The effect of the aqueous extracts of Catharanthus roseus and chlorpropamide (Diabenese) on the levels of serum cholesterol, total protein, lipid peroxidation, blood glucose and liver enzymes were compared in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Four groups namely A, B, C and D comprising of nine rats each were used. A and B were administered with chlorpropamide and C. roseus extracts respectively, while C and D served as diabetic and non-diabetic controls respectively. The results showed comparatively significant reductions (P0.05) in the levels of glucose, protein, cholesterol, lipid peroxidation and liver enzymes in the groups administered C. roseus extracts and chlorpropamide relative to the controls. The reductions were higher in the groups treated with C. roseus extract than in the groups treated with diabenese

The mode of teaching shifted from the traditional face-to-face to the remote or online mode of teaching in most countries of the world due to the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Thus, the new normal demands the use of information and communication tool for instructional delivery across the levels of education. On this premise, the study sought the efficacy of information and communication tool (flipped classroom) on the children’s achievement in Basic Science. Adopting simple repeated measures design, 31 primary three children participated in the treatment session. Basic Science Achievement Test (BSAT) that was properly validated and trial-tested was used to collect data for the study. The children were exposed to two different pretests prior to the treatment and two posttests after the treatment. A mixed-design repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyse the data. The finding revealed that information and communication technology tool (flipped classroom) significantly (p = 000) improved the achievement of children in Basic Science. This finding implicates evaluation of library and information resources to come up with best practices in online information resources to propere instructional delivery. Based on this finding, the adoption of information and communication technology (flipped classroom) in teaching and learning Basic Science was recommende

Opinion Mining also known as Sentiment Analysis (SA) has recently become the focus of many researchers, because analysis of online text is useful and demanded in many different applications. Analysis of social sentiments is a trending topic in this era because users share their emotions in more suitable format with the help of micro blogging services like twitter. Twitter provides information about individual's real-time feelings through the data resources provided by persons. The essential task is to extract user's tweets and implement an analysis and survey. However, this extracted information can very helpful to make prediction about the user's opinion towards specific policies. The motive of this paper is to perform a survey on sentiment analysis algorithms that shows the utilizing of different ML and Lexicon investigation methodologies and their accuracy. Our paper also focuses on the three kinds of machine learning algorithms for Sentiment Analysis- Supervised, Unsupervised Algorithms

This study recognised the importance of print materials and texts in effective and efficient teaching and learning. Though important, there is a proliferation of these materials in the market that learners, researchers and teachers cannot read all within the limited time available to them. They resort to the art of previewing to select the relevant ones. As previewers, they ought to look into the external and internal skeletons of materials such as textbooks, literature books, journal articles, essays and other continuous writings. The paper described skimming and scanning as important techniques for previewing. Finally, those elements and aspects of the English Language texts to be scanned or skimmed were looked at and the importance of each highlighted

    Get PDF
The success of various discipline practices in controlling children\u27s behavior in the classroom has been a major source of concern among preschool librarians. Despite the relevance of library discipline in managing disruptive conduct in children, there appears to be a knowledge gap regarding the impact of preschool librarians\u27 demographic features on their discipline practices. As a result, this study measured the influence/impact of preschool librarians\u27 demographic factors on their library disciplinary practices using authoritarian behavioural theory. With a sample of 156 preschool librarians in Enugu State\u27s Nsukka Education Zone, the study used an ex-post facto research design. The researchers developed and validated a preschool librarians\u27 discipline practices questionnaire, which was used to collect data. The internal consistency reliability index of the questionnaire items was found to be 0.89 using the Cronbach alpha method. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data collected. The study\u27s findings revealed that the age and marital status of preschool librarians had significant (p = .05) impacts on their library discipline practices. As a result, it was suggested that the Local Government Education Authority prioritize librarians\u27 age and marital status while recruiting preschool librarians

The Black – Scholes (B-S) model is one of the widely used models in the pricing of financial option. The B-S model like most other models hinges on assumptions; one of which is the normality condition. A lot of researches have shown that using the log-return of developed market index that this assumption does not hold. We have shown in this paper using the log return from 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2012 in an emerging (Nigerian Stock Exchange) market All Share Index (ASI) to further support the reports of the non - normality condition of the B-S mode

