Late thoracic pseudo-aneurysm causing collapse of vascular prostheses
The outcome of patients with thoracic vascular prostheses is usually uneventful. We report two cases of collapse of thoracic vascular prostheses which occurred ten and forty years, respectively, after the implantation. The diagnoses were obtained preoperatively by CT-scan or NMR and angiography. Both patients were successfully treated with prosthetic replacement by an open approach
Pippi - painless parsing, post-processing and plotting of posterior and likelihood samples
Interpreting samples from likelihood or posterior probability density
functions is rarely as straightforward as it seems it should be. Producing
publication-quality graphics of these distributions is often similarly painful.
In this short note I describe pippi, a simple, publicly-available package for
parsing and post-processing such samples, as well as generating high-quality
PDF graphics of the results. Pippi is easily and extensively configurable and
customisable, both in its options for parsing and post-processing samples, and
in the visual aspects of the figures it produces. I illustrate some of these
using an existing supersymmetric global fit, performed in the context of a
gamma-ray search for dark matter. Pippi can be downloaded and followed at

Investigating physicochemical, volatile and sensory parameters playing a positive or a negative role on tomato liking
This study aimed at providing further insights into the positive and negative drivers of tomato liking. For this purpose, 13 tomato cultivars representing different typologies were characterized for physicochemical parameters and aroma volatiles, and were assessed by a trained panel for sensory descriptors, and by Italian consumers for liking. The relationships among the different parameters and their effects on consumer liking were studied by Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis. Among physicochemical traits and sensory descriptors, seeds, reducing sugars, firmness, thick epicarp, soluble solids, sour taste, total acidity, citrate, herbaceous aroma and brightness were found to be drivers of liking, whereas pulp thickness, humidity, fruit weight, diacetyl-like odor and mealiness showed an opposite influence. For the aroma volatiles, 2-isobutylthiazole played a key role on liking and its positive contribution seemed to be supported by (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, but suppressed by 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol, especially when tomatoes had a poor volatile fraction. Latent class analysis of multimorbidity patterns and associated outcomes in Spanish older adults: a prospective cohort study
Abstract BACKGROUND: This study sought to identify multimorbidity patterns and determine the association between these latent classes with several outcomes, including health, functioning, disability, quality of life and use of services, at baseline and after 3 years of follow-up. METHODS: We analyzed data from a representative Spanish cohort of 3541 non-institutionalized people aged 50 years old and over. Measures were taken at baseline and after 3 years of follow-up. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted using eleven common chronic conditions. Generalized linear models were conducted to determine the adjusted association of multimorbidity latent classes with several outcomes. RESULTS: 63.8% of participants were assigned to the 'healthy' class, with minimum disease, 30% were classified under the 'metabolic/stroke' class and 6% were assigned to the 'cardiorespiratory/mental/arthritis' class. Significant cross-sectional associations were found between membership of both multimorbidity classes and poorer memory, quality of life, greater burden and more use of services. After 3 years of follow-up, the 'metabolic/stroke' class was a significant predictor of lower levels of verbal fluency while the two multimorbidity classes predicted poor quality of life, problems in independent living, higher risk of hospitalization and greater use of health services. CONCLUSIONS: Common chronic conditions in older people cluster together in broad categories. These broad clusters are qualitatively distinct and are important predictors of several health and functioning outcomes. Future studies are needed to understand underlying mechanisms and common risk factors for patterns of multimorbidity and to propose more effective treatments
On the conceptualization and measurement of flow
This chapter introduces in chronological order the three main measurement methods – the Flow Questionnaire, the Experience Sampling Method, and the standardized scales of the componential approach – that researchers developed and used in conducting research on the flow state. Each measurement method and underlying conceptualization is explained, and its strengths and limitations are then discussed in relation to the other measurement methods and associated conceptualizations. The analysis reveals that, although the concept of flow remained stable since its inception, the models of flow that researchers developed in conjunction with the measurement methods changed substantially over time. Moreover, the findings obtained by applying the various measurement methods led to corroborations and disconfirmations of the underlying models, and hence provided indications on how to interpret and possibly modify flow theory. The chapter then analyzes the emerging process approach, which conceptualizes and measures flow as a dynamic path rather than an object, and highlights its potential for integrating flow and creativity within the same conceptual framework. The final section outlines new directions for developing more valid and useful measurement methods that can help to advance the understanding of flow, its antecedents, and its consequences

Standardized ultrasound evaluation of carotid stenosis for clinical trials: University of Washington Ultrasound Reading Center
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Serial monitoring of patients participating in clinical trials of carotid artery therapy requires noninvasive precision methods that are inexpensive, safe and widely available. Noninvasive ultrasonic duplex Doppler velocimetry provides a precision method that can be used for recruitment qualification, pre-treatment classification and post treatment surveillance for remodeling and restenosis. The University of Washington Ultrasound Reading Center (UWURC) provides a uniform examination protocol and interpretation of duplex Doppler velocity measurements.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Doppler waveforms from 6 locations along the common carotid and internal carotid artery path to the brain plus the external carotid and vertebral arteries on each side using a Doppler examination angle of 60 degrees are evaluated. The UWURC verifies all measurements against the images and waveforms for the database, which includes pre-procedure, post-procedure and annual follow-up examinations. Doppler angle alignment errors greater than 3 degrees and Doppler velocity measurement errors greater than 0.05 m/s are corrected.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Angle adjusted Doppler velocity measurements produce higher values when higher Doppler examination angles are used. The definition of peak systolic velocity varies between examiners when spectral broadening due to turbulence is present. Examples of measurements are shown.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Although ultrasonic duplex Doppler methods are widely used in carotid artery diagnosis, there is disagreement about how the examinations should be performed and how the results should be validated. In clinical trails, a centralized reading center can unify the methods. Because the goals of research examinations are different from those of clinical examinations, screening and diagnostic clinical examinations may require fewer velocity measurements.</p
