    Geochemical signature of the Pomarinho enclave swarm (Ossa-Morena Zone, Portugal)

    The enclave swarm of Pomarinho is located in the SW edge of Évora granitoid (Carvalhosa, 1983), in the SW sector of the Ossa-Morena Zone (Iberian Variscides). The Granialpa quarry constitutes a privileged exposure of that swarm and, therefore, it was used to collect samples for AMS, petrographic and geochemical studies. The dominant rock in the quarry is a medium-grained granodiorite, composed of plagioclase, quartz, alkali feldspar and biotite. This granodiorite displays a weak N-S planar anisotropy, de-fined by the arrangement of ferromagnesian minerals (mainly biotite). Dark-colored and fine-grained enclaves, that do not exceed 1% volume of the host rock, can be observed scattered throughout the quarry. However, in the NW part of the quarry, there is a cluster of enclaves which, locally, corre-spond to 40-50% of the volume of the host rock. These enclaves exhibit a significant variability in modal composition and texture; therefore, they constitute a heterogeneous swarm, according to Tobish et al. (1997). The enclaves correspond to tonalites and granodiorites, with either equi-granular or porphyritic textures. Their modal compositions comprise essentially the same minerals found in the host granitoid; the major differences are the higher abundances of biotite and plagioclase and the occurrence of small amounts of hornblende, in the enclaves. AMS measurements on both the enclaves and the host rock are very consistent and show that magnetic lineations (K1) have a N-S trend and a plunge of 36º to the South (Moita et al., 2010). Geochemically, the host granodiorite is very homogeneous considering most of the major elements. It is slightly peraluminous (A/CNK~1.03), corresponding to an I-type granite (White & Chapell, 1977). Regarding trace elements, this granodiorite exhibits negative Nb-Ta anomalies [(Th/Nb)N: 8.59-12.08; (La/Ta)N: 1.73-2.18], slightly LREE-enriched patterns [(La/Lu)N: 12.08-16.43] and negative Eu anomalies (EuN/EuN*: 0.73-0.81). The enclaves may be divided into two groups. The first comprises tonalites with SiO2 from 63% to 65%, MgO from 2.2% to 2.4%, Fe2O3t from 5.1% to 5.8%, CaO from 4.1% to 4.8% and TiO2 from 0.7% to 0.9%. Their A/CNK ratios lie in the range 0.98-1.03 and, therefore, they may be considered metaluminous to weakly peraluminous. The trace element geochemistry, similarly to the host, is characterized by the negative Nb-Ta anomalies [(Th/Nb)N: 4.45-6.86; (La/Ta)N: 2.02-2.65] and the slight enrichment in LREE [(La/Lu)N:9.12-11.38]. The second enclave group, with granodioritic compositions, is always slightly peraluminous (A/CNK ~ 1.05), and has higher SiO2 and lower MgO, Fe2O3, CaO and TiO2 values compared to the tonalitic enclaves. Compared to the host rock, the granodioritic enclaves have higher CaO and Na2O and lower K2O contents. The multi-element patterns of the second enclave group also show negative Nb-Ta anomalies [(Th/Nb)N: 9.55 and 10.88; (La/Ta)N: 1.35 and 1,58] and a small LREE enrichment [(La/Lu)N: 9.48 and 12.86]. This preliminary geochemical information suggests that the enclaves and the host rock are probably derived of co-genetic magmas. In such a picture, the tonalitic enclaves and the host granodiorite should represent different degrees of fractionation from the same parental magmas. The granodioritic enclaves, on the other hand, may represent a strong mechanical interpenetra-tion, but chemically incomplete, of the host granodiorite and the less evolved tonalite. Other da-ta, such as isotope geochemistry (in progress) and AMS information, are expected to bring new light to the discussion on the Pomarinho enclave swarm genesis and evolution

    Secretory breast carcinoma--case report and review of the medical literature.

