Multidimensional forced-choice questionnaires are widely regarded in the personnel selection literature for their ability to control response biases. Recently developed IRT models usually rely on the assumption that item parameters remain invariant when they are paired in forced-choice blocks, without giving it much consideration. This study aims to test this assumption empirically on the MUPP-2PL model, comparing the parameter estimates of the forced-choice format to their graded-scale equivalent on a Big Five personality instrument. The assumption was found to hold reasonably well, especially for the discrimination parameters. In the cases in which it was violated, we briefly discuss the likely factors that may lead to non-invariance. We conclude discussing the practical implications of the results and providing a few guidelines for the design of forced-choice questionnaires based on the invariance assumptionLos cuestionarios de elección forzosa multidimensionales son bastante apreciados en la literatura de selección de personal por su capacidad para controlar los sesgos de respuesta.

The article deals with the importance of the right to information for participation in democracy, a right exercised mainly through mass communications media but in which libraries and archives are also concerned. The consideration of information as a commodity and the treatment of public services as such constitute a threat to the citizen’s information rights and, consequently, to deterioration in the quality of the democracy

Mitochondrial dysfunction promoted by Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide as a possible link between cardiovascular disease and periodontitis

    Get PDF
Oxidative stress is one of the factors that could explain the pathophysiological mechanism of inflammatory conditions that occur in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and periodontitis. Such inflammatory response is often evoked by specific bacteria, as the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Porphyromonas gingivalis is a key factor in this process. The aim of this research was to study the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from periodontitis patients and to evaluate the influence of LPS on fibroblasts to better understand the pathophysiology of periodontitis and its relationship with CVD. PBMCs from patients showed lower CoQ10 levels and citrate synthase activity, together with high levels of ROS production. LPS-treated fibroblasts provoked increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction by a decrease in mitochondrial protein expression, mitochondrial mass, and mitochondrial membrane potential. Our study supports the hypothesis that LPS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction could be at the origin of oxidative stress in periodontal patients. Abnormal PBMC performance may promote oxidative stress and alter cytokine homeostasis. In conclusion, mitochondrial dysfunction could represent a possible link to understanding the interrelationships between two prominent inflammatory diseases: periodontitis and CV

They belonged to a Roman basin (labrum). Roman marbled basins are commonplace functional and ornamental elements in the Roman World. However, such elements have been seldom documented in Hispanic provinces, maybe due to publishing-related problems rather than to the absence of findings. The fragments found in León, made with stone of the quarries of Espejón (Burgos, Castilla y León), possibly connected with the legionary baths, completes the dispersion map for this kind of element in ancient Hispania, while it makes it possible to further address our attention to productive and functional aspects connected with the labraEste trabajo se ha llevado a cabo en el marco de los proyectos de investigación: Campamentos romanos en Hispania: análisis diacrónico de las estructuras defensivas (I+D HUM2006-00534), concedido por Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, que se realiza desde el 1 de octubre de 2006, así como del proyecto: Los campamentos romanos de las legiones VI victrix y VII gemina en León. Fractal Topological Analysis for 2D Binary Digital Images

    Get PDF
Fractal dimension is a powerful tool employed as a measurement of geometric aspects. In this work we propose a method of topological fractal analysis for 2D binary digital images by using a graph-based topological model of them, called Homological Spanning Forest (HSF, for short). Defined at interpixel level, this set of two trees allows to topologically describe the (black and white) connected component distribution within the image with regards to the relationship “to be surrounded by”. This distribution is condensed into a rooted tree, such that its nodes are connected components determined by some special sub-trees of the previous HSF and the levels of the tree specify the degree of nesting of each connected component. We ask for topological auto-similarity by comparing this topological description of the whole image with a regular rooted tree pattern. Such an analysis can be used to directly quantify some characteristics of biomedical images (e.g. cells samples or clinical images) that are not so noticeable when using geometrical approaches.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-PMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad MTM2016-81030-

Comparative study of AR versus video tutorials for minor maintenance operations

[EN] Augmented Reality (AR) has become a mainstream technology in the development of solutions for repair and maintenance operations. Although most of the AR solutions are still limited to specific contexts in industry, some consumer electronics companies have started to offer pre-packaged AR solutions as alternative to video-based tutorials (VT) for minor maintenance operations. In this paper, we present a comparative study of the acquired knowledge and user perception achieved with AR and VT solutions in some maintenance tasks of IT equipment. The results indicate that both systems help users to acquire knowledge in various aspects of equipment maintenance. Although no statistically significant differences were found between AR and VT solutions, users scored higher on the AR version in all cases. Moreover, the users explicitly preferred the AR version when evaluating three different usability and satisfaction criteria. For the AR version, a strong and significant correlation was found between the satisfaction and the achieved knowledge. Since the AR solution achieved similar learning results with higher usability scores than the video-based tutorials, these results suggest that AR solutions are the most effective approach to substitute the typical paper-based instructions in consumer electronics. This work has been supported by Spanish MINECO and EU ERDF programs under grant RTI2018-098156-B-C55.Morillo, P.; García García, I.; Orduña, JM.; Fernández, M.; Juan, M.