Background: The maternal mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa is high compared to other regions of the world. Management of critically ill obstetric patients is very challenging. We therefore evaluate the trends, clinical characteristics and outcome of the obstetric patients admitted into the intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital in sub Saharan Africa. Methods: This was a 9- year retrospective study carried out at the multidisciplinary Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a University Teaching Hospital which serves as a referral centre for the south east region of the country. Data were collected from the patients’ record, ICU admission and discharge register. Also collected was data concerning labor ward admission and deliveries. Data was analyzed using SPSS Version 17 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).Results: The total admission into the ICU during the study period was 1243 patients of which 73 (5.87%) were obstetric patients. They were between the ages of 17 and 54 years with mean of 32.05±5.96 years. The total number of deliveries within the period was 11224 (1247 per year). The commonest obstetric cases admitted into the ICU were (pre) eclampsia 28.8% followed by obstetric hemorrhage 24.7%. The overall mortality rate in this study was 39.7%. The commonest intervention carried out in the ICU was mechanical ventilation. Conclusions: The two leading indications for ICU admission and maternal mortality are (pre)eclampsia and obstetric hemorrhage

Studies on the morphometric characteristics of the Simulium vectors of onchocerciasis were carried out in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA), Enugu State, Nigeria, between September 2008 and January 2009, with the objectives of identifying the sibling species present in the area and comparing the result obtained with cytological studies earlier done in the area. It was also meant to relate fly types with the types of onchocerciasis present in the area. The Simulium flies were collected using human baits. Seventy-five (75) flies were subjected to morphometric examinations. The thorax length, antenna length, wing length, wing width and femur length were measured and the data obtained were transformed into ratios. The morphometric studies on the Simulium damnosum populations in Nkpologu showed a higher abundance of savanna flies (54) than forest flies (21) among those sampled. The classification was done using the thorax length/antenna length (TL/AL) ratio. Discriminate function analysis revealed that 96.0% of originally grouped cases were correctly classified. The result agreed with cytotaxonomic studies on Simulium done in the area which showed predominance of savanna flies. The implications of the results are discussed

The progress being made in the mitigation of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria notwithstanding, the country still ranks among the top three countries bearing HIV burden worldwide. Various studies and existing statistics on HIV/AIDS epidemiology have revealed that young people are at the centre of the infection as they do not only account for the highest proportion of people living with the virus but also are at the centre of new infections. Adolescents and young adults in tertiary institutions due to the modalities on which the institutions operate are at higher risk of contracting the deadly virus as well as other sexually transmitted infections. This is not unconnected with the perceived freedom that tertiary institutions confer on adolescents and young adults who might probably be breathing the air of freedom from their parents stiff monitoring for the first time. Condoms, when used consistently and correctly have been proven effective not only in protection against unplanned pregnancy which is a major consequence of premarital sex but also against contracting sexually transmitted infections of which the highly dreaded HIV is a major one. This study investigated predictors of condom use among undergraduates in the University of Ibadan. The descriptive survey research design was used in the study in which a multistage sampling technique was used to select 1077 accommodated undergraduates in the university. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire with reliability of 0.87 on the Cronbach alpha scale while Focus Group Discussion and In-Depth Interview Guides were also used to collect qualitative data to validate the data from the questionnaire. The data were analyzed using t-test and simple regression at 0.05 alpha level. The result revealed that there is significant difference in condom use by gender among the respondents with male respondents reporting higher mean in condom use. Findings also indicated that condom use is predicted by STIs anxiety, pregnancy anxiety, condom availability, nature of sexual relationship and risk perception. Findings also implications for public health expert in their continuous quest to reduce HIV prevalence among young people in designing interventions that will address critical issues pertaining to condom use as revealed by the study. Moreover, the need to make condoms available and accessible to members of the population was also recommended. Keywords: Condom Use, STIs, Pregnancy, Risk Perception, Anxiety, Availabilit