    Secretory breast carcinoma (SBC) is a rare type of invasive breast cancer. Since little is known about the biology of this rare tumour, it is useful to report every such case, in order to make as much information as possible available in the medical literature. We present the case of an 18-year-old woman with a SBC treated by mastectomy (Madden) and axillary node dissection (stage pT3N1M0) followed by chemotherapy (FEC regimen) and radiotherapy. The patient has meanwhile completed 4 years of follow-up with no evidence of recurrence.     Pomarinho enclave swarm (Évora granitoid): a preliminary study

    No bordo SW do granitóide de Évora (junto a Pomarinho), encontra-se um enxame de encraves ígneos, máficos a intermédios. Dados de ASM, obtidos nos encraves e na rocha hospedeira, revelam uma forte coerência nas lineações magnéticas (K1), com direcção N-S e inclinação de 35º para S. Estes resultados permitem sugerir que a disposição das lineações tivesse sido controlada por factores como: i) reajustamento tectónico nas fases finais da cristalização magmática; ii) forte influência do bordo lateral da intrusão (N-S); iii) fluxo simultâneo dos magmas félsico e máfico próximo do topo da intrusão.A swarm of mafic to intermediate igneous enclaves can be observed in the SW border of the Évora granitoid, near Pomarinho.     Pola Insersi Partenokarpi, Defh9-iaam Pada Galur Tomat Transgenik [Insertion Patern of Partenocarpy, Defh9-iaam on Transgenic Tomato Lines]

    The development of seedless tomato fruits will be more attractive to consumers and industry. Artificial parthenocarpy can be induced through genetic crossing, hormone application or genetic engineering. Development of parthenocarpic tomatos has been done by inserting parthenocarpy gene, DefH9-iaaM into tomato genome via Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Sixty putative transgenic tomato lines were produced, and three events (lines) have been selected as the best event, i.e. OvR1#14-4, OvM2#10-1, OvM2#6-2. These lines contained the DefH9-iaaM based on PCR test. This research aimed was to determine the insertion patern of DefH9-iaaM gene in the progeny of transgenic tomatos lines. Parent variety Oval and line Cl 6046 were used as control plants. Results indicated that tomatos line OvR1#14-4 was still contained the inserted DefH9-iaaM gene and followed the Mendelian pattern (3:1) based on molecular analyses and Chi-square test results, while the others were not identified. Line OvR1#14-4 was required to be further evaluated for phenotypic and genotypic analyses for the expression of their parthenocarpy

    The experiment was conducted at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development, Bogor. The objective was to construct -ai gene on a binary plasmid pCambia 1301. This experiment was carried out using construction method by ligation process between fragments of α-ai gene from pTA3 plasmid and pCambia 1301 on HindIII site. The result of ligant transformation into E. coli DH5α was 182 surviving colonies on YEP medium containing kanamycin. DNA samples were obtained from 60 randomly selected colonies. The restriction pattern was tested by digesting each DNA sample using HindIII showed colonies containing two fragments expected of sizes wich are 11.837 and 4.887 kb. Two colonies are predicted containing of α-ai gene on its the binary plasmid. Advanced tests using restriction enzymes BamHI and XbaI showed two directions (right and left) of α-ai gene. The right direction was shown by pCambia-α-ai1 from colony number 43. This plasmid showed expected fragments of sizes 13.485 and 3.219 kb when digested with BamHI and two fragments of sizes 15.421 and 1.303 kb when digested with XbaI. The left direction was shown pCambia-α-ai2 from colony number 58. This plasmid also demon-strated expected fragments of sizes 15.026 and 1.698 kb when digested with BamHI and two fragments of sizes 13.082 and 3.642 kb when digested with XbaI. Both pCambia-α-ai1 and pCambia-α-ai2 were transformed into A. tumefaciens LBA4404

    Analisis Fenotipik Progeni Tiga Galur Tomat Transgenik Partenokarpi Di Fasilitas Uji Terbatas (Phenotypic Analysis on Progenies of Three Transgenic Parthenocarpy Tomato Lines in Biosafety Containment)

