    Temperature dependent core-level photoemission study of UNiSn

    UNiSn undergoes an anomalous phase transition at T-N = 47 K, at which temperature it transforms from an antiferromagnetic metal to a paramagnetic semiconductor with an energy gap similar or equal to 70 meV. In order to investigate how the electronic structure of UNiSn changes as it crosses the transition temperature, we have used the X ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) technique from 20 to 70 K. According to the XPS studies, the U 4f core levels are almost temperature independent while the Ni 2p core levels and the satellite structure display a weak anomaly at T-N

    Port safety evaluation from a captain's perspective: The Korean experience

    There are many factors affecting navigational safety in ports, including weather, the characteristics of the channels and vessel types, etc. This paper aims to identify the factors influencing navigational safety in ports and to analyze the extent to which such factors affect the safety of ports from the perspective of ship captains through a real case study. A quantitative analysis is carried out using the data collected from 21 captains who have over 10. years experience in operating ships individually. The identified factors indicate risk implications in ports. A fuzzy analytical hierarchy process is used to evaluate the importance of the factors and to rank the safety levels of the targeted ports in Korea from a captain's perspective. Consequently, among Busan, Ulsan, Gwangyang, Incheon, and Mokpo, Busan is evaluated by captains as the safest port, while Mokpo is the most risky. The research also reveals that it is applicable to use domain expert knowledge when historical failure data is unavailable or difficult to access to evaluate port safety. The result shows great research significance in terms of providing relevant stakeholders, such as port authorities and shipping companies, with an insight into port safety performance and thus facilitating the development of the associated risk control measures. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd

The hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTGW) phenotype is a predictor of diabetes and cardiometabolic risk. This study aimed to investigate the association between the HTGW phenotype and asymptomatic hyperuricemia in Korean adults.Patients and Methods: The study included 23,240 adults, aged 20– 80 years who underwent comprehensive health examinations at a general hospital in Gyeonggi Province, Korea, from January 2020 to December 2022. The HTGW phenotype was defined as the simultaneous presence of elevated serum triglyceride (TG) levels and increased waist circumference (WC). The diagnostic capability of the HTGW phenotype for hyperuricemia and its association with the condition were assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression analysis.Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia in the HTGW phenotype was 3.44 times higher than that in the normal TG normal waist (NTNW) phenotype. Compared with those in the NTNW group, the hazard ratios for developing hyperuricemia in the HTGW group were 2.887 (2.566– 3.249, P < 0.001) for men and 7.341 (5.139– 10.487, P < 0.001) for women, and these values remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders. The stratified analysis revealed that the HTGW phenotype, coupled with diabetes, had the highest probability of developing asymptomatic hyperuricemia (2.55 times). ROC curve analysis revealed that the area under the curve values of the WC&ast;TG index for hyperuricemia diagnosis were 0.702, 0.627, and 0.685 for all participants, men, and women, respectively.Conclusion: Among Korean adults, the HTGW phenotype was closely related to hyperuricemia in both men and women and showed a particularly strong association in patients with diabetes. It may be used in combination with an indicator that can complement its accuracy for identifying individuals at high risk of hyperuricemia.Keywords: triglyceride, abdominal obesity, uric acid, metabolic syndrom

    Overexpression of angiotensin II type 1 receptor in breast cancer cells induces epithelial–mesenchymal transition and promotes tumor growth and angiogenesis

    The angiotensin II type I receptor (AGTR1) has been implicated in diverse aspects of human disease, from the regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular homeostasis to cancer progression. We sought to investigate the role of AGTR1 in cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, invasion, angiogenesis and tumor growth in the breast cancer cell line MCF7. Stable overexpression of AGTR1 was associated with accelerated cell proliferation, concomitant with increased expression of survival factors including poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP), as well as extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation. AGTR1-overexpressing MCF7 cells were more aggressive than their parent line, with significantly increased activity in migration and invasion assays. These observations were associated with changes in EMT markers, including reduced E-cadherin expression and increased p-Smad3, Smad4 and Snail levels. Treatment with the AGTR1 antagonist losartan attenuated these effects. AGTR1 overexpression also accelerated tumor growth and increased Ki-67 expression in a xenograft model. This was associated with increased tumor angiogenesis, as evidenced by a significant increase in microvessels in the intratumoral and peritumoral areas, and enhanced tumor invasion, with the latter response associated with increased EMT marker expression and matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) upregulation. In vivo administration of losartan significantly reduced both tumor growth and angiogenesis. Our findings suggest that AGTR1 plays a significant role in tumor aggressiveness, and its inhibition may have therapeutic implications. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.111212Ysciescopu

