    A New Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy : RXJ1236.9+2656

    We report identification of a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy RXJ1236.9+2656. X-ray emission from the NLS1 galaxy undergoes long-term variability with 0.1--2.0 keV flux changing by a factor of 2 within about 3 yr. The ROSAT PSPC spectrum of RXJ1236.9+2656 is well represented by a power-law of Gamma = 3.7 absorbed by matter in our own Galaxy (N_H = 1.33X10^20 cm**-2). Intrinsic soft X-ray luminosity of the NLS1 galaxy is estimated to be 1.5X10^43 erg/s in the energy band of 0.1-2.0 keV. The optical spectrum of RXJ1236.9+2656 is typical of NLS1 galaxies and shows narrow Balmer emission lines (1100 km/s < FWHM < 1700 km/s) of Hbeta, Halpha, and forbidden lines of [O III] and [N II]. Fe II multiplets, usually present in optical spectra of NLS1 galaxies, are also detected in RXJ1236.9+2656.Comment: 4 pages, A&A style Latex, To apear in A&A as a research not

    Barro's fertility equations: the robustness of the role of female education and income

    Barro and Lee (1994) and Barro and Sala-i-Martin (1995) find that real per-capita GDP and both male and female education have important effects on fertility in their cross-country empirical studies. In order to assess the robustness of their results, their estimated models are subjected to specification and diagnostic testing, the effects on the model of using the improved Barro and Lee (1996) cross-country data on educational attainment of the population aged 15 and over are examined, and the different specifications used by Barro and Lee and by Barro and Sala-i-Martin compared. The results obtained suggest that their fertility equations do not perform well in terms of diagnostic testing, and are very sensitive to the use of different vintages of the educational attainment proxies and of the Summers-Heston cross-country income data. A robust explanation of fertility, to link with empirical growth equations, has, therefore, not yet been found; further work is required in this area

    Large-scale surface reconstruction energetics of Pt(100) and Au(100) by all-electron DFT

    The low-index surfaces of Au and Pt all tend to reconstruct, a fact that is of key importance in many nanostructure, catalytic, and electrochemical applications. Remarkably, some significant questions regarding their structural energies remain even today, in particular for the large-scale quasihexagonal reconstructed (100) surfaces: Rather dissimilar reconstruction energies for Au and Pt in available experiments, and experiment and theory do not match for Pt. We here show by all-electron density-functional theory that only large enough "(5 x N)" approximant supercells capture the qualitative reconstruction energy trend between Au(100) and Pt(100), in contrast to what is often done in the theoretical literature. Their magnitudes are then in fact similar, and closer to the measured value for Pt(100); our calculations achieve excellent agreement with known geometric characteristics and provide direct evidence for the electronic reconstruction driving force.Comment: updated version - also includes EPAPS information as auxiliary file; related publications can be found at http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/th.htm

    Permitting Jury Discussions During Trial: Impact of the Arizona Reform

    A field experiment tested the effect of an Arizona civil jury reform that allows jurors to discuss evidence among themselves during the trial. Judges, jurors, attorneys, and litigants completed questionnaires in trials randomly assigned to either a Trial Discussions condition, in which jurors were permitted to discuss the evidence during trial, or a No Discussions condition, in which jurors were prohibited from discussing evidence during trial according to traditional admonitions. Judicial agreement with jury verdicts did not differ between conditions. Permitting jurors to discuss the evidence did affect the degree of certainty that jurors reported about their preferences at the start of jury deliberations, the level of conflict on the jury, and the likelihood of reaching unanimity

    The Arizona Jury Reform Permitting Civil Jury Trial Discussions: The View of Trial Participants, Judges, and Jurors

    In 1995, the Arizona Supreme Court reformed the jury trial process by allowing civil jurors to discuss the evidence presented during trial prior to their formal deliberations. This Article examines the theoretical, legal, and policy issues raised by this reform and presents the early results of a field experiment that tested the impact of trial discussions. Jurors, judges, attorneys, and litigants in civil jury trials in Arizona were questioned regarding their observations, experiences, and reactions during trial as well as what they perceived to be the benefits and drawback of juror discussions. The data revealed that the majority of judges and jurors support juror discussions during trial while attorneys and litigants are divided in their views of this reform. The study also revealed that experience with the reform appears to increase support for it. Although the impact of the reform on the jury decision making process remains unclear, these early findings provide some insight into the effects of reforming the juror deliberation process
