    High school football player\u27s nutritional knowledge and application

    Objective. The purpose of this study is to determine the nutritional knowledge of high school football players and to determine the application of this knowledge through their food choices. A total of 56.1% participants (n=32) answered 17 or more questions correctly on the nutritional knowledge questionnaire. There was a significant difference between the number correct on the nutritional knowledge questionnaire and year in school between freshman and sophomores. A significant difference was found between year in school and responses for question number seven on the diet recall between freshman and seniors, and juniors and seniors. High School football players lack proper nutrition knowledge, even though they are receiving nutrition education in health class. They are also not applying any knowledge that they do have when making food choices. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

    Dual modulation of cyclooxygenase and CYP epoxygenase metabolism and acute vascular inflammation in mice

    Cyclooxygenase (COX)-derived prostaglandins and cytochrome P450 (CYP) epoxygenase-derived epoxyeicosatrienoic acids are important regulators of inflammation; however, functional interactions between these pathways in the regulation of vascular inflammation in vivo have not been studied. We investigated the relative and additive effects of endothelial CYP2J2 overexpression (Tie2-CYP2J2-Tr), global sEH disruption (Ephx2−/−), and pharmacologic COX inhibition with indomethacin on the acute vascular inflammatory response to endotoxin in mice. Compared to vehicle-treated wild-type C57BL/6 controls, induction of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in lung and liver was similarly attenuated in Tie2-CYP2J2-Tr mice, Ephx2−/− mice and wild-type mice treated with moderate dose indomethacin. Dual modulation of both pathways, however, did not produce an additive anti-inflammatory effect. These findings demonstrate that both COX and CYP epoxygenase-mediated eicosanoid metabolism are important regulators of the acute vascular inflammatory response in vivo, and suggest that the anti-inflammatory effects of modulating each pathway may be mediated, at least in part, by overlapping mechanisms

    Perpetrators of Early Physical and Sexual Abuse Among Homeless and Runaway Adolescents

    Objective: To examine abuse specific variables among homeless and runaway adolescents and to look at perpetrators of childhood abuse. Method: A total of 372 homeless and runaway adolescents were interviewed using a systematic sam¬pling strategy in metropolitan Seattle. Young people were interviewed on the streets and in shelters by outreach workers in youth service agencies. Results: Approximately one-half of these young people reported being physically abused and al¬most one-third experienced sexual abuse. Females experienced significantly higher rates of sex¬ual abuse compared to males, and sexual minority youth experienced significantly higher rates of physical and sexual abuse compared to heterosexual youth. Average duration of physical and sexual abuse was 5 and 2 years, respectively. Both types of abuse were rated as extremely violent by more than half of those who were abused. The average number of different perpetra¬tors of physical and sexual abuse was four and three, respectively. Biological parents were the majority of perpetrators for physical abuse whereas nonfamily members most often perpetrated sexual abuse. Average age of perpetrators was late 20s to early 30s and the majority of perpetra¬tors were male for both types of abuse. Conclusions: The pattern of exploitation and victimization within the family may have serious and cumulative developmental consequences for these youth as they enter the street environment. Early intervention programs are needed to break the cycle of exploitation and abuse that adoles¬cents experience within the family. Without intervention, many of these youth may be at risk of future exploitation and re-victimization out on the street
