Contrasting Linguistic Patterns in Human and LLM-Generated Text

We conduct a quantitative analysis contrasting human-written English news text with comparable large language model (LLM) output from 4 LLMs from the LLaMa family. Our analysis spans several measurable linguistic dimensions, including morphological, syntactic, psychometric and sociolinguistic aspects. The results reveal various measurable differences between human and AI-generated texts. Among others, human texts exhibit more scattered sentence length distributions, a distinct use of dependency and constituent types, shorter constituents, and more aggressive emotions (fear, disgust) than LLM-generated texts. LLM outputs use more numbers, symbols and auxiliaries (suggesting objective language) than human texts, as well as more pronouns. The sexist bias prevalent in human text is also expressed by LLMs

Assessment of Pre-Trained Models Across Languages and Grammars

We present an approach for assessing how multilingual large language models (LLMs) learn syntax in terms of multi-formalism syntactic structures. We aim to recover constituent and dependency structures by casting parsing as sequence labeling. To do so, we select a few LLMs and study them on 13 diverse UD treebanks for dependency parsing and 10 treebanks for constituent parsing. Our results show that: (i) the framework is consistent across encodings, (ii) pre-trained word vectors do not favor constituency representations of syntax over dependencies, (iii) sub-word tokenization is needed to represent syntax, in contrast to character-based models, and (iv) occurrence of a language in the pretraining data is more important than the amount of task data when recovering syntax from the word vectors.Comment: Accepted at IJCNLP-AACL 202

Concentrating solar power technologies. The DESERTEC megaproject

    Get PDF
The European strategies on energy have been searching for years to reduce the dependency of Europe from fossil fuels. Underlying this effort, there exist geopolitical, economic, environmental reasons and the reality that oil reservoirs will dry out some day. Renewable energies have become a milestone of this strategy because their huge potential has emerged after years of uncertainty. One of the better developed renewable sources, which is nearer to commercial maturity is solar-thermal energy. In this paper, the current state of this technology will be described as well as the developments that may be expected in the short and mid terms, including the thermoelectric solar megaproject DESERTEC, a German proposal to ensure energy resources to the mayor areas of the EU-MENA countries. The reader will acquire a picture of the current state of the market, of the technical challenges already achieved and of the remaining ones

Production of (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid from methane by in vivo depolymerization of polyhydroxybutyrate in Methylocystis parvus OBBP

Producción CientíficaMethylocystis parvus OBBP accumulates polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) using methane as the sole carbon and energy source. In this work, the feasibility of producing (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid (R3HBA) via intracellularly accumulated PHB through depolymerization (in-vivo) was investigated. Results showed that a PHB to R3HBA conversion of 77.2 ± 0.9% (R3HBA titer of 0.153 ± 0.002 g L-1) can be attained in a mineral medium containing 1 g L-1 KNO3 at 30 °C with shaking at 200 rpm and a constant pH of 11 for 72 h. Nitrogen deprivation and neutral or acidic pHs strongly reduced the excreted R3HBA concentration. Reduced oxygen availability negatively affected the R3HBA yield, which decreased to 73.6 ± 4.9% (titer of 0.139 ± 0.01 g L-1) under microaerobic conditions. Likewise, the presence of increasing concentrations of R3HBA in the medium before the onset of PHB depolymerization reduced the initial R3HBA release rate and R3HBA yield.Junta de Castilla y León - Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (projects CLU 2017-09 and UIC 315)Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo de Chile (projects ANID/CONICYT Fondecyt Regular 1211434 and ANID/CONICYT Fondecyt Regular 1190521)Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica - PCI (grant REDES190137

Parsing linearizations appreciate PoS tags - but some are fussy about errors

PoS tags, once taken for granted as a useful resource for syntactic parsing, have become more situational with the popularization of deep learning. Recent work on the impact of PoS tags on graph- and transition-based parsers suggests that they are only useful when tagging accuracy is prohibitively high, or in low-resource scenarios. However, such an analysis is lacking for the emerging sequence labeling parsing paradigm, where it is especially relevant as some models explicitly use PoS tags for encoding and decoding. We undertake a study and uncover some trends. Among them, PoS tags are generally more useful for sequence labeling parsers than for other paradigms, but the impact of their accuracy is highly encoding-dependent, with the PoS-based head-selection encoding being best only when both tagging accuracy and resource availability are high.Comment: Accepted at AACL 202

Methodology applied to the evaluation of natural ventilation in residential building retrofits: A case study

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe primary objective of this paper is to present the use of a steady model that is able to qualify and quantify available natural ventilation flows applied to the energy retrofitting of urban residential districts. In terms of air quality, natural ventilation presents more efficient solutions compared to active systems. This method combines numeric simulations, through the utilization of Ansys Fluent R15.0® and Engineering Equation Solver EES®, with on-site pressurization tests. Testing consists of the application of the seasonal pressure gradient on the building’s envelope and the calculation of the ventilation flows in three climatic representative conditions (summer, winter, and annual average). Through the implementation of this methodology to existing buildings it is possible to evaluate the influence of the built environment, as well as key parameters (relative height of the dwelling, number of vertical ventilation ducts, and airtightness of windows) of available natural ventilation.CITyFiED project, which has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration activities under the Grant Agreement number 60912
