Visibility and aerosol measurement by diode-laser random-modulation CW lidar
Examples of diode laser (DL) random-modulation continuous wave (RM-CW) lidar measurements are reported. The ability of the measurement of the visibility, vertical aerosol profile, and the cloud ceiling height is demonstrated. Although the data shown here were all measured at night time, the daytime measurement is, of course, possible. For that purpose, accurate control of the laser frequency to the center frequency of a narrow band filter is required. Now a new system with a frequency control is under construction
New special curves and developable surfaces
We define new special curves in Euclidean 3-space which we call slant helices and conical geodesic curves. Those notions are generalizations of the notion of cylindrical helices. One of the results in this paper gives a classification of special developable surfaces under the condition of the existence of such a special curve as a geodesic. As a result, we consider geometric invariants of space curves. By using these invariants, we can estimate the order of contact with those special curves for general space curves. All arguments in this paper are elementary and classical. However, there have been no papers which have investigated slant helices and conical geodesic curves so far as we know
Singularities of ruled surfaces in R3
We study singularities of ruled surfaces in JR3. The main result asserts that only crosscaps appear as singularities for generic ruled surfaces
Leptonic CP Violation Search and the Ambiguity of dm^2_31
We consider a search for the CP-violating angle deltaCP in long baseline
neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that the subleading deltaCP-dependent
terms in the nu_mu -> nu_e oscillation probability can be easily obscured by
the ambiguity of the leading term which depends on |dm^2_31|. It is thus
necessary to determine the value of dm^2_31 with a sufficient accuracy. The
nu_mu survival events, which can be accumulated simultaneously with the nu_e
appearance events, can serve for this purpose owing to its large statistics.
Therefore, the combined analysis of nu_e appearance and nu_mu survival events
is crucial to provide a restrictive constraint on deltaCP. Taking a test
experimental setup, we demonstrate in the deltaCP-dm^2_31 plane that the
analysis of nu_e appearance events leads to less restrictive constraints on the
value of deltaCP due to the ambiguity of dm^2_31 and that the combined analysis
efficiently improves the constraints.Comment: ReVTeX file, 9 pages, 7 figures. Discussions added in Sections 1, 2,

Effects of Instanton Induced Interaction on the Pentaquarks
Roles of instanton induced interactions (III) in the masses of pentaquark
baryons, Theta^+ (J=1/2 and 3/2) and Xi^{--}, and a dibaryon, H, are discussed
using the MIT bag model in the negative parity case. It is shown that the
two-body terms in III give a strong attraction mainly due to the increase of
the number of pairs in multi-quark systems. In contrast, the three-body u-d-s
interaction is repulsive. It is found that III lowers the mass of Theta^+ as
much as 100 MeV from the mass predicted by the bag model without III.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
X-Ray Fluctuations from Locally Unstable Advection-Dominated Disks
The response of advection-dominated accretion disks to local disturbances is
examined by one-dimensional numerical simulations. It is generally believed
that advection-dominated disks are thermally stable. We, however, find that any
disurbance added onto accretion flow at large radii does not decay so rapidly
that it can move inward with roughly the free-fall velocity. Although
disturbances continue to be present, the global disk structure will not be
modified largely. This can account for persistent hard X-ray emission with
substantial variations observed in active galactic nuclei and stellar black
hole candidates during the hard state. Moreover, when the disturbance reaches
the innermost parts, an acoustic wave emerges, propagating outward as a shock
wave. The resultant light variation is roughly (time) symmetric and is quite
reminiscent of the observed X-ray shots of Cygnus X-1.Comment: plain TeX, 11 pages, without figures; to be published in ApJ Lette
Structure of air shower disc near the core
The longitudinal structure of the air shower disk is studied by measuring the arrival time distributions of air shower particles for showers with electron size in the range 3.2 x 10 to the 5.5. power to 3.2 x 10 to the 7.5 power in the Akeno air-shower array (930 gcm squared atmospheric depth). The average FWHM as a parameter of thickness of air shower disk increases with core distances at less than 50m. AT the present stage, dependence on electron size, zenith angle and air shower age is not apparent. The average thickness of the air shower disk within a core distance of 50m could be determined by an electromagnetic cascade starting from the lower altitude
Search for long-lived massive particles in extensive air showers
Air showers containing delayed sub-showers which may be produced by a long-lived massive particle have been investigated by using twelve detectors. Ten events have been selected out as the candidates. However, a definite conclusion cannot be reached at the present time
Lambda(1405) as a Resonance in the Baryon-Meson Scattering Coupled to the q^3 State in a Quark Model
In order to describe Lambda(1405) as a resonance in the baryon-meson
scattering, we have investigated q^3-q qbar scattering system with the
flavor-singlet q^3 (0s)^2(0p) state (the Lambda^1 pole). The scattering is
treated by the quark cluster model (QCM). The Lambda^1 pole is treated as a
bound state embedded in the continuum. We found that the peak appears below the
N Kbar threshold in the spin one half, isospin 0 channel even if the mass of
the Lambda^1 pole is above the threshold. This peak disappears when the
coupling to the Lambda^1 pole is switched off. To use the observed hadron mass
in the kinetic part of QCM is also found to be important to reproduce a peak
just below the N Kbar threshold.Comment: 16 pages and 7 figure
