Antiferromagnetic topological insulators
We consider antiferromagnets breaking both time-reversal (Theta) and a
primitive lattice translational symmetry (T) of a crystal but preserving the
combination S = Theta T. The S symmetry leads to a Z_2 topological
classification of insulators, separating the ordinary insulator phase from the
"antiferromagnetic topological insulator" (AFTI) phase. This state is similar
to the "strong" topological insulator with time-reversal symmetry, and shares
with it such properties as a quantized magnetoelectric effect. However, for
certain surfaces the surface states are intrinsically gapped with a
half-quantum Hall effect (sigma_{xy} = e^2 / 2h), which may aid experimental
confirmation of theta = pi quantized magnetoelectric coupling. Step edges on
such a surface support gapless, chiral quantum wires. In closing we discuss
GdBiPt as a possible example of this topological class.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
In-plane transport and enhanced thermoelectric performance in thin films of the topological insulators Bi_2Te_3 and Bi_2Se_3
Several small-bandgap semiconductors are now known to have protected metallic
surface states as a consequence of the topology of the bulk electron
wavefunctions. The known "topological insulators" with this behavior include
the important thermoelectric materials Bi_2Te_3 and Bi_2Se_3, whose surfaces
are observed in photoemission experiments to have an unusual electronic
structure with a single Dirac cone. We study in-plane (i.e., horizontal)
transport in thin films made of these materials. The surface states from top
and bottom surfaces hybridize, and conventional diffusive transport predicts
that the tunable hybridization-induced band gap leads to increased
thermoelectric performance at low temperatures. Beyond simple diffusive
transport, the conductivity shows a crossover from the spin-orbit induced
anti-localization at a single surface to ordinary localization.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Primary Beam Steering Due to Field Leakage from Superconducting SHMS Magnets
Simulations of the magnetic fields from the Super High Momentum Spectrometer
in Hall C at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility show significant
field leakage into the region of the primary beam line between the target and
the beam dump. Without mitigation, these remnant fields will steer the
unscattered beam enough to limit beam operations at small scattering angles.
Presented here are magnetic field simulations of the spectrometer magnets and a
solution using optimal placement of a minimal amount of shielding iron around
the beam line.Comment: Corrected two typos, JIST clas
Bringing the OpenMI to LIFE Progress Report No. 4 - 31st March 2008 – 30th September 2008
The Water Framework Directive demands an integrated approach to water management. This requires the ability to predict how catchment processes will behave and interact in response to the activities of water managers and others. In most contexts, it is not feasible to build a single predictive model that adequately represents all the processes; therefore a means of linking models of individual processes is required. This is met by the FP5 HarmonIT project’s Open Modelling Interface and Environment (the OpenMI). The purpose of this project is to transform the OpenMI from a research output to a sustainable operational Standard. It will build the capacity to use the OpenMI and will demonstrate it under operational conditions. It will also develop, test and demonstrate the future support organisation for the OpenMI. Finally, information about the OpenMI will be disseminated to users

Finding Rhythm in Speech: A Response to Cummins
This paper attempts to address three critical questions left unanswered by Cummins’ review: are rhythm and entrainment physical, perceptual or social phenomena, what are the underlying mechanisms, and what is their role in behaviour such as speech and music? These issues are addressed from the perspective of an engineer/computer-scientist/ roboticist for whom modelling such behaviours within a computational framework not only provides an empirical methodology for validating theoretical claims, but also facilitates the construction of artificial devices that are capable of exhibiting/exploiting those behaviours in the context of human-machine interaction. The paper draws on insights from a range of different perspectives, and attempts to weave them together within a coherent theoretical framework. It is concluded that (i) rhythm and entrainment are phenomena that emerge naturally from the structural coupling within and between even simple systems, (ii) living systems have evolved very effective mechanisms for managing such behaviours for intrinsic and extrinsic gains, and (iii) the fields of energetics and information theory provide the appropriate tools for analysing and characterising such behaviour within a general theoretical framework. It is hoped that these insights will inspire future cross- disciplinary research in these areas, and lead to a deeper understanding of these fundamental behaviours
