The Evolution of the Government of Canada's Debt Distribution Framework

    Get PDF
This overview includes a brief history highlighting the government's use of the primary and secondary markets to develop a framework for distributing its debt securities to financial market intermediaries and end investors. The framework is also intended to meet the government's debt-strategy objectives of raising stable, low-cost funding and maintaining a well-functioning debt market. Pellerin reviews the government's adoption of a new framework in 1998 as well as the 2005 modifications aimed at attracting continued broad and competitive participation in government auctions.

In this article, we present a problem of investment under uncertainty. When the managers make investment decisions they do not know the market (sales opportunities); however they know the price and the a priori distribution of sales. We compare the behavior of risk averse firms to that of risk neutral firms. One interesting result in that risk neutral firms are not indifferent to the introduction of risk and to the change in risk. We present many extensions of the initial problem. Two of them are the consideration of market studies and the change of the a priori distribution of sales

    Learning Constrained Edit State Machines

International audienceLearning the parameters of the edit distance has been increasingly studied during the past few years to improve the assessment of similarities between structured data, such as strings, trees or graphs. Often based on the optimization of the likelihood of pairs of data, the learned models usually take the form of probabilistic state machines, such as pair-Hidden Markov Models (pair-HMM), stochastic transducers, or probabilistic deterministic automata. Although the use of such models has lead to significant improvements of edit distance-based classification tasks, a new challenge has appeared on the horizon: How integrating background knowledge during the learning process? This is the subject matter of this paper in the case of (input, output) pairs of strings. We present a generalization of the pair-HMM in the form of a constrained state machine, where a transition between two states is driven by constraints fulfilled on the input string. Experimental results are provided on a task in molecular biology, aiming to detect transcription factor binding sites

Resistive-nanoindentation: contact area monitoring by real-time electrical contact resistance measurement

    Get PDF
International audienceIn the past decades, efforts have been made to couple nanoindentation with resistive measurements in order to monitor the real-time contact area, as an alternative to the use of traditional analytical models. In this work, a novel and efficient stand-alone method is proposed to compute contact area using resistive-nanoindentation of noble metals (bulk or thin films). This method relies on three steps: tip shape measurement, setup calibration, application to the sample to be characterized. The procedure is applied to nanoindentation tests on a sample with film-on-elastic-substrate rheology and is successfully validated against experimental measurements of the contact area

Étude de la récidive post-traitement chez des agresseurs sexuels judiciarisés

The aim of the current study was to assess the role of a treatment program (uncompleted; completed ; extended) on the posttreat-ment recidivism of sexual aggressors. Data on five types of recidivism (sexual ; violent ; property offense ; against a person ; total) were gathered for 102 pedophiles and 70 rapists. The recidivism rates for pedophiles who completed the treatment program was lower than for those of the pedophiles who did not complete the treatment. As to the rapists, the recidivism rates were lower for those who underwent an extended treatment program than for the other two groups. These data show that a treatment program reduces the recidivism rate in sexual aggressors. The optimal duration of treatment, however, varies according to the type of offender

A Motivational Perspective on the Personalization of Gamification

    Get PDF
The gamification of information systems has seen success in a variety of contexts. However, research has shown that the degree to which gamification is successful varies between individuals. The current paper evaluates the effectiveness of personalized gamification in a warehouse management context. Additionally, this paper explores why personalized gamification can be more successful than non-personalized gamification. Twenty-six subjects participated in a within-subject laboratory experiment in which goal setting and feedback game elements were integrated into a wearable management information system to examine their effect on user performance in a warehouse picking task. The effectiveness of personalized gamification was evaluated by categorizing participants into user types using the HEXAD model and examining performance across conditions and user types. Results show that user type significantly affects the relationship between game elements and user performance. This paper takes a step forward in exploring the motivational mechanisms that explain the efficacy of personalized gamification

Should Gamification be Personalized? A Self-deterministic Approach

Information system (IS) gamification has been successful in many contexts. Yet, research has shown gamification’s success to vary between individuals. In this paper, we compare personalized versus non-personalized gamification in a warehouse management setting. We devised a 26-participant within-subject experiment in which we programmed goal setting and feedback gamification elements into a wearable warehouse management system to evaluate the effectiveness of personalized gamification in terms of user performance. We examined the extent to which personalized gamification succeeded by categorizing participants into one of six user types through the HEXAD scale and then evaluating their performance time and errors across user types and conditions. We found that personalized gamification is more effective than non-personalized gamification. We present and discuss the motivational mechanisms through which personalized gamification can be more effective
