    The Loss of a Clan: Abandoning Ethos of the East African Revival by the Contemporary Kenyan Christian

    This study investigated two practises of the East African Revival (EAR) movement; the public testimony of one’s salvation and the public confession of all known sins. The study further sought to know the attitude of the contemporary Christian on the same. The study was qualitative in strategy with a phenomenological design. Criterion based purposive sampling was used to select the participants. The tools for gathering data were In-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and Document Review. Thematic Coding Analysis was used to analyse the data. The EDNA model for practical theology was applied as the theological framework. Findings show that the EAR members held the public testimony and public confession of sin as foundational to their doctrine and practice. The two practices helped them to create a unique identity and cohesiveness, after separating from their familial clans at conversion, hence forming a new spiritual clan of their own. The contemporary Christian on the other hand finds these two tenets of the EAR, intrusive and unacceptable. With no alternative ways of building cohesiveness and a unique identity, the younger believers are left without a clan hence becoming spiritual orphans. Traditional Anglicanism, with its focus on sacraments and liturgy, and African Traditional Religions are among the formations fighting to adopt these spiritual orphans. The study recommends that the church and society revisit these practices and apply them appropriately in the fight against corruption and tribalism, among other ills in Kenyan society

    Empirical Similarity-Based Approach for Selection of Unit Root Test

    The existence of unit roots in time series processes can impair the choice of techniques for analysis and forecasting time series data. It is of much importance in econometric modelling to determine the integration number of analyzed time series based on unit root tests. Though statistical theory provides broad range of unit root tests in standard softwares, the choice of an appropriate test highly depends on subjective assessment of the analyst. This paper considers similarity-based scoring approach for selecting the most appropriate unit root test for specific type of time series observations based on Chi-square statistic and which is able to reduce subjectivity. Six unit root tests are studied. The utility of the proposed method is illustrated in simulation. The most reliable test, which is found is applied to a real time series of some selected macroeconomic variables.     Maths inside (https://mathsinside.com/) is a photo competition open to everyone living in Scotland, hosted by the University of Glasgow. The maths inside project seeks to nourish a love for mathematics by embarking on a journey of discovery through a creative lens. This suite of resources have been created to inspire entrants, and support families, teachers and those out-of-school to make deeper connections with their surroundings. The maths inside is waiting to be discovered! Also contained in the suite is an example to inspire and support you to design your own interdisciplinary learning (IDL) activity matched to Education Scotland experiences and outcomes (Es+Os), to lead pupils towards the creation of their own entry. These resources are not prescriptive, and are designed with a strong creativity ethos for them to be adapted and delivered in a manner that meets the specific needs of those participating. The competition and the activities can be tailored to meet all and each learners' needs. We recommend that those engaging with maths inside for the first time complete their own mapping exercise linking the designed activity to the Es+Os.     Circulating Naturally-Occurring Anticoagulants before Treatment and after Recovery from SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Ghana

    Background: Disturbance in naturally-occurring anticoagulants may contribute to the hypercoagulable state in COVID-19. This study determined the plasma antigen levels of protein C (PC), protein S (PS), antithrombin-III (AT-III), and thrombomodulin (TM) before treatment and after recovery from COVID-19. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted from February to August 2022 at Kumasi South Hospital, recruited sixty-five RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 participants. A venous blood sample was taken for full blood count (FBC) analysis using a 3-part fully automated haematology analyzer, and PC, PS, AT-III, and TM antigen levels measured using ELISA. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Severe COVID-19 participants had relatively lower haemoglobin (p<0.001), RBC (p<0.001), HCT% (p<0.001) and platelets (p<0.001), but higher RDW-CV% (p=0.013), WBC (p<0.001), and absolute lymphocyte counts (p<0.001) compared to those with the non-severe form of the disease. The overall prevalence of anaemia among the participants was 58.5%, and 32 (84.2%) and 6 (15.8%) of the anaemic participants had mild and moderate anaemia respectively. Protein C (p<0.001), PS (p<0.001) and ATIII (p<0.001) levels were lower among the severe COVID-19 participants than in the non-severe group. But severe COVID-19 group had higher TM levels (p<0.001) than the non-severe group. Again, participants had higher haemoglobin (p<0.001), RBC (p<0.001), HCT% (p=0.049), absolute neutrophil count (p<0.001) and platelets (p<0.001) after recovery from COVID-19 than the values on admission. Additionally, after recovery, participants had higher levels of PC (p<0.001), PS (p<0.001), and ATIII (p<0.001), but reduced TM (p<0.001). Conclusion: Severe COVID-19 patients had higher PC, PS, and AT-III, but lower TM levels. The changes in circulating anticoagulants may contribute to the hypercoagulable state of COVID-19. Blood cell indices are negatively affected during COVID-19. Complete recovery from the SARS-CoV-2 infection normalised the haematological indices.     Statistical Distribution of EVM Measurements for Direct-Modulation Radio-Over-Fiber Links Transporting OFDM Signals

    The effect of distortion on the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with different numbers of subcarriers and the connection to the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of such signals is investigated. A low-cost and low-complexity directly modulated radio-over-fiber link is used in experiments as an example of a link limited by distortion. Statistical distributions of the EVM over a large number of transmitted OFDM frames are gained from experimental measurements and analyses of idealized processes. The measurement results show that as the number of subcarriers is reduced, the distribution means are more affected by extreme values. This effect results in mean EVMs for signals with different numbers of subcarriers that are not dependent in the expected way on the statistical PAPR of the transmitted OFDM signals. Instead, it is shown that in regions of moderate distortion, the median of the EVM is more closely related to the statistical PAPR and to the required back-off for signals with different numbers of subcarriers

    Radio-Over-MMF Techniques-Part I: RF to Microwave Frequency Systems

    Recent work on radio-over-multimode-fiber (MMF) transmission, for the support of wireless LANs and current cellular systems, operating at below 6 GHz, has shown that excellent performance (e.g., spur-free dynamic range well in excess of 100 dB.Hz(2/3)) can be achieved. However, it is shown here that for multisystem operation, spurious emissions may be more of a restriction than meeting good signal quality requirements (such as low error vector magnitude). Initial results are reported for error vector magnitude and adjacent channel leakage for UNITS transmission over a radio-over-MMF link with a multisystem remote antenna unit with conformance to standards being demonstrated

    Radio Over Fibre Link Design for Next Generation Wireless Systems

    The performance of radio over fiber (RoF) links using low cost optoelectronic components is assessed for distributed antenna applications in next generation wireless systems. Important design issues are discussed and an example link design is presented for a wireless system requiring the transmission of four radio channels per link direction, each with 100 MHz bandwidth, modulation complexity of 256-QAM and 2048 OFDM subcarriers. We show that the noise introduced by the RoF links does not have a significant impact on wireless range, provided the wireless system has uplink power control. Finally, we compare the cost and performance of RoF links for this application with alternative link types that use digitized radio transmission and show that RoF is the optimum choice from a cost perspective

    Design of Low-Cost Multimode Fiber Fed Indoor Wireless Networks

    A low-cost option for transporting global system for mobile communication, Universal Mobile Telecommunication System and wideband local area network (WLAN) signals using multimode fiber (MMF) with 850-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is investigated through range predictions from a link budget analysis. These predictions are experimentally verified for WLAN signal transmission in an office environment, using a commercial access point and a 300-m (OM1/OM2) MMF link with low-cost 850-nm VCSEL transmitters. The analysis indicates that good performance and signal coverage is possible with optimum design of indoor fiber-fed wireless systems, even when using such inexpensive components
