    Mechanical behavior of irregular fibers part III : the flexural buckling behavior

    Fiber buckling behavior is associated with fabric-evoked prickle, which affects clothing comfort and aesthetics. In this paper, the flexural buckling behavior of irregular or nonuniform fibers is studied using the finite element method (FEM). Fiber dimensional irregularities are simulated with sine waves of different magnitude, frequency, and initial phase. The critical buckling loads of the simulated fibers are then calculated from the FE model. The results indicate that increasing the level of irregularity will decrease the critical buckling load of fibers, but the effect of the frequency and initial phase of irregularity on fiber buckling behavior is complicated and is affected by fiber diameter and effective length

    Derivation of the formyl-group oxygen of chlorophyll b from molecular oxygen in greening leaves of a higher plant (Zea mays)

    Using mass spectroscopy, we demonstrate as much as 93% enrichment of the 7-formyl group oxygen of chlorophyll b when dark-grown, etiolated maize leaves are greened under white light in the presence of 18O2. This suggests that a mono-oxygenase is involved in the oxidation of its methyl group precursor. The concomitant enrichment of about 75% of the 131-oxygen confirms the well-documented finding that this oxo group, in both chlorophyll a and b, also arises from O2. High 18O enrichment into the 7-formyl oxygen relative to the substrate 18O2 was achieved by optimization of the greening conditions in combination with a reductive extraction procedure. It indicates not only a single pathway for Chl b formyl group formation, but also unequivocally demonstrates that molecular oxygen is the sole precursor of the 7-formyl oxygen

    AbstractBackgroundsix hours» monitoring by transcranial Doppler (TCD) has been successful in directing Dextran therapy in patients at high risk of thrombotic stroke after carotid endarterectomy (CEA).Objectivesis 3 h of routine monitoring as effective as 6 h in the prevention of early postoperative thrombotic stroke?Designprospective, consecutive study in all patients with an accessible cranial window.Methodsone hundred and sixty-six patients undergoing CEA underwent 3 h of postoperative monitoring by TCD. Any patient with >25 emboli detected in any 10 min period or those with emboli that distorted the arterial waveform were commenced on an incremental infusion of dextran 40.Resultsthe majority of patients destined to embolise will do so within the first 2 postoperative hours. Dextran therapy was instituted in nine patients (5%) and rapidly controlled this phase of embolisation although the dose had to be increased in three (33%). No patient suffered a postoperative carotid thrombosis but one suffered a minor stroke on day 5 and was found to have profuse embolisation on TCD; high dose dextran therapy was again instituted, the embolus count rate fell rapidly and he made a good recovery thereafter. Overall, the death and disabling stroke rate was 1.2% and the death/any stroke rate was 2.4%.Conclusionthree hours of postoperative TCD monitoring is as effective as 6 h in the prevention of postoperative carotid thrombosis

    A Policy of Quality Control Assessment Helps to Reduce the Risk of Intraoperative Stroke During Carotid Endarterectomy

    AbstractObjectivesa pilot study in our unit suggested that a combination of transcranial Doppler (TCD) plus completion angioscopy reduced incidence of intra-operative stroke (i.e. patients recovering from anaesthesia with a new deficit) during carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The aim of the current study was to see whether routine implementation of this policy was both feasible and associated with a continued reduction in the rate of intraoperative stroke (IOS).Materials and methodsprospective study in 252 consecutive patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy between March 1995 and December 1996.Resultscontinuous TCD monitoring was possible in 229 patients (91%), while 238 patients (94%) underwent angioscopic examination. Overall, angioscopy identified an intimal flap requiring correction in six patients (2.5%), whilst intraluminal thrombus was removed in a further six patients (2.5%). No patient in this series recovered from anaesthesia with an IOS, but the rate of postoperative stroke was 2.8%.Conclusionsour policy of TCD plus angioscopy has continued to contribute towards a sustained reduction in the risk of IOS following CEA, but requires access to reliable equipment and technical support. However, a policy of intra-operative quality control assessment may not necessarily alter the rate of postoperative stroke

    Seizures after carotid endarterectomy: Hyperperfusion, dysautoregulation or hypertensive encephalopathy?