    Kebutuhan masyarakat akan buah tomat konsumsi dan untuk industri cenderung kian meningkat setiap tahunnya, sedangkan produksi tomat masih rendah. Hingga kini, produksi tomat nasional masih sangat rendah,yaitu 992.780 ton sehingga belum mencukupi kebutuhan pasar yang mencapai 1.230.000 ton. Beberapa upaya telah dilakukan pemerintah untuk meningkatkan produksi tomat, tetapi masih menemui beberapa masalah di lapangan. Perakitan varietas unggul tomat produktivitas tinggi dan tanpa biji (seedless) sangatlah diharapkan guna memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat dan industri. Partenokarpi merupakan fenomena terjadinya pembentukan buah tanpa melalui proses penyerbukan dan atau pembuahan. Teknologi partenokarpi dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan produksi tomat melalui peningkatan pembentukan buah (fruits setting) dan buah tanpa biji. Perakitan galur tomat partenokarpi melalui rekayasa genetik telah dilakukan di Balai Besar Penelitian dan Pengembangan Bioteknologi dan Sumber Daya Genetik Pertanian (BB Biogen). Enam puluh galur (event) tomat transgenik T0 yang membawa gen DefH9-iaaM telah dihasilkan dan tiga galur di antaranya, yaitu OvR#14-4, OvM2#10-1, dan OvM2#6-2 telah terpilih sebagai galur terbaik berdasarkan karakter partenokarpinya. Galur tomat transgenik ini selanjutnya dievaluasi lebih lanjut secara molekuler dan fenotipik di rumah kaca dan rumah kasa fasilitas uji terbatas (FUT). Hasil analisis molekuler menunjukkan bahwa semua galur tomat transgenik yang diuji masih membawa gen DefH9-iaaM. Hasil evaluasi awal terhadap tiga galur tomat transgenik secara fenotipik juga menunjukkan sifat partenokarpi, yaitu meningkatnya jumlah buah, berat buah, dan berkurangnya jumlah biji (seedless).     Eficácia e segurança da utilização de suplementos alimentares na melhoria da performance desportiva : revisão de evidência

    Dissertação para obtenção do grau de Mestre no Instituto Universitário Egas MonizA utilização de suplementos alimentares no desporto é uma prática cada vez mais comum em todo o mundo, e que tem vindo a crescer bastante ao longo dos anos. No entanto, a sua eficácia e segurança são muitas vezes questionadas, e a suplementação nem sempre é realizada da forma mais indicada. Esta revisão de evidência tem como objetivo avaliar a eficácia e segurança da utilização de suplementos alimentares na melhoria da performance desportiva. Métodos: Para a realização desta revisão, recorreu-se a 4 bases de dados, onde foram pesquisados estudos relacionados com a suplementação na prática desportiva. Para cada suplemento inserido nesta revisão, foram selecionados vários estudos relevantes sobre o seu impacto no desempenho desportivo dos atletas, e analisados ao pormenor de forma a comprovar a sua eficácia. Resultados: Após a análise dos estudos incluídos, foi possível verificar fortes evidências de uma melhoria do desempenho nos atletas que ingeriram suplementação com cafeína, creatina, -alanina, bicarbonato de sódio e proteína whey. Enquanto isso, a suplementação com nitrato e com citrato de sódio, apenas produziu benefícios para os atletas em determinados estudos, sendo a sua eficácia muito limitada. Relativamente à segurança, todos os suplementos se mostraram seguros dentro das doses recomendadas, apesar de pequenos efeitos adversos que em nada afetaram a performance do atleta. Conclusão: Esta revisão de evidência demonstrou uma melhoria do desempenho desportivo em atletas que ingeriram suplementação, comparativamente ao grupo controlo de cada estudo, e mostrou que os suplementos analisados podem ser seguros dentro das doses recomendadas. No entanto, a suplementação com nitrato e com citrato de sódio, nem sempre mostrou melhorias significativas do desempenho desportivo dos atletas, sendo necessários mais estudos para comprovar a eficácia destes dois suplementos. Desta forma, foi possível avaliar a eficácia e segurança de vários suplementos no desempenho desportivo do atleta, tanto regular como de alta competição, com o objetivo de fornecer mais informação e evidência sobre a utilização dos mesmos.Introduction: The use of dietary supplements in sports is an increasingly common practice worldwide, and it has grown considerably over the years. However, its effectiveness and safety are often questioned, and supplementation is not always performed in the most appropriate way. This evidence review aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of using dietary supplements to improve sports performance. Methods: To carry out this review, 4 databases were used, where studies related to supplementation in sports practice were researched. For each supplement included in this review, several relevant studies were selected on their impact on athlete’s sports performance, and analyzed in detail in order to prove their effectiveness. Results: After analyzing the included studies, it was possible to verify strong evidence of improved performance in athletes who ingested supplementation with caffeine, creatine, -alanine, sodium bicarbonate and whey protein. Meanwhile, supplementation with nitrate and sodium citrate has only produced benefits for athletes in certain studies, and its effectiveness is very limited. Regarding safety, all supplements were shown to be safe within the recommended doses, despite small adverse effects that in no way affected the athlete’s performance. Conclusion: This evidence review demonstrated an improvement in sports performance in athletes who ingested supplementation, compared to the control group of each study, and showed that the analyzed supplements can be safe within the recommended doses. However, supplementation with nitrate and sodium citrate has not always shown significant improvements in athlete’s sports performance, and further studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of these two supplements. In this way, it was possible to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of various supplements in the athlete’s sports performance, both regular and high competition, in order to provide more information and evidence on their use

