    Large-angle scattering of multi-GeV muons on thin Lead targets

    The probability of large-angle scattering for multi-GeV muons in thin (t/X0∼10−1t/X_0 \sim 10^{-1}) lead targets is studied. The new estimates presented here are based both on simulation programs (GEANT4 libraries) and theoretical calculations. In order to validate the results provided by simulation, a comparison is drawn with experimental data from the literature. This study is particularly relevant when applied to muons originating from νμCC\nu_\mu^{CC} interactions of CNGS beam neutrinos. In that circumstance the process under study represents the main background for the νμ→ντ\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau search in the τ→μ\tau \to \mu channel for the OPERA experiment at LNGS. Finally, we also investigate, in the CNGS context, possible contributions from the muon photo-nuclear process which might in principle also produce a large-angle muon scattering signature in the detector

    Photopyroelectric Investigation of the trans–cis Isomerization Effect on the Nematic- Isotropic Phase Transition of a Liquid Crystalline Azobenzene

    Photopyroelectric calorimetry has been applied to the study of the effects of different concentration of photo-induced cis isomeric molecules on the characteristics of the nematic – isotropic phase transition in p,p’-diheptylazobenzene (7AB) samples. The investigations could be carried out by monitoring the behavior of the thermal diffusivity over the phase transition before and during the sample irradiation with UV light of varying intensity. Among other, it is shown that the monitoring of the time dependence of the thermal diffusivity at fixed sample temperature enabled the comparative study of the dynamics of the trans–cis and cis–trans isomeric transitions. It was shown that the increasing cis isomers concentration caused an increase in the fraction of material undergoing the phase transitions and increased the cis–trans conversion rate. Finally, polarization microscopy observations of the sample texture, which could be carried out together with the calorimetric evaluations proved useful for a more comprehensive analysis of the obtained results

    Thermographic and reflectographic imaging investigations on Baroque paintings preserved at the Chigi Palace in Ariccia

    In this work, two different mid-infrared imaging techniques operating in the 3-5 μm spectral range are applied to the study of three paintings on canvas, dating back to the XVII century, preserved at the Chigi Palace in Ariccia (Italy). A combined approach based on the use of pulsed thermography and mid-infrared reflectography is proposed for the analysis of the 'Primavera' by Filippo Lauri and Mario Nuzzi, the 'Ritratto di Mario Nuzzi che dipinge un vaso di fiori' by Giovanni Maria Morandi and Mario Nuzzi and the 'Ebbrezza di Noee' by Andrea Sacchi. The aim is to show how the integrated use of these techniques enables a depth-resolved investigation of the entire layered structure of the paintings, from the surface up to the canvas support. The complementarity of the presented results allows an evaluation of the conservative status of the support and the detection of graphical and pictorial features hidden beneath the surface layer, such as pentimenti, as these features are important for the historical and artistic characterisation of the artefact

    Stability prediction of early orthopedic treatment in Class III malocclusion: morphologic discriminant analysis

    Background To evaluate morphologic differences between class III malocclusion success and failure treatment subjects in order to identify which variables are more predictive for long-term stability in early orthopedic treatment. In this retrospective study, 31 patients were enrolled from the Department of Orthodontics (Rome Tor Vergata). Inclusion criteria were as follows: white ancestry, class III malocclusion, mixed dentition, cervical stage (CS) 1-2, no pseudo-class III. Pre-treatment radiographic and cast records were collected. Each patient underwent rapid maxillary expansion/facial mask/bite block (RME/FM/BB) orthopedic treatment until correction. At T1 (permanent dentition, CS4), records were recollected. According to treatment stability, relapse group (RG, 19) and success group (SG, 12) were identified. Sagittal and vertical cephalometric and digital cast measurements were performed. Student's t tests were used for statistically significant differences inter and intra groups. For discriminant analysis, relapse or success status was added to each patient's T0 data. Results At T0, RG showed larger upper anterior transversal width (p = 0.0266), while at T1 the upper anterior length was shorter than SG (p = 0.0028). Between T1 and T0, both groups showed larger upper anterior and posterior transversal widths. SG had greater upper anterior (p = 0.0066) and posterior (p = 0.449) sagittal length. RG presented larger lower anterior (p = 0.0012) and posterior (p = 0.0002) transversal widths, while there were no differences in SG lower arch. Discriminant analysis provided two predictive variables with an accuracy of 80.6%: upper anterior length and upper posterior length. Conclusion A shorter and wider maxilla could be a predisposing factor for relapse and failure of the early orthopedic treatment of class III malocclusion patients. The absence of mandibular changes could be predictable for treatment success

    The OPERA magnetic spectrometer

    The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment foresees the construction of two magnetized iron spectrometers located after the lead-nuclear emulsion targets. The magnet is made up of two vertical walls of rectangular cross section connected by return yokes. The particle trajectories are measured by high precision drift tubes located before and after the arms of the magnet. Moreover, the magnet steel is instrumented with Resistive Plate Chambers that ease pattern recognition and allow a calorimetric measurement of the hadronic showers. In this paper we review the construction of the spectrometers. In particular, we describe the results obtained from the magnet and RPC prototypes and the installation of the final apparatus at the Gran Sasso laboratories. We discuss the mechanical and magnetic properties of the steel and the techniques employed to calibrate the field in the bulk of the magnet. Moreover, results of the tests and issues concerning the mass production of the Resistive Plate Chambers are reported.     A compact light readout system for longitudinally segmented shashlik calorimeters

    The longitudinal segmentation of shashlik calorimeters is challenged by dead zones and non-uniformities introduced by the light collection and readout system. This limitation can be overcome by direct fiber-photosensor coupling, avoiding routing and bundling of the wavelength shifter fibers and embedding ultra-compact photosensors (SiPMs) in the bulk of the calorimeter. We present the first experimental test of this readout scheme performed at the CERN PS-T9 beamline in 2015 with negative particles in the 1-5~GeV energy range. In this paper, we demonstrate that the scheme does not compromise the energy resolution and linearity compared with standard light collection and readout systems. In addition, we study the performance of the calorimeter for partially contained charged hadrons to assess the e/Ï€e/\pi separation capability and the response of the photosensors to direct ionization.Comment: To appear in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research,
