    Evaluation of an on-site sewage disposal system at the Lake of the Ozarks

    An aeration device - conventional soil disposal field system was monitored for one year in the Lake of the Ozarks area to assess its treatment efficiency and effect on the water quality of the immediate area. The aeration unit consistently produced a well oxidized effluent (soluble COD=44 mg/L; N03-N=22 mg/L; P04=6. 3 mg /L; SS=l 4 mg /L). Soi1-water samples taken from the tile line and 2 and 5 m down slope indicate that considerable denitrification was occurring but may be decreasing. Little coliform movement was detected. The practice of excavating tile lines into the bedrock was discouraged due to a lack of treatment occurring.Project # G-1235-06 Agreement # 14-08-0001-G-1235-0

    Microcalorimetric Measurement Of The Enthalpies Of Transfer Of A Series Of M-alkoxyphenols From Isotonic Aqueous Solution To Escherichia Coli Cells

    Enthalpies of interactions of a series of m-alkoxyphenols with non-growing Escherichia coli suspended in a salt solution have been recorded. These data have been analysed on the assumption that the initial relatively rapid endothermic process represented the transfer of solute from aqueous solution to cells (ΔHtrs) and that the subsequent relatively lengthy exothermic process resulted from the biological consequences of the transfer process itself. The derived values are compared with values of ΔHtrs found for transfer of these solutes from water to octan-1-ol, heptane and propylene carbonate.8292929293

    1/3-Octave Analysis of Core/Combustor-Noise Measurements for the DGEN Aeropropulsion Research Turbofan with Application to Noise Prediction

    This work continues the analysis of data obtained during a 2017 NASA DGEN Aeropropulsion Research Turbofan (DART) core/combustor-noise baseline test in the NASA GRC Aero-Acoustic Propulsion Laboratory (AAPL). The DART is a cost-efficient testbed for the study of core-noise physics and mitigation. Acoustic data were simultaneously acquired using the AAPL overhead microphone array in the engine aft-quadrant farfield, a single midfield microphone, and two infinite-tube-probe sensors for unsteady pressures at the core-nozzle exit. The data are here examined on an 1/3-octave basis as a first step in extending and improving core-noise prediction capability

    Anthropogenic Space Weather

    Anthropogenic effects on the space environment started in the late 19th century and reached their peak in the 1960s when high-altitude nuclear explosions were carried out by the USA and the Soviet Union. These explosions created artificial radiation belts near Earth that resulted in major damages to several satellites. Another, unexpected impact of the high-altitude nuclear tests was the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that can have devastating effects over a large geographic area (as large as the continental United States). Other anthropogenic impacts on the space environment include chemical release ex- periments, high-frequency wave heating of the ionosphere and the interaction of VLF waves with the radiation belts. This paper reviews the fundamental physical process behind these phenomena and discusses the observations of their impacts.Comment: 71 pages, 35 figure

    This article analyses the role of HRM practices in the implementation of an innovative cross-functional approach to new product development (concurrent engineering, CE) in Eurotech Industries. Contrary to CE methodology stipulations, and despite supportive conditions, HRM received scant attention in the implementation process. Organizational power and politics were clearly involved in this situation, and this article explores how their play created such HRM &lsquo;absences&rsquo;. The article builds on a four-dimensional view of power in order to provide a deeper understanding of the embedded, interdependent and political nature of HRM practice and innovation.<br /
