    Gilt Edge Mine NPL Site Lawrence County, South Dakota: Final Report for the Climatic Evaluation (Deadwood and Lead, South Dakota)

    This document serves as the final report for the climatic evaluation for the Ruby Gulch waste rock dump cap at the Gilt Edge Mine Site, Lawrence County, South Dakota (SD). This project was a collaborative effort between CDM Federal Programs Corporation and South Dakota State University (SDSU) under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region VIII response action contract. This report includes climatic analyses, raw weather data, and conclusions. In 1998 the Gilt Edge Mine near Deadwood, SD was abandoned and the reclamation of the mining site was halted. In 2000 SD requested that the EPA place the Gilt Edge Mine Site on the Superfund National Priorities List. SDSU through the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (SDAES) was asked to assist the State of South Dakota and the EPA in the development of a remediation and revegetation plan for the abandoned Gilt Edge Mine Site.The objectives of this report are: 1. Detail and summarize the climatic information for the Gilt Edge Mine site area. 2. Analyze the data for application for soil and vegetation purposes 3. Archive the raw weather data from Deadwood and Lead, SD.This report highlights the available climatic data for two weather stations near the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund Site (GEMSS). The weather stations studied were Deadwood and Lead, SD. The weather station data for Deadwood covered the years 1943 through 1999 and the weather station data for Lead covered the years 1909 through 1999. The weather data summarized in this report include daily temperature (maximum, minimum, and average), monthly temperature (maximum, minimum, and average), numbers of days at critical warm and cold temperatures, precipitation (daily, daily maximums, 7-day maximums, monthly, monthly maximums, snowfall, and number of days per year at critical precipitation levels), growing degree days (40 OF basis), growing season length (28 OF basis). Deadwood, SD climatic data is summarized in Table A. Lead, SD climatic data is summarized in Table B

    The São Francisco Submedium Valley is located at the Brazilian semiarid region and is an important center for irrigated fruit growing. Based on the fact that organic fertilization can improve soil quality, we compared the effects of conventional and organic soil management on microbial activity and mycorrhization of seedless grape crops. We measured glomerospores number, most probable number (MPN) of propagules, richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species, AMF root colonization, EE-BRSP production, carbon microbial biomass (C-MB), microbial respiration, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity (FDA) and metabolic coefficient (qCO2). The organic management led to an increase in all variables with the exception of EE-BRSP and qCO2. Mycorrhizal colonization increased from 4.7% in conventional crops to 15.9% in organic crops. Spore number ranged from 4.1 to 12.4 per 50 g-1 soil in both management systems. The most probable number of AMF propagules increased from 79 cm-3 soil in the conventional system to 110 cm-3 soil in the organic system. Microbial carbon, CO2 emission, and FDA activity were increased by 100 to 200% in the organic crop. Thirteen species of AMF were identified, the majority in the organic cultivation system. Acaulospora excavata, Entrophospora infrequens, Glomus sp.3 and Scutellospora sp. were found only in the organically managed crop. S. gregaria was found only in the conventional crop.     Stripes, Pseudogaps, and Van Hove Nesting in the Three-band tJ Model

    Slave boson calculations have been carried out in the three-band tJ model for the high-T_c cuprates, with the inclusion of coupling to oxygen breathing mode phonons. Phonon-induced Van Hove nesting leads to a phase separation between a hole-doped domain and a (magnetic) domain near half filling, with long-range Coulomb forces limiting the separation to a nanoscopic scale. Strong correlation effects pin the Fermi level close to, but not precisely at the Van Hove singularity (VHS), which can enhance the tendency to phase separation. The resulting dispersions have been calculated, both in the uniform phases and in the phase separated regime. In the latter case, distinctly different dispersions are found for large, random domains and for regular (static) striped arrays, and a hypothetical form is presented for dynamic striped arrays. The doping dependence of the latter is found to provide an excellent description of photoemission and thermodynamic experiments on pseudogap formation in underdoped cuprates. In particular, the multiplicity of observed gaps is explained as a combination of flux phase plus charge density wave (CDW) gaps along with a superconducting gap. The largest gap is associated with VHS nesting. The apparent smooth evolution of this gap with doping masks a crossover from CDW-like effects near optimal doping to magnetic effects (flux phase) near half filling. A crossover from large Fermi surface to hole pockets with increased underdoping is found. In the weakly overdoped regime, the CDW undergoes a quantum phase transition (TCDW0T_{CDW}\to 0), which could be obscured by phase separation.Comment: 15 pages, Latex, 18 PS figures Corrects a sign error: major changes, esp. in Sect. 3, Figs 1-4,6 replace

    Frequency, diversity, and productivity study on the Aedes aegypti most preferred containers in the City of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

    The most preferred containers by Aedes aegypti were studied April and July (rainy and dry periods) in two Manaus neighbourhoods. In all, 2,700 premises and 13,912 containers were examined, most (87%) recorded outdoors. Out of the 13,100 inspected premises, only 1.6% showed to be positive for Aedes aegypti, summing up to 7,916 collected samples. Most frequently found containers outdoors in either neighbourhood regardless of rain or dry period were Bottles flasks and Storage, and indoors, Fixed, Flowerpots, and buckets. Productivity was estimated according to the number of premises and positive containers investigated, showing the actual container groups productivity. Considering both rainy and dry periods outdoors at Praça 14 the groups of Tyre, Flask, Bottle, Construction Equipment and Fixed, had the highest averages respectively. Construction Equipment and Flask groups were the most productive in Coroado in April. Flask, Construction Equipment and Storage groups stood out in July
