Discovery of a Gravitationally Lensed Quasar from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: SDSS J133222.62+034739.9
We report the discovery of the two-image gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS
J133222.62+034739.9 (SDSS J1332+0347) with an image separation of
Delta_theta=1.14". This system consists of a source quasar at z_s=1.445 and a
lens galaxy at z_l=0.191. The agreement of the luminosity, ellipticity and
position angle of the lens galaxy with those expected from lens model confirms

Spring School on Language, Music, and Cognition: Organizing Events in Time
The interdisciplinary spring school “Language, music, and cognition: Organizing events in time” was held from February 26 to March 2, 2018 at the Institute of Musicology of the University of Cologne. Language, speech, and music as events in time were explored from different perspectives including evolutionary biology, social cognition, developmental psychology, cognitive neuroscience of speech, language, and communication, as well as computational and biological approaches to language and music. There were 10 lectures, 4 workshops, and 1 student poster session.
Overall, the spring school investigated language and music as neurocognitive systems and focused on a mechanistic approach exploring the neural substrates underlying musical, linguistic, social, and emotional processes and behaviors. In particular, researchers approached questions concerning cognitive processes, computational procedures, and neural mechanisms underlying the temporal organization of language and music, mainly from two perspectives: one was concerned with syntax or structural representations of language and music as neurocognitive systems (i.e., an intrapersonal perspective), while the other emphasized social interaction and emotions in their communicative function (i.e., an interpersonal perspective). The spring school not only acted as a platform for knowledge transfer and exchange but also generated a number of important research questions as challenges for future investigations
Subaru FOCAS Spectroscopic Observations of High-Redshift Supernovae
We present spectra of high-redshift supernovae (SNe) that were taken with the
Subaru low resolution optical spectrograph, FOCAS. These SNe were found in SN
surveys with Suprime-Cam on Subaru, the CFH12k camera on the
Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), and the Advanced Camera for Surveys
(ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These SN surveys specifically
targeted z>1 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). From the spectra of 39 candidates, we
obtain redshifts for 32 candidates and spectroscopically identify 7 active
candidates as probable SNe Ia, including one at z=1.35, which is the most
distant SN Ia to be spectroscopically confirmed with a ground-based telescope.
An additional 4 candidates are identified as likely SNe Ia from the
spectrophotometric properties of their host galaxies. Seven candidates are not
SNe Ia, either being SNe of another type or active galactic nuclei. When SNe Ia
are observed within a week of maximum light, we find that we can
spectroscopically identify most of them up to z=1.1. Beyond this redshift, very
few candidates were spectroscopically identified as SNe Ia. The current
generation of super red-sensitive, fringe-free CCDs will push this redshift

Statistical mechanics and stability of a model eco-system
We study a model ecosystem by means of dynamical techniques from disordered
systems theory. The model describes a set of species subject to competitive
interactions through a background of resources, which they feed upon.
Additionally direct competitive or co-operative interaction between species may
occur through a random coupling matrix. We compute the order parameters of the
system in a fixed point regime, and identify the onset of instability and
compute the phase diagram. We focus on the effects of variability of resources,
direct interaction between species, co-operation pressure and dilution on the
stability and the diversity of the ecosystem. It is shown that resources can be
exploited optimally only in absence of co-operation pressure or direct

The Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey: II. The Type Ia Supernova Rate in High-Redshift Galaxy Clusters
We report a measurement of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate in galaxy
clusters at 0.9 < z < 1.45 from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cluster
Supernova Survey. This is the first cluster SN Ia rate measurement with
detected z > 0.9 SNe. Finding 8 +/- 1 cluster SNe Ia, we determine a SN Ia rate
of 0.50 +0.23-0.19 (stat) +0.10-0.09 (sys) SNuB (SNuB = 10^-12 SNe L_{sun,B}^-1
yr^-1). In units of stellar mass, this translates to 0.36 +0.16-0.13 (stat)
+0.07-0.06 (sys) SNuM (SNuM = 10^-12 SNe M_sun^-1 yr^-1). This represents a
factor of approximately 5 +/- 2 increase over measurements of the cluster rate
at z < 0.2. We parameterize the late-time SN Ia delay time distribution with a
power law (proportional to t^s). Under the assumption of a cluster formation
redshift of z_f = 3, our rate measurement in combination with lower-redshift
cluster SN Ia rates constrains s = -1.41 +0.47/-0.40, consistent with
measurements of the delay time distribution in the field. This measurement is
generally consistent with expectations for the "double degenerate" scenario and
inconsistent with some models for the "single degenerate" scenario predicting a
steeper delay time distribution at large delay times. We check for
environmental dependence and the influence of younger stellar populations by
calculating the rate specifically in cluster red-sequence galaxies and in
morphologically early-type galaxies, finding results similar to the full
cluster rate. Finally, the upper limit of one host-less cluster SN Ia detected
in the survey implies that the fraction of stars in the intra-cluster medium is
less than 0.47 (95% confidence), consistent with measurements at lower

The Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey: VI. The Volumetric Type Ia Supernova Rate
We present a measurement of the volumetric Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) rate out
to z ~ 1.6 from the Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey. In
observations spanning 189 orbits with the Advanced Camera for Surveys we
discovered 29 SNe, of which approximately 20 are SNe Ia. Twelve of these SNe Ia
are located in the foregrounds and backgrounds of the clusters targeted in the
survey. Using these new data, we derive the volumetric SN Ia rate in four broad
redshift bins, finding results consistent with previous measurements at z > 1
and strengthening the case for a SN Ia rate that is equal to or greater than
~0.6 x 10^-4/yr/Mpc^3 at z ~ 1 and flattening out at higher redshift. We
provide SN candidates and efficiency calculations in a form that makes it easy
to rebin and combine these results with other measurements for increased
statistics. Finally, we compare the assumptions about host-galaxy dust
extinction used in different high-redshift rate measurements, finding that
different assumptions may induce significant systematic differences between

Workaholism, work engagement and child well-being: A test of the spillover-crossover model
This study examines how working parents’ work attitudes (i.e., workaholism and work engagement) are associated with their child’s psychological well-being. Based on the Spillover-Crossover model (SCM), we hypothesize that (a) work-to-family spillover (i.e., work-to-family conflict and facilitation) and (b) employee happiness will sequentially mediate the relationship between parents’ work attitudes and their child’s emotional and behavioral problems. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among Japanese dual-earner couples with pre-school child(ren). On the basis of valid data from 208 families, the hypothesized model was tested using structural equation modeling. For both fathers and mothers simultaneously, workaholism was positively related to work-to-family conflict, which, in turn, was negatively related to happiness. In contrast, work engagement was positively related to work-to-family facilitation, which, in turn, was positively related to happiness. Fathers’ and mothers’ happiness, in turn, were negatively related to their child’s emotional and behavioral problems. Results suggest that parents’ workaholism and work engagement are related to their child’s emotional and behavioral problems in opposite ways, whereby parents’ spillover and happiness mediate this relationship. Non-isothermal model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A liquid crystalline transition
An extension to a high-order model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A liquid
crystalline phase transition was derived to take into account thermal effects
including anisotropic thermal diffusion and latent heat of phase-ordering.
Multi-scale multi-transport simulations of the non-isothermal model were
compared to isothermal simulation, showing that the presented model extension
corrects the standard Landau-de Gennes prediction from constant growth to
diffusion-limited growth, under shallow quench/undercooling conditions.
Non-isothermal simulations, where meta-stable nematic pre-ordering precedes
smectic-A growth, were also conducted and novel non-monotonic

Rank abundance relations in evolutionary dynamics of random replicators
We present a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics description of rank
abundance relations (RAR) in random community models of ecology. Specifically,
we study a multi-species replicator system with quenched random interaction
matrices. We here consider symmetric interactions as well as asymmetric and
anti-symmetric cases. RARs are obtained analytically via a generating
functional analysis, describing fixed-point states of the system in terms of a
small set of order parameters, and in dependence on the symmetry or otherwise
of interactions and on the productivity of the community. Our work is an
extension of Tokita [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93} 178102 (2004)], where the case
of symmetric interactions was considered within an equilibrium setup. The
species abundance distribution in our model come out as truncated normal
distributions or transformations thereof and, in some case, are similar to
left-skewed distributions observed in ecology. We also discuss the interaction
structure of the resulting food-web of stable species at stationarity, cases of
heterogeneous co-operation pressures as well as effects of finite system size