    AbstractObjectives: presentation, management and outcome following seizure after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Materials and Design: prospective audit. Results: Eight patients (0.8%) suffered a seizure (three bilateral) <30 days following 949 CEAs. Seizure was not associated with age, gender or presentation. Seven were treated hypertensives but four had labile BP pre-operatively. Five had severe bilateral carotid disease and four had vertebral/subclavian stenoses. Six had a >50% drop in middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity (MCAV) with clamping. Only three had >100% increase in MCAV with flow restoration. Five required treatment for post-operative hypertension. Two suffered seizures <36 hrs of CEA, the remainder were at 3-8 days. All eight had significantly elevated blood pressure at onset of seizures. Four underwent immediate MCAV monitoring and each was elevated. Emergency CT scanning/autopsy showed normal scans (n = 3), white matter oedema (n = 3), oedema and diffuse haemorrhage (n = 1), intracranial haemorrhage (n = 1). Seven developed a post-ictal neurological deficit (stroke = 5, TIA = 2). Overall, two patients either died or suffered a disabling stroke. Conclusions: post-CEA seizure was associated with adverse outcome. Most were labile hypertensives with severe bilateral carotid/vertebral disease. MCAV changes suggested poor collateral recruitment, but no consistent pattern of early hyperperfusion emerged. It remains uncertain whether high MCAVs and severe hypertension after seizure onset are cause or effect. Clinicians treating these patients in acute medical units were generally unaware of the “post-CEA hyperperfusion syndrome” and tended to treat the hypertension less aggressively.Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg 26, 39-44 (2003

    Middle pleistocene glaciation in Patagonia dated by cosmogenic-nuclide measurements on outwash gravels

    The well-preserved glacial record in Argentine Patagonia offers a ~ 1 Ma archive of terrestrial climate extremes in southern South America. These glacial deposits remain largely undated beyond the range of radiocarbon dating at ca. 40 ka. Dating old glacial deposits (> several 105 a) by cosmogenic surface exposure methods is problematic because of the uncertainty in moraine degradation and boulder erosion rates. Here, we show that cobbles on outwash terraces can reliably date ‘old’ glacial deposits in the Lago Pueyrredón valley, 47.5° S, Argentina. Favorable environmental conditions (e.g., aridity and strong winds) have enabled continuous surface exposure of cobbles and preservation of outwash terraces. The data demonstrate that nuclide inheritance is negligible and we therefore use the oldest surface cobbles to date the deposit. 10Be concentrations in outwash cobbles reveal a major glacial advance at ca. 260 ka, concurrent with Marine Isotope Stage 8 (MIS 8) and dust peaks in Antarctic ice cores. A 10Be concentration depth-profile in the outwash terrace supports the age and suggests a low terrace erosion rate of ca. 0.5 mm ka− 1. We compare these data to exposure ages obtained from associated moraines and find that surface boulders underestimate the age of the glaciation by ~ 100 ka; thus the oldest boulders in this area do not date closely moraine deposition. The 10Be concentration in moraine cobbles help to constrain moraine degradation rates. These data together with constraints from measured 26Al/10Be ratios suggest that all moraine boulders were likely exhumed after original deposition.     Extreme events and predictability of catastrophic failure in composite materials and in the Earth

    Despite all attempts to isolate and predict extreme earthquakes, these nearly always occur without obvious warning in real time: fully deterministic earthquake prediction is very much a ‘black swan’. On the other hand engineering-scale samples of rocks and other composite materials often show clear precursors to dynamic failure under controlled conditions in the laboratory, and successful evacuations have occurred before several volcanic eruptions. This may be because extreme earthquakes are not statistically special, being an emergent property of the process of dynamic rupture. Nevertheless, probabilistic forecasting of event rate above a given size, based on the tendency of earthquakes to cluster in space and time, can have significant skill compared to say random failure, even in real-time mode. We address several questions in this debate, using examples from the Earth (earthquakes, volcanoes) and the laboratory, including the following. How can we identify ‘characteristic’ events, i.e. beyond the power law, in model selection (do dragon-kings exist)? How do we discriminate quantitatively between stationary and non-stationary hazard models (is a dragon likely to come soon)? Does the system size (the size of the dragon’s domain) matter? Are there localising signals of imminent catastrophic failure we may not be able to access (is the dragon effectively invisible on approach)? We focus on the effect of sampling effects and statistical uncertainty in the identification of extreme events and their predictability, and highlight the strong influence of scaling in space and time as an outstanding issue to be addressed by quantitative studies, experimentation and models
