Purpose: Asses the investigative tendencies of the UNAM’s community by means of a method to present the critical apparatus of the theses of all the careers and academic levels that are studied in the UNAM. We present a proposal for the construction of a web site for bibliographic references used in the theses of all the degree courses and levels studied in the UNAM. Design / methodology / approach: The study begins by obtaining names to designate the critical apparatus in the bibliography section set as a convention in the four areas of knowledge given at the UNAM, considering the academic levels of PhD’s, master's and bachelor's degree. We provide a list of the arbitrary names given in most sources of information that can be cited in the critical apparatus. In this way, researchers may be able to perform a formal evaluation of various citation styles. A study of the styles used in the theses of the UNAM is made by taking random samples in the areas and levels previously mentioned. Finally, we provide a methodology to present the critical apparatus. Findings: The results show that there is no uniformity in the critical apparatus elaboration for the thesis. A wide variety of formats are used to cite the critical apparatus, including the varieties for the name "Bibliography". Originality / value: Qualitative characteristics are defined to evaluate citation styles. A proposal is presented to define the heading in the list of cited sources of the theses. We propose 3 styles to use in building the critical apparatus according to the ease of their technical management. Finally, the benefits of applying the proposals defined in this paper are mentioned. Keywords / themes: critical apparatus, citation styles, sources of information, databases of bibliographic citations, theses, dissertations. Type of publication: Case stud

English As a result of the Open Access (OA) movement, it is undeniable that all over the world there are many completed and ongoing projects of institutional repositories (IR) as a new alternative for scientific communication. IR facilitate access to research outputs, i.e. articles, books, book chapters, theses and dissertations, among other publications. The creation of IR has been widely promoted in Mexico and Latin America. The Institute of Research on Library Science and Information [Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliotecológicas y de la Información, IIBI], as one of the 59 research institutes of the National Autonomous University of Mexico [Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM] has developed an IR that manages a collection of more than 2000 LIS publications, all of them in OA. A metadata scheme based on Dublin Core has been developed for the registration of the diverse types of academic publications mentioned above. Harmonization with other metadata schemes has been taken care of in order to achieve interoperability with other repositories, such as TESIUNAM administered by the UNAM General Direction for Libraries [Dirección General de Bibliotecas], which includes more than 500,000 records for dissertations and theses submitted at UNAM schools, out of which 300,000 are in OA.IBII also partners with the UNAM Institutional Repository, which aims to achieve the integration, organization, dissemination, and promotion of the contents generated or preserved by UNAM. IBII also cooperates with the National Repository of Mexico, created by the National Council of Science and Technology, which currently aggregates the repositories of 90 universities and academic institutions, including more than 65,000 digital resources. The objective of this paper is to show the main characteristics of the metadata scheme developed by the IIBI for the registration of different types of academic publications, as well as their harmonization and interoperability with the metadata used in the National Repository of Mexico and in the UNAM Institutional Repository.

Purpose: Simplify the installation process for one of the most complete and common free software tools for build and administrate digital repositories for bring disseminate, interchange and preserve information. Design / methodology / approach: This work use metodology described in “Curso DSPACE para Bibliotecólogos” by Gómez Dueñas Laureano Felipe and “DSpace 5.x Documentation”. Findings:: This manual shows metodology for DSpace 5.5 installation for Windows 7. However, this metodology works very well in other Dspace and Windows versions and also Unix. Originality / value: At the moment to write the present work the most recent versión for DSpace is 5.5. However I recommend install version 5.4 in which case metodology is same. The installation process is in Spanish. Present work is an update for that described by Gómez Dueñas Laureano Felipe and has most clarity and detail than described by DSpace documentation

Purpose: Simplify the installation process for one of the most complete and common free software tools for build and administrate digital repositories for bring disseminate, interchange and preserve information. Design / methodology / approach: This work is an adaptation or analogy in Linux CentOS 7 of the methodology described in “Instalación de Dspace 5.5 en Windows 7” and “DSpace 5.x Documentation”. Findings: This manual describes the DSpace 5.4 installation methodology on Linux CentOS 7. However, this methodology has been tested on other Linux distributions like RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu and even Solaris 10. Originality / value: There are many DSpace installation manuals on Linux, however, this manual represents an update. At the time of this writing the latest version of DSpace is 5.5 but version 5.4 is more stable. The methodology it is the same if you want to install version 5.5. The installation process is in Spanish language and show greater clarity and detail as described in the documentation of DSpace
