    Minimum power multicasting with delay bound constraints in Ad Hoc wireless networks

    In this paper, we design a new heuristic for an important extension of the minimum power multicasting problem in ad hoc wireless networks. Assuming that each transmission takes a fixed amount of time, we impose constraints on the number of hops allowed to reach the destination nodes in the multicasting application. This setting would be applicable in time critical or real time applications, and the relative importance of the nodes may be indicated by these delay bounds. We design a filtered beam search procedure for solving this problem. The performance of our algorithm is demonstrated on numerous test cases by benchmarking it against an optimal algorithm in small problem instances, and against a modified version of the well-known Broadcast Incremental Power (BIP) algorithm 20 for relatively large problems

    Analysis of intestinal and nasopharyngeal microbiota of children with meningococcemia in pediatric intensive care unit: INMACS-PICU study

    This article belongs to the Special Issue Pediatric Diagnostic Microbiology.Microbiota composition might play a role in the pathophysiology and course of sepsis, and understanding its dynamics is of clinical interest. Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is an important cause of community-acquired serious infection, and there is no information regarding microbiota composition in children with meningococcemia. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the intestinal and nasopharyngeal microbiota composition of children with IMD.[Materials and Methods]: In this prospective, multi-center study, 10 children with meningococcemia and 10 age-matched healthy controls were included. Nasopharyngeal and fecal samples were obtained at admission to the intensive care unit and on the tenth day of their hospital stay. The V3 and V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were amplified following the 16S Metagenomic Sequencing Library Preparation.[Results]: Regarding the alpha diversity on the day of admission and on the tenth day at the PICU, the Shannon index was significantly lower in the IMD group compared to the control group (p = 0.002 at admission and p = 0.001, on the tenth day of PICU). A statistical difference in the stool samples was found between the IMD group at Day 0 vs. the controls in the results of the Bray–Curtis and Jaccard analyses (p = 0.005 and p = 0.001, respectively). There were differences in the intestinal microbiota composition between the children with IMD at admission and Day 10 and the healthy controls. Regarding the nasopharyngeal microbiota analysis, in the children with IMD at admission, at the genus level, Neisseria was significantly more abundant compared to the healthy children (p < 0.001). In the children with IMD at Day 10, genera Moraxella and Neisseria were decreased compared to the healthy children. In the children with IMD on Day 0, for paired samples, Moraxella, Neisseria, and Haemophilus were significantly more abundant compared to the children with IMD at Day 10. In the children with IMD at Day 10, the Moraxella and Neisseria genera were decreased, and 20 different genera were more abundant compared to Day 0.[Conclusions]: We first found alterations in the intestinal and nasopharyngeal microbiota composition in the children with IMD. The infection itself or the other care interventions also caused changes to the microbiota composition during the follow-up period. Understanding the interaction of microbiota with pathogens, e.g., N. meningitidis, could give us the opportunity to understand the disease’s dynamics.This study was supported by the Eskisehir Osmangazi University Scientific Research Grant (2018/11046).Peer reviewe

    Fingolimod Alters Tissue Distribution and Cytokine Production of Human and Murine Innate Lymphoid Cells

    Sphingosine-1 phosphate receptor 1 (S1PR1) is expressed by lymphocytes and regulates their egress from secondary lymphoid organs. Innate lymphoid cell (ILC) family has been expanded with the discovery of group 1, 2 and 3 ILCs, namely ILC1, ILC2 and ILC3. ILC3 and ILC1 have remarkable similarity to CD4+ helper T cell lineage members Th17 and Th1, respectively, which are important in the pathology of multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether human ILC subsets express S1PR1 or respond to its ligands have not been studied. In this study, we used peripheral blood/cord blood and tonsil lymphocytes as a source of human ILCs. We show that human ILCs express S1PR1 mRNA and protein and migrate toward S1P receptor ligands. Comparison of peripheral blood ILC numbers between fingolimod-receiving and treatment-free MS patients revealed that, in vivo, ILCs respond to fingolimod, an S1PR1 agonist, resulting in ILC-penia in circulation. Similarly, murine ILCs responded to fingolimod by exiting blood and accumulating in the secondary lymph nodes. Importantly, ex vivo exposure of ILC3 and ILC1 to fingolimod or SEW2871, another S1PR1 antagonist, reduced production of ILC3- and ILC1- associated cytokines GM-CSF, IL-22, IL-17, and IFN-γ, respectively. Surprisingly, despite reduced number of lamina propria-resident ILC3s in the long-term fingolimod-treated mice, ILC3-associated IL-22, IL-17A, GM-CSF and antimicrobial peptides were high in the gut compared to controls, suggesting that its long term use may not compromise mucosal barrier function. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the impact of fingolimod on human ILC subsets in vivo and ex vivo, and provides insight into the impact of long term fingolimod use on ILC populations

The ethanol extract of Anthemis kotschyana (EEA) and the water extract of Anthemis kotschyana (WEA) were prepared and used for biochemical analyses. Radical scavenging antioxidant capacities of EEA and WEA were evaluated by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging method. Another goal of the study was to evaluate the phenolic compositions of A. kotschyana by liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Rhamnetin (5.484 +/- 0.020 ppm; mu g/g extract) and quinic acid (2.251 +/- 0.012 ppm; mu g/g extract) were identified as major two compounds in the plant sample. This study will be a scientific base for further studies about A. kotschyana for plant biochemistry and plant-based pharmacological industry

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa, endocarditis, congenital heart defect,Although infective endocarditis caused by Gram-negative microorganisms is rarely seen, it may lead to morbidity and mortality. Infective endocarditis caused by Pseudomonas strains is very rarely observed. A 3-year-old female patient with inlet-type ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis was hospitalized upon a provisional diagnosis of infective endocarditis with findings of fever, tachypnea, tachycardia, and hepatomegaly, which developed 2 days after patch closure of the ventricular septal defect. A surgical operation was scheduled, because the patient manifested heart failure with growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in blood culture, and the infection could not be controlled for more than 3 months despite the appropriate combination of antibiotics. During the operation, the infected ventricular septal defect patch was removed, the tricuspid valve was repaired, and a vegetation was removed from the pulmonary valve. Although right-side cardiac valve-based endocarditis caused by P. aeruginosa can be treated with appropriate antibiotic therapy, early surgical treatment is thought to increase treatment success in patients with persistent bacteremia. cardiac surger

In this case report, we present a 20 year old male patient experiencing spontaneous ejaculations that occur without a prior sexual arousal, and without erection during panic attacks. The ejaculations were not reported to be pleasurable and the content of though included thoughts of guilt due to spontaneous ejaculations. The patient recovered from both panic attacks and spontaneous ejaculation after receiving pharmacological treatment

    Genetic polymorphism of cytochrome P450 2E1 in the Turkish population

    CYP 2E1 is involved in metabolic activation of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines, benzene, urethane and other low molecular weight compounds. CYP2E1 gene is present in the population in various polymorphic forms. We detected the RFLP of the human CYP2E1 gene with the restriction endonuclease PstI, RsaI and DraI in a group of 153 Turkish individuals. According to the results of the PstI/RsaI analysis, 96.07% of the subjects were of the c1/c1 genotype, and 3.93% were of the c1/c2 genotype. In the DraI RFLP analysis, 84.30% DD genotype, 15.03% CD genotype and 0.66% CC genotype were determined mined. The data obtained may be useful in epidemiological studies of the influence of CYP2E1 polymorphism on carcinogenesis. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
