when the female genital apophyses were experimentally covered but also when the male cheliceral apophyses were covered. The current data also indicate behavioral flexibility in males during courtship, especially when they had difficulty in genital intromission. Our experimental results, together with previous observational studies, support a modulated-cooperative scenario between the sexes for cheliceral clasping and genital intromission in pholcid spiders.Fil: Rodríguez Márquez, Irving A..     unfixed and fixed human chromosomes show different staining patterns after restriction endonuclease digestion

    Restriction endonucleases (REs) have been widely used to produce banding patterns on chromosomes, but it remains uncertain to what extent the patterns are due to the sequence specificity of the enzymes, and to what extent chromatin structure influences the pattern of digestion. To throw light on this question, we have digested with restriction endonucleases unfixed chromosomes prepared in two different ways (isolated, and whole metaphase cells spread with a cytocentrifuge) and compared the results with those obtained on conventionally fixed chromosomes. Unfixed isolated chromosomes are easily destroyed by REs; after fixation with cold methanol, which produced minimal alteration to the chromatin structure, the chromosomes are resistant to the action of REs, and conventional methanol-acetic acid fixation is required to permit the induction of banding patterns by REs. Unfixed cytocentrifuge preparations, in which the chromosomes are still surrounded by cytoplasm, are much more resistant to the action of REs, and again banding patterns were only induced after methanol-acetic acid fixation. We conclude that the action of restriction endonucleases on chromosomes is strongly influenced by chromatin organisation, and that methanol-acetic acid fixation is required to permit the induction of conventional banding patterns on chromosomes

    Nowadays calcium carbonate has a great importance in different industrial fields and currently there is the opportunity of appreciate the potential value of marble waste and convert it into marketable products. Marble slurry samples, collected from different dimension stone treatment plants in Orosei marble district (Sardinia - Italy), were chemically, physically, mineralogically, and morphologically analyzed and the obtained data were evaluated for compatibility with the marketable micronized CaCO3 specifications required by some industrial sectors, estimating the prospects of recovered CaCO3 utilization. Besides the economic benefits, transforming a waste into an important economic resource involves environmental advantages, due to reduced marble waste landfills, and sustainability promotion

    Tribological behaviour of Ti or Ti alloy vs. zirconia in presence of artificial saliva

    Abutment is the transmucosal component in a dental implant system and its eventual appearance has a major impact on aesthetics: use of zirconia abutments can be greatly advantageous in avoiding this problem. Both in the case of one and two-piece zirconia abutments, a critical issue is severe wear between the zirconia and titanium components. High friction at this interface can induce loosening of the abutment connection, production of titanium wear debris, and finally, peri-implant gingivitis, gingival discoloration, or marginal bone adsorption can occur. As in vivo wear measurements are highly complex and time-consuming, wear analysis is usually performed in simulators in the presence of artificial saliva. Different commercial products and recipes for artificial saliva are available and the effects of the different mixtures on the tribological behaviour is not widely explored. The specific purpose of this research was to compare two types of artificial saliva as a lubricant in titanium-zirconia contact by using the ball on disc test as a standard tribological test for materials characterisation. Moreover, a new methodology is suggested by using electrokinetic zeta potential titration and contact angle measurements to investigate the chemical stability at the titanium-lubricant interface. This investigation is of relevance both in the case of using zirconia abutments and artificial saliva against chronic dry mouth. Results suggest that an artificial saliva containing organic corrosion inhibitors is able to be firmly mechanically and chemically adsorb on the surface of the Ti c.p. or Ti6Al4V alloy and form a protective film with high wettability. This type of artificial saliva can significantly reduce the friction coefficient and wear of both the titanium and zirconia surfaces. The use of this type of artificial saliva in standard wear tests has to be carefully considered because the wear resistance of the materials can be overestimated while it can be useful in some specific clinical applications. When saliva is free from organic corrosion inhibitors, wear occurs with a galling mechanism. The occurrence of a super-hydrophilic saliva film that is not firmly adsorbed on the surface is not efficient in order to reduce wear. The results give both suggestions about the experimental conditions for lab testing and in vivo performance of components of dental implants when artificial saliva is used

    Interactions of lipid monolayers with the natural biopolymer hyaluronic acid

    AbstractThe interaction of the natural mucopolysaccharide hyaluronic acid with different lipids, present in the natural membranes, was studied at the lipid/water interface using thermodynamic methods and X-ray diffraction. The results show that this biopolymer modifies the properties and the structure of the lipid monolayer. The two-dimensional crystalline lattice and domain structure of the charged octadecylamine monolayer are strongly disturbed by the hyaluronic acid, the monolayer compressibility increases and the monolayer collapse pressure drops down. In addition, the presence of charged lipid interfaces influences the structural organisation of the hyaluronic acid at the membrane/water interfaces. The impacts of these results on the structural organisation at the membrane interface are discussed

    Side Arm Homicide in the Italian Province of Trieste between 1953 and 2002

    The authors present a complete overview of the phenomenon of side arm homicide, basing the study on the data collected at the Forensic Pathology Unit of the University Of Trieste School Of Medicine. Side arms are the most frequently used homicidal method in the town and province of Trieste in a considered study period of 50 years from 1953 to 2002. The analysis of the collected data shows that the town and province of Trieste are communities still very well disjoined from a reality in which crimes against life are yet very uncommon occurrences. This conclusion is well supported by the fact that it has not been possible to define a category of potential victims, which is on the contrary quite easy among societies where organized crime is consistent and widespread. The popularity of side arm as homicide method in our province supports the hypothesis that these crimes are often not aforethought murders, perpetrated by subjects often afflicted by recorded mental health problems, acting during an insanity raptus. Knives are not only actually the easiest weapons to obtain in a household, but are very easily used as well, even by the subjects not accustomed to handle weapons