    Comparison of serological assays in human Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-coronavirus infection

    Plaque reduction neutralisation tests (PRNT), microneutralisation (MN), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-spike pseudoparticle neutralisation (ppNT) and MERS S1-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibody titres were compared using 95 sera from 17 patients with MERS, collected two to 46 days after symptom onset. Neutralisation tests correlated well with each other and moderately well with S1 ELISA. Moreover to compare antigenic similarity of genetically diverse MERS-CoV clades, the response of four sera from two patients sampled at two time periods during the course of illness were tested by 90% PRNT.     Physical and Electrical Performance of Vapor–Solid Grown ZnO Straight Nanowires

    Physical and electrical properties of wurtzitic ZnO straight nanowires grown via a vapor–solid mechanism were investigated. Raman spectrum shows four first-order phonon frequencies and a second-order Raman frequency of the ZnO nanowires. Electrical and photoconductive performance of individual ZnO straight nanowire devices was studied. The results indicate that the nanowires reported here are n-type semi-conductors and UV light sensitive, and a desirable candidate for fabricating UV light nanosensors and other applications

    Surface topography of hydroxyapatite affects ROS17/2.8 cells response

    Hydroxyapatite (HA) has been used in orthopedic, dental, and maxillofacial surgery as a bone substitute. The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of surface topography produced by the presence of microporosity on cell response, evaluating: cell attachment, cell morphology, cell proliferation, total protein content, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. HA discs with different percentages of microporosity (< 5%, 15%, and 30%) were confected by means of the combination of uniaxial powder pressing and different sintering conditions. ROS17/2.8 cells were cultured on HA discs. For the evaluation of attachment, cells were cultured for two hours. Cell morphology was evaluated after seven days. After seven and fourteen days, cell proliferation, total protein content, and ALP activity were measured. Data were compared by means of ANOVA and Duncan’s multiple range test, when appropriate. Cell attachment (p = 0.11) and total protein content (p = 0.31) were not affected by surface topography. Proliferation after 7 and 14 days (p = 0.0007 and p = 0.003, respectively), and ALP activity (p = 0.0007) were both significantly decreased by the most irregular surface (HA30). These results suggest that initial cell events were not affected by surface topography, while surfaces with more regular topography, as those present in HA with 15% or less of microporosity, favored intermediary and final events such as cell proliferation and ALP activity

    Noninvasive imaging of radiolabeled exosome-mimetic nanovesicle using Tc-99m-HMPAO

    Exosomes known as nano-sized extracellular vesicles attracted recent interests due to their potential usefulness in drug delivery. Amid remarkable advances in biomedical applications of exosomes, it is crucial to understand in vivo distribution and behavior of exosomes. Here, we developed a simple method for radiolabeling of macrophage-derived exosome-mimetic nanovesicles (ENVs) with Tc-99m-HMPAO under physiologic conditions and monitored in vivo distribution of Tc-99m-HMPAO-ENVs using SPECT/CT in living mice. ENVs were produced from the mouse RAW264.7 macrophage cell line and labeled with Tc-99m-HMPAO for 1 hr incubation, followed by removal of free Tc-99m-HMPAO. SPECT/CT images were serially acquired after intravenous injection to BALB/c mouse. When ENVs were labeled with Tc-99m-HMPAO, the radiochemical purity of Tc-99m-HMPAO-ENVs was higher than 90% and the expression of exosome specific protein (CD63) did not change in Tc-99m-HMPAO-ENVs. Tc-99m-HMPAOENVs showed high serum stability (90%) which was similar to that in phosphate buffered saline until 5 hr. SPECT/CT images of the mice injected with Tc-99m-HMPAO-ENVs exhibited higher uptake in liver and no uptake in brain, whereas mice injected with Tc-99m-HMPAO showed high brain uptake until 5 hr.     Magnetism of pristine Fe films on GaAs(100)

    We grew Fe films on GaAs(100) at similar to 80 K to suppress interface alloying and As outdiffusion, and obtained kinetically stabilized, pristine Fe films. We studied their magnetic properties using both x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and the magneto-optic Kerr effect. The salient magnetic features are as follows. A 2.1-ML-thick Fe film is already ferromagnetic and exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Moreover, a spin reorientation transition occurs in films with similar to 2.8 monolayer thickness. The PMA is attributable to preservation of the surface magnetic anisotropy by suppressing the As outdiffusion during the low-temperature growth of the Fe film. The PMA is associated with the enhancement of the orbital moment by only similar to 50% in contrast to values reported in some previous studies.open116sciescopu
