    Designing transformative spaces for sustainability in social-ecological systems

    Transformations toward sustainability have recently gained traction, triggered in part by a growing recognition of the dramatic socio-cultural, political, economic, and technological changes required to move societies toward more desirable futures in the Anthropocene. However, there is a dearth of literature that emphasizes the crucial aspects of sustainability transformations in the diverse contexts of the Global South. Contributors to this Special Feature aim to address this gap by weaving together a series of case studies that together form an important navigational tool on the “how to” as well as the “what” and the “where to” of sustainability transformations across diverse challenges, sectors, and geographies. They propose the term “transformative space” as a “safe-enough” collaborative process whereby actors invested in sustainability transformations can experiment with new mental models, ideas, and practices that can help shift social-ecological systems onto more desirable pathways. The authors also highlight the challenges posed to researchers as they become “transformative space-makers,” navigating the power dynamics inherent in these processes. Because researchers and practitioners alike are challenged to provide answers to complex and often ambiguous or incomplete questions around sustainability, the ideas, reflections and learning gathered in this Special Feature provide some guidance on new ways of engaging with the world

    All-cause mortality following a cancer diagnosis amongst multiple sclerosis patients: A Swedish population-based cohort study

    Background and purpose: A reduced cancer risk amongst patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported. Theoretically, this could represent a genuine reduction in risk or, alternatively, 'diagnostic neglect', where cancer is undiagnosed when symptoms are misattributed to MS. Objective: Assess all-cause mortality risk following a cancer diagnosis in patients with MS compared with a cohort without MS. Patients: A cohort of MS patients (n = 19 364) and a cohort of the general population (n = 192 519) were extracted from national Swedish registers from 1969 to 2005. All-cause mortality after cancer in MS was compared with the general population. Poisson regression analysis was conducted in the MS and non-MS cohorts separately. The models were adjusted for follow-up duration, year at entry, sex, region and socioeconomic index. The two cohorts were combined and differences in mortality risk were assessed using interaction testing. Results: The adjusted relative risk (and 95 confidence interval) for all-cause mortality following a cancer diagnosis in MS patients (compared with MS patients without cancer) is 3.06 (2.86-3.27; n = 1768) and amongst those without MS 5.73 (5.62-5.85; n = 24 965). This lower magnitude mortality risk in the MS patients was confirmed by multiplicative interaction testing (P < 0.001). Conclusions: A consistent pattern of lower magnitude of all-cause mortality risk following cancer in MS patients for a range of organ-specific cancer types was found. It suggests that cancer diagnoses tend not to be delayed in MS and diagnostic neglect is unlikely to account for the reduced cancer risk associated with MS. The lower magnitude cancer risk in MS may be due to disease-associated characteristics or exposures. © 2015 EAN

    Morphological studies of mor of different ages were carried out with the purposes of describing and elucidating biological activity on the basis of morphological properties. and deducing the rate of genesis. The site was characterized by a quartz-rich sand deposit. low ground-water table, poor vegetation and orthic podzol. In the morphological analyses the mor was separated into different horizons. Micromorphological studies showed that fungi were very important in the decomposition process. Soil animals were of less significance. The formation of the fermentation horizon was a fast process. After a period of 20 years a fermentation horizon had developed although it was characterized by a low content of altered organic matter. The formation of a humus substance horizon was a much slower process

    The Pion-Nucleon coupling constant from np charge exchange scattering

    A novel extrapolation method has been used to deduce the charged Pion-Nucleon coupling constant from backward npnp differential scattering cross sections. We applied it to new measurements performed at 162 MeV at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala. In the angular range 150180150^\circ-180^\circ, the carefully normalized data are steeper than those of most previous measurements. The extracted value, gπ±2=14.52±0.26g^2_{\pi^\pm} = 14.52 \pm 0.26, in good agreement with the classical value, is higher than those determined in recent nucleon-nucleon partial-wave analyses.Comment: 6 pages, 3 encapsulated figures, epsfig, menu97.cls (included

    Two phase transitions in the fully frustrated XYXY model

    The fully frustrated XYXY model on a square lattice is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is found at TKT0.446T_{\rm KT} \approx 0.446, followed by an ordinary Ising transition at a slightly higher temperature, Tc0.452T_c \approx 0.452.