    Avaliação da Qualidade do Ar Interior em Central de Tratamento Mecânico e Biológico de Resíduos Urbanos

    A Central de Tratamento Mecânico e Biológico (CTMB) de Resíduos Urbanos dos Sistemas Gesamb, Resialentejo e AMCAL em Beja, foi construída em edifício fechado e entrou em funcionamento em 2015 e foi dimensionada para processar 30 000 toneladas de resíduos/ano. Esta é composta por três unidades distintas: prétratamento da linha de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos (RSU); Pré-tratamento da linha de embalagens e tratamento da fração orgânica. O Tratamento Mecânico e Biológico (TMB) visa produzir: I) composto (corretivo de solos); II) combustível derivado de resíduos (CDR) ou combustível sólido recuperado (CSR) em função das respetivas características; III) biogás (quando o tratamento biológico se desenvolve em condições anaeróbias); IV) resíduo bioestabilizado a enviar para aterro ou com potencial utilização comercial, em função das suas características organoléticas. A natureza das operações efetuadas nesta unidade pressupõe a libertação para a atmosfera de compostos que poderão ter um impacto negativo na qualidade do ar ambiente e na saúde dos operadores. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade do ar interior da CTMB durante os meses de novembro e dezembro de 2015. Após os pontos de amostragem definidos (4) os parâmetros analisados foram: temperatura, humidade relativa, matéria particulada (PM10), VOCs, dióxido de carbono e monóxido de carbono. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram valores de matéria particulada (74,9-6782 mg/m3) excessivamente elevados, bem como de COVs (1,3-13,3 mg/m3) e dióxido de carbono.     The development of seedless tomato fruits will be more attractive to both consumers and industries. Seedless tomatoes can beproduced through parthenocarpy technology. Artificial parthenocarpy can be induced by conventional crossing, hormoneapplication, or genetic engineering. The development of parthenocarpic tomatoes through genetic engineering has been carriedout by inserting DefH9-iaaM parthenocarpic geneinto tomato genome via Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transformation.Sixty putative transgenic tomato lines were produced and three events (OvR1#14-4, OvM2#10-1, and OvM2#6-2) were selectedas the best events. The background of the tomato lines was Oval variety, and based on PCR results, the three selected linescontained DefH9-RI-iaaM in their genome. The objective of this research was to determine the integration of DefH9-RI-iaaMgene in the progenies of three transgenic tomatoes lines using PCR technique. The research was conducted in the laboratoryand Biosafety Containment Facility of Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research andDevelopment (ICABIOGRAD). Parental variety, Oval (neither transgenic nor in vitro cultured), and elite line of CL 6046 were usedas control plants.
