Natural PQ symmetry in the 3-3-1 model with a minimal scalar sector
In the framework of a 3-3-1 model with a minimal scalar sector we make a
detailed study concerning the implementation of the PQ symmetry in order to
solve the strong CP problem. For the original version of the model, with only
two scalar triplets, we show that the entire Lagrangian is invariant under a
PQ-like symmetry but no axion is produced since an U(1) subgroup remains
unbroken. Although in this case the strong CP problem can still be solved, the
solution is largely disfavored since three quark states are left massless to
all orders in perturbation theory. The addition of a third scalar triplet
removes the massless quark states but the resulting axion is visible. In order
to become realistic the model must be extended to account for massive quarks
and invisible axion. We show that the addition of a scalar singlet together
with a Z_N discrete gauge symmetry can successfully accomplish these tasks and
protect the axion field against quantum gravitational effects. To make sure
that the protecting discrete gauge symmetry is anomaly free we use a discrete
version of the Green-Schwarz mechanism.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure, 3 table
Volatility and dividend risk in perpetual American options
American options are financial instruments that can be exercised at any time
before expiration. In this paper we study the problem of pricing this kind of
derivatives within a framework in which some of the properties --volatility and
dividend policy-- of the underlaying stock can change at a random instant of
time, but in such a way that we can forecast their final values. Under this
assumption we can model actual market conditions because some of the most
relevant facts that may potentially affect a firm will entail sharp predictable
effects. We will analyse the consequences of this potential risk on perpetual
American derivatives, a topic connected with a wide class of recurrent problems
in physics: holders of American options must look for the fair price and the
optimal exercise strategy at once, a typical question of free absorbing
boundaries. We present explicit solutions to the most common contract
specifications and derive analytical expressions concerning the mean and higher
moments of the exercise time.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, iopart, submitted for publication; deep

Sulphur abundance determinations in star-forming regions-I: Ionization Correction Factor
In the present work we used a grid of photoionization models combined with
stellar population synthesis models to derive reliable Ionization Correction
Factors (ICFs) for the sulphur in star-forming regions. These models cover a
large range of nebular parameters and yielding ionic abundances in consonance
with those derived through optical and infrared observational data of
star-forming regions. From our theoretical ICFs, we suggested an {\alpha} value
of 3.27 in the classical Stasinska formulae. We compared the total sulphur
abundance in the gas phase of a large sample of objects by using our
Theoretical ICF and other approaches. In average, the differences between the
determinations via the use of the different ICFs considered are similar to the
uncertainties in the S/H estimations. Nevertheless, we noted that for some
objects it could reach up to about 0.3 dex for the low metallicity regime.
Despite of the large scatter of the points, we found a trend of S/O ratio to
decrease with the metallicity, independently of the ICF used to compute the
sulphur total abundance.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 21 pages, 8 figures, 5 table
Conformal mapping of ultrasonic crystals: confining ultrasound and cochlear-like wave guiding
Conformal mapping of a slab of a two-dimensional ultrasonic crystal generate
a closed geometrical arrangement of ultrasonic scatterers with appealing
acoustic properties. This acoustic shell is able to confine ultrasonic modes.
Some of these internal resonances can be induced from an external wave source.
The mapping of a linear defect produces a wave-guide that exhibits a
spatial-frequency selection analogous to that characteristic of a synthetic
"cochlea". Both, experimental and theoretical results are reported here.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
High Gain Amplifier with Enhanced Cascoded Compensation
A two-stage CMOS operational amplifier with both, gain-boosting and indirect current feedback frequency compensation performed by means of regulated cascode amplifiers, is presented. By using quasi-floating-gate transistors (QFGT) the supply requirements, the number of capacitors and the size of the compensation capacitors respect to other Miller schemes are reduced. A prototype was fabricated using a 0.5 μm technology, resulting, for a load of 45 pF and supply voltage of 1.65 V, in open-loop-gain of 129 dB, 23 MHz of gain-bandwidth product, 60o phase margin, 675 μW power consumption and 1% settling time of 28 ns
Discovery of a massive supercluster system at
Superclusters are the largest relatively isolated systems in the cosmic web.
Using the SDSS BOSS survey we search for the largest superclusters in the
redshift range .
We generate a luminosity-density field smoothed over
to detect the large-scale over-density regions. Each individual over-density
region is defined as single supercluster in the survey. We define the
superclusters in the way that they are comparable with the superclusters found
in the SDSS main survey.
We found a system we call the BOSS Great Wall (BGW), which consists of two
walls with diameters 186 and 173 Mpc, and two other major superclusters
with diameters of 64 and 91 Mpc. As a whole, this system consists of
830 galaxies with the mean redshift 0.47. We estimate the total mass to be
approximately . The morphology of the
superclusters in the BGW system is similar to the morphology of the
superclusters in the Sloan Great Wall region.
The BGW is one of the most extended and massive system of superclusters yet
found in the Universe.Comment: 4 pages, accepted as a letter in A&
1.5V fully programmable CMOS Membership Function Generator Circuit with proportional DC-voltage control
A Membership Function Generator Circuit (MFGC) with bias supply of 1.5 Volts and independent DC-voltage programmable functionalities is presented. The realization is based on a programmable differential current mirror and three compact voltage-to-current converters, allowing continuous and quasi-linear adjustment of the center position, height, width and slopes of the triangular/trapezoidal output waveforms. HSPICE simulation results of the proposed circuit using the parameters of a double-poly, three metal layers, 0.5 μm CMOS technology validate the functionality of the proposed architecture, which exhibits a maximum deviation of the linearity in the programmability of 7 %
