Calibration of the ISEE plasma composition experiment
The Plasma Composition experiment on the ISEE-1 satellite was designed to measure ions from 1 to 16 amu, at energies from near zero to 16 keV. The two nearly identical flight instruments were calibrated by means of preflight laboratory tests and in-flight data comparisons. This document presents most of the details of those efforts, with special emphasis on the low energy (0 to 100 eV) portion of the instrument response. The analysis of the instrument includes a ray-tracing calculation, which follows an ensemble of test particles through the detector
Thermodynamic properties of Pb determined from pressure-dependent critical-field measurements
We have carried out extensive low-temperature (1.5 to 10 K) measurements of
the critical field, , for the element Pb up to a pressure of GPa.
From this data the electronic entropy, specific heat, thermal expansion
coefficient and compressibility is calculated as a function of temperature,
pressure and magnetic field. The zero-field data is consistent with direct
thermodynamic measurements and the -dependence of and specific heat
coefficient, allows the determination of the -dependence of

SIGAME simulations of the [CII], [OI] and [OIII] line emission from star forming galaxies at z ~ 6
Of the almost 40 star forming galaxies at z>~5 (not counting QSOs) observed
in [CII] to date, nearly half are either very faint in [CII], or not detected
at all, and fall well below expectations based on locally derived relations
between star formation rate (SFR) and [CII] luminosity. Combining cosmological
zoom simulations of galaxies with SIGAME (SImulator of GAlaxy
Millimeter/submillimeter Emission) we have modeled the multi-phased
interstellar medium (ISM) and its emission in [CII], [OI] and [OIII], from 30
main sequence galaxies at z~6 with star formation rates ~3-23Msun/yr, stellar
masses ~(0.7-8)x10^9Msun, and metallicities ~(0.1-0.4)xZsun. The simulations
are able to reproduce the aforementioned [CII]-faintness at z>5, match two of
the three existing z>~5 detections of [OIII], and are furthermore roughly
consistent with the [OI] and [OIII] luminosity relations with SFR observed for
local starburst galaxies. We find that the [CII] emission is dominated by the
diffuse ionized gas phase and molecular clouds, which on average contribute
~66% and ~27%, respectively. The molecular gas, which constitutes only ~10% of
the total gas mass is thus a more efficient emitter of [CII] than the ionized
gas making up ~85% of the total gas mass. A principal component analysis shows
that the [CII] luminosity correlates with the star formation activity as well
as average metallicity. The low metallicities of our simulations together with
their low molecular gas mass fractions can account for their [CII]-faintness,
and we suggest these factors may also be responsible for the [CII]-faint normal

VLT and NTT Observations of Two EIS Cluster Candidates. Detection of the Early-Type Galaxies Sequence at z~1
Optical data from the ESO VLT-UT1 Science Verification observations are
combined with near-infrared data from SOFI at the NTT to obtain
optical-infrared color-magnitude diagrams for the objects in the fields of two
EIS cluster candidates. In both cases, evidence is found for a well-defined
sequence of red galaxies that appear to be significantly more clustered than
the background population. These results suggest that the two systems are real
physical associations. The (R-Ks), (I-Ks) and (J-Ks) colors of the red
sequences are used, in conjunction with similar data for spectroscopically
confirmed clusters, to obtain redshift estimates of z ~ 0.9 and z ~ 1.0 for
these two systems. These results make these EIS cluster candidates prime
targets for follow-up spectroscopic observations to confirm their reality and

ESO Imaging Survey VII. Distant Cluster Candidates over 12 square degrees
In this paper the list of candidate clusters identified from the I-band data
of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) is completed using the images obtained over a
total area of about 12 square degrees. Together with the data reported earlier
the total I-band coverage of EIS is 17 square degrees, which has yielded a
sample of 252 cluster candidates in the redshift range 0.2 \lsim z \lsim 1.3.
This is the largest optically-selected sample currently available in the
Southern Hemisphere. It is also well distributed in the sky thus providing

Distances to Populous Clusters in the LMC via the K-Band Luminosity of the Red Clump
We present results from a study of the distances and distribution of a sample
of intermediate-age clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Using deep
near-infrared photometry obtained with ISPI on the CTIO 4m, we have measured
the apparent K-band magnitude of the core helium burning red clump stars in 17
LMC clusters. We combine cluster ages and metallicities with the work of
Grocholski & Sarajedini to predict each cluster's absolute K-band red clump
magnitude, and thereby calculate absolute cluster distances. An analysis of
these data shows that the cluster distribution is in good agreement with the
thick, inclined disk geometry of the LMC, as defined by its field stars. We
also find that the old globular clusters follow the same distribution,
suggesting that the LMC's disk formed at about the same time as the globular
clusters, ~ 13 Gyr ago. Finally, we have used our cluster distances in
conjunction with the disk geometry to calculate the distance to the LMC center,
for which we find (m-M)o = 18.40 +/- 0.04_{ran} +/- 0.08_{sys}, or Do = 47.9
+/- 0.9 +/- 1.8 kpc.Comment: 31 pages including 5 figures and 7 tables. Accepted for publication

Higher-dimensional multifractal value sets for conformal infinite graph directed Markov systems
We give a description of the level sets in the higher dimensional
multifractal formalism for infinite conformal graph directed Markov systems. If
these systems possess a certain degree of regularity this description is
complete in the sense that we identify all values with non-empty level sets and
determine their Hausdorff dimension. This result is also partially new for the

ESO Imaging survey: Optical Deep Public Survey
This paper presents new five passbands (UBVRI) optical wide-field imaging
data accumulated as part of the DEEP Public Survey (DPS) carried out as a
public survey by the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) project. Out of the 3 square
degrees originally proposed, the survey covers 2.75 square degrees, in at least
one band (normally R), and 1.00 square degrees in five passbands. The median
seeing, as measured in the final stacked images, is 0.97", ranging from 0.75"
to 2.0". The median limiting magnitudes (AB system, 2" aperture, 5 sigma
detection limit) are U_(AB)=25.65, B_(AB)=25.54, V_(AB)=25.18, R_(AB) = 24.8
and I_(AB)=24.12 mag, consistent with those proposed in the original survey
design. The paper describes the observations and data reduction using the EIS
Data Reduction System and its associated EIS/MVM library. The quality of the
individual images were inspected, bad images discarded and the remaining used
to produce final image stacks in each passband, from which sources have been
extracted. Finally, the scientific quality of these final images and associated
catalogs was assessed qualitatively by visual inspection and quantitatively by
comparison of statistical measures derived from these data with those of other
authors as well as model predictions, and from direct comparison with the
results obtained from the reduction of the same dataset using an independent
(hands-on) software system. Finally to illustrate one application of this
survey, the results of a preliminary effort to identify sub-mJy radio sources
are reported. To the limiting magnitude reached in the R and I passbands the
success rate ranges from 66 to 81% (depending on the fields). These data are

Confirming EIS Clusters. Optical and Infrared Imaging
Clusters of galaxies are important targets in observationally cosmology, as
they can be used both to study the evolution of the galaxies themselves and to
constrain cosmological parameters. Here we report on the first results of a
major effort to build up a sample of distant galaxy clusters to form the basis
for further studies within those fields. We search for simultaneous
overdensities in color and space to obtain supporting evidence for the reality
of the clusters. We find a confirmation rate for EIS clusters of 66%,
suggesting that a total of about 80 clusters with z>=0.6 are within reach using
