    Get PDF
Background. Cancer and its treatment enforce changes in patient functioning. The principal objective of each patient is to efficiently cope with the disease, i.e. to completely recover or at least to slow its progression. Under such circumstances, patients and their relatives require various forms of support: emotional, informational and instrumental. Objectives. The aim of the study was to determine the level and sources of support available for cancer patients and their close relatives, who deal with the latter on a daily basis. Material and methods. The cross-sectional self-inventory study, conducted at cancer centers in Krakow and Tarnow, included 193 pairs of cancer patients and their caregivers. The study was based on the Berlin Social Support Scales and a sociodemographic-clinical survey. Results. Cancer patients had more perceived and received social support than their caregivers. Patients identified more sources of available support than their caregivers. When the level of support was stratified according to the caregiver’s relation with the patient, caregivers-partners and caregivers-children presented higher levels of perceived support than caregivers-siblings and caregivers-parents. Caregivers received less support than patients from medical personnel. Conclusions. The discrepancy between the level of social support among patient and their caregivers leads to further research on the patient-caregiver dyad, especially with regard to the consequences for the whole family’s quality of life. In connection with a deficit of support for caregivers from oncologists, GP’s may constitute a valuable source of support, especially emotional and informational

The work of an intensive care nurse involves the direct care of patients with life-threatening conditions. In this situation, the prevention of burdens associated with this work becomes important, but it must be preceded by their diagnosis. This diagnosis is possible using standardized tools for the subjective assessment of a psychological burden and an occupational burnout. Therefore, the aim of our research was to determine whether nurses working in the same specialties in different countries are exposed to the same burdens. The study involved 312 nurses, divided into three groups depending on their country of origin and in which they worked. Two equal groups of nurses each contained 106 people from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, while the third group was comprised of 100 people from Poland. The age of the groups studied, taken together was (M = 35.53 +/- 8.86 min. 22 years max. 60 years). Various results were observed as regards psychological burden and occupational burnout in the groups studied. The strongest differences related to overload, non-specific reaction to stress, feelings of personal achievement and depersonalization, which depended on age and length of service in each workplace. Assessment of the mental load can be used to improve the organization of Nurses' work creating safe working conditions in studied countries, taking into consideration the mobility of the workforce in the European Union.Ministry of Science and Higher Education for Scientific and Development Research [WZiNM/DS/7/2015-KON

Celem badań było poznanie sytuacji zdrowotnej bezdomnych mężczyzn z terenów powiatu tarnowskiego. Grupę badawczą stanowiło 70 mężczyzn przebywających w Domu dla Bezdomnych Mężczyzn w Tarnowie. Do realizacji wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. The aim of this study was to determine the health status of homeless men from Tarnow district. The study included 70 men, residents of the Reception Center for Homeless Men in Tarnów. We conducted a diagnostic survey with originally designed questionnaire. Longer duration of homelessness is refl ected by the enhancement of undesirable attitudes; this leads to changes in life situation, social status, and social position. Our study revealed that homelessness and its consequences have complex and multidirectional character. The most frequent causes of homelessness included alcoholism and divorces (20% each). Nearly one half of the respondents (47%) declared that their health status is neither good nor poor, and 31% of the homeless men characterized their health as poor or very poor. As many as 83% of the respondents believed that homelessness contributed to (partial or complete) deterioration of their health. Arterial hypertension, dermatological conditions, liver cirrhosis, and ophthalmological disorders turned out to be the most prevalent diseases in the study group. As many as 63% of the homeless men did not use any prescription medications systematically, and 37% declared taking them regularly

Background: The main areas of prophylaxis in oncology are the identification and elimination of factors that favor the formation of cancer cells, as well as early diagnosis of already formed lesions. The aim of this paper was to search for variable factors influencing women’s decisions concerning prophylaxis. Methods: The questionnaires used included our own and standardized research. The research group consisted of 100 dyads. Results: All significant predictors were associated primarily with factors located on the female side. The only predictor on the side of men was their knowledge about women’s cancer diseases. The frequency of taking preventive examinations for early diagnosis of cancer increased when the level of anxiety about one’s own health was higher, and when the partner’s support for preventive examinations was higher. Conclusions: The predicting factors identified in our study might be included in the development of cancer prevention action strategies by public health institutions

Background: The objective of this study was to assess psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Meister questionnaire for subjective assessment of work-related mental load among nurses. Material and Methods: A group of 211 nurses (mean age, 43.1±7.26) participated in our study. In the process of adaptation stability (test-retest) reliability and factorial validity were assessed. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used as a tool for assessing construct validity). Results: Factor analysis of the questionnaire confirmed a very good fit between input data and factor model (Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin measure of 0.83). Selected variables, including overload, monotony, and non-specific load, explained 57%, 41%, and 66% of the variance, respectively. The analysis proved high validity of the tool, Cronbach alpha was 0.83 for the total score. The correlation factor for questions and scores in subscales was high. Repeated measurements resulted in similar outcomes, which proved the stability of this measure. The analysis of construct validity showed that overload, monotony, and non-specific load presented positive correlation with emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation. Correlation between variables was moderate (rHO = 0.39–0.58; p < 0.001). The total score indicated the following correlations: strong positive with emotional exhaustion (rHO = 0.6, p < 0.001), negative with personal achievements, and positive and moderate with depersonalisation (rHO = –0.14; p < 0.05, rHO = 0.48; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The Polish version of the Meister questionnaire meets all psychometric criteria and may be used for evaluating mental load among nurses. Med Pr 2013;64(3):349–35
