Experimental study of externally prestressed segmental beam under torsion

    Get PDF
Externally prestressed segmental (EPS) concrete beams are widely used in the construction of bridge structures today. The EPS concept has become an attractive tool for rehabilitation and strengthening of existing bridges which have insufficient strength and/or excessive deflection and cracking. EPS bridges are affected by combined stresses (bending, shear, normal, and torsion) at the joint interface between the segments. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the structural behaviour of EPS bridge beams under combined stresses, i.e. bending, shear and torsional stresses. An experimental study of two different external tendon layouts, two types of joint between segments and different levels of torsional force applied at different load eccentricities was conducted. It was concluded that torsion reduced the vertical load and vertical deflection at the onset point of nonlinearity as well as at a failure load. Furthermore, the opening between segments was the reason behind the nonlinear behaviour of EPS beams. Torsion did not only alter the value of the failure load, tendon strain and deflection of the beams but it also altered the failure mechanism. Furthermore, due to the shear key, there was a difference between the onset points of nonlinearity load for the different tendon layouts and joint types

Le  pronostic à long terme reste imprévisible. La survenue des complications tardives telle que la nécrose céphalique et de l'arthrose reste toujours imprévisible, ce qui impose un suivi régulier et prolongé des  patients.Key words: Fracture-luxation, cotyle, traitement orthopédique, traitement chirurgica

RRSEB: a reliable routing scheme for energy-balancing using a self-adaptive method in wireless sensor networks

    Get PDF
Over recent years, enormous amounts of research in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been conducted, due to its multifarious applications such as in environmental monitoring, object tracking, disaster management, manufacturing, monitoring and control. In some of WSN applications dependent the energy-efficient and link reliability are demanded. Hence, this paper presents a routing protocol that considers these two criteria. We propose a new mechanism called Reliable Routing Scheme for Energy-Balanced (RRSEB) to reduce the packets dropped during the data communications. It is based on Swarm Intelligence (SI) using the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) method. The RRSEB is a self-adaptive method to ensure the high routing reliability in WSNs, if the failures occur due to the movement of the sensor nodes or sensor node’s energy depletion. This is done by introducing a new method to create alternative paths together with the data routing obtained during the path discovery stage. The goal of this operation is to update and offer new routing information in order to construct the multiple paths resulting in an increased reliability of the sensor network. From the simulation, we have seen that the proposed method shows better results in terms of packet delivery ratio and energy efficiency

    Get PDF
ObjectiveTo review and evaluate patients with a clinicopathological diagnosis of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) with emphasis on the diagnostic methods and the effect of socioeconomic status on disease severity.MethodsData compiled from the previous history of the patients, clinical, laboratory, radioimaging findings, preoperative, operative, histopathological diagnosis and postoperative follow-up period were analysed. On the basis of presentation, XGP was classified as complicated and simple.ResultsThere were 18 cases of XGP. The clinical characteristics included: calculi or obstruction in the urinary tract, and damage to the kidney, complication of urinary tract infection, anaemia, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and liver dysfunction. All patients had diffuse XGP. Associated pathological findings such as psoas abscess, nephrocutaneous fistula, renocolonic fistula and paranephric abscess were found in 33.3% of cases. Eleven of 14 patients (78.6%) who were evaluated by computed tomography (CT) had the correct diagnosis made prior to nephrectomy. Urine culture was positive in 88.9% of patients and Proteus mirabilis was the most common organism.ConclusionOur experience with a small number of patients demonstrates that low socioeconomic status could be a risk factor in the development of complicated cases of XGP. CT is considered to be the best radiological test for correct preoperative diagnosis and evaluation of XGP. Nephrectomy and removal of all surrounding affected tissue proved to be curative for XGP

Externally Prestressed segmental beams are widely used in the construction of bridge structures today. These beams have many attractive advantages for rehabilitation and strengthening of existing structures as well. However, segmental beams experience significant effect under combined stresses at the joint interfaces between segments. This paper presents a finite element study on the effect of torsion on the structural behavior of both external prestressed monolithic and segmental concrete beams. Geometric and material nonlinearities were included in the study. The results show significant difference in the behavior of monolithic and segmental beams under torsion
