    Site-Specific Risk Factors for Ray Blight in Tasmanian Pyrethrum Fields

    Ray blight of pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariifolium), caused by Phoma ligulicola var. inoxydablis, can cause defoliation and reductions of crop growth and pyrethrin yield. Logistic regression was used to model relationships among edaphic factors and interpolated weather variables associated with severe disease outbreaks (i.e., defoliation severity ≥40%). A model for September defoliation severity included a variable for the product of number of days with rain of at least 0.1 mm and a moving average of maximum temperatures in the last 14 days, which correctly classified (accuracy) the disease severity class for 64.8% of data sets. The percentage of data sets where disease severity was correctly classified as at least 40% defoliation severity (sensitivity) or below 40% defoliation severity (specificity) were 55.8 and 71%, respectively. A model for October defoliation severity included the number of days with at least 1 mm of rain in the past 14 days, stem height in September, and the product of the number of days with at least 10 mm of rain in the last 30 days and September defoliation severity. Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 72.6, 73.6, and 71.4%, respectively. Youden\u27s index identified predictive thresholds of 0.25 and 0.57 for the September and October models, respectively. When economic considerations of the costs of false positive and false negative decisions and disease prevalence were integrated into receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the October model, the optimal predictive threshold to minimize average management costs was 0 for values of disease prevalence greater than 0.2 due to the high cost of false negative predictions. ROC curve analysis indicated that management of the disease should be routine when disease prevalence is greater than 0.2. The models developed in this research are the first steps toward identifying and weighting site and weather disease risk variables to develop a decision-support aid for the management of ray blight of pyrethrum

    Pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariifolium (Trevir.) Sch. Bip.) is a perennial plant and member of the Asteraceae that is endemic to the Dalmatian region of the former Yugoslavia (36). Pyrethrum is cultivated commercially solely for the production of six closely related esters called pyrethrins. The plant is tufted, slender, and herbaceous, growing to a height of approximately one meter (18). Leaves are alternate and pinnately lobed/narrowly lanceolate to oblong lanceolate. The daisy-like flowers are produced at the termini of stems and consist of a cluster of 40 to 100 bisexual, yellow disk florets encircled by a ring of 18 to 22 pistillate white ray florets atop a moderately convex to subglobose receptacle (Fig. 1; 100).     This article describes the challenges encountered during a needs assessment of partners of international students as well as how the research team addressed these challenges. The needs assessment was conducted at the request of the university’s international student centre, which recognized that partners of international students would benefit from increased support. The needs assessment was also supported by an existing gap in international student literature, which identifies partners as experiencing significant barriers and lack of support in their transition as a newcomer (e.g., Martens & Grant, 2008 ). Implications for attaining and maintaining connections with this population are discussed. L’article décrit les défis liés à l’évaluation des besoins des conjoints d’étudiants étrangers, de même qu’à la façon dont les chercheurs ont considéré ces défis. L’évaluation des besoins a été effectuée à la demande du centre des étudiants étrangers de l’université, qui reconnaît que les conjoints d’étudiants étrangers pourraient profiter de mesures d’appui supplémentaires.     Changes in Pre-Service Teacher Personal and Professional Attitudes Following a Comprehensive School Health Course

    Comprehensive school health (CSH) is a framework that can support teachers in the delivery of health-related content as well as supporting health promotion within the school community. In this study, 222 Bachelor of Education students completed surveys at the beginning and end of a mandatory six-week course on CSH with a body weight-neutral focus. Following the course, participants had significantly positively increased attitudes toward CSH, self-efficacy to teach using CSH, and weight-related attitudes. These results support CSH as a useful framework for teachers in their future practice to improve the wellness of students, teachers, and the broader school community.L’approche globale de la santé en milieu scolaire (AGSS) est un système développé pour aider les enseignants à fournir des contenus liés à la santé et à soutenir la promotion de la santé au sein de la communauté scolaire. Dans cette étude, 222 étudiants du baccalauréat en Éducation ont répondu à des sondages au début et à la fin d’un cours obligatoire de 6 semaines sur l’AGSS. À la suite du cours, les résultats des participants s’étaient considérablement améliorés dans les catégories suivantes : leurs attitudes envers l’AGSS, l’autoefficacité d’enseigner en utilisant l’AGSS, et leurs attitudes liées au poids. Ces résultats appuient l’AGSS en tant que système utile pour les enseignants dans leur pratique future afin d’améliorer le bien-être des élèves, des enseignants et de la communauté scolaire en général

Previous research investigating the needs of international students’ partners is limited and has suggested that partners may face greater barriers to adjustment than international students. The current study was conducted to better understand the needs of partners as well as potential barriers they face when attempting to access services. Although limited by sample size, the results suggested that partners are interested in increased support in helping their transition to local living and mainstream culture

    Employing Polyethnography to Navigate Researcher Positionality on Weight Bias

    Researchers often focus on the content of their research interests but, depending on the research approach, may pay less attention to the process of locating themselves in relation to the research topic. This paper outlines the dialogue between an interdisciplinary team of researchers who were at the initial stages of forming a research agenda related to weight bias and social justice. Using a polyethnographic approach to guide our discussion, we sought to explore the diverse and common life experiences that influenced our professional interests for pursuing research on weight bias. As a dialogic method, polyethnography is ideally suited for the reflexive work required of researchers seeking to address issues of equity and social justice. Beyond more traditional approaches such as journaling, personal interviews, or researcher notes, the intersubjectivity highlighted by this method affords a richer space for exploration, challenging ideas, taking risks, and collectively interrogating both self and society.     “I Am More than My Country of Origin”: An Arts-Based Engagement Ethnography with Racialized Newcomer Women in Canada

    Many women immigrate with the hope that they will gain new opportunities for themselves and their families, however, they often face significant challenges due to the intersectional stigmas related to their gender, immigration status, and other aspects of their social location. In this study, we sought to understand the holistic experience of racialized newcomer women to better support their integration process. Using Arts-Based Engagement Ethnography (ABEE), we employed the use of cultural probes and qualitative interviews to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience of ten newcomer women. An ethnographic analysis of this data yielded four overarching structures which include (1) identity negotiation experiences, (2) process of integration and struggles with transition, (3) resiliency practices and processes, and (4) making meaning of migration experiences. Each of these structures included several patterns. Our results demonstrate the benefits of using arts-based qualitative methods with diverse communities to collect rich and varied data that highlights the multiple social identities of participants. These results also give an in-depth look at the numerous experiences, both positive and negative, that influence the well-being of newcomer women throughout the process of migration. The implications of this research emphasize the need to continue in our efforts to reduce systemic oppression, to create a more inclusive and equitable community
