Development and study of chemical vapor deposited tantalum base alloys
A technique for the chemical vapor deposition of alloys was developed. The process, termed pulsing, involves the periodic injection of reactant gases into a previously-evacuated reaction chamber where they blanket the substrate almost instantaneously. Formation of alternating layers of the alloy components and subsequent homogenization allows the formation of an alloy of uniform composition with the composition being determined by the duration and relative numbers of the various cycles. The technique has been utilized to produce dense alloys of uniform thickness and composition (Ta- 10 wt % W) by depositing alternating layers of Ta and W by the hydrogen reduction of TaCl5 and WCl6. A similar attempt to deposit a Ta - 8 wt % W - 2 wt% Hf alloy was unsuccessful because of the difficulty in reducing HfCl4 at temperatures below those at which gas phase nucleation of Ta and W occurred
Bremsstrahlung Pair Production In Relativistic Heavy Ion Collision
We calculate production of electron- and muon-pairs by the bremsstrahlung
process in hadron collisions and compare it with the dominant two-photon
process. Results for the total cross section are given for proton-proton and
heavy-ion collisions at energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)

A high pressure cell for dynamic light scattering up to 2kbars with conservation of plane of polarization
We report on a high pressure cell with six optical windows which can be used up to 2 kbars for laser light scattering applications at scattering angles of 45 degrees , 90 degrees , and 135 degrees of liquid samples in a temperature range between -20 and 150 degrees C. The pressure transmitting medium is compressed nitrogen. The window material used is SF57 NSK, a glass with an extremely low stress optical coefficient in the order of about 10(-5) which allows thus to maintain the plane of polarization even under the action of high pressure. In order to demonstrate the functioning of the cell we show Rayleigh-Brillouin spectra of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) at different polarizations and pressures
Supersaturated dispersions of rod-like viruses with added attraction
The kinetics of isotropic-nematic (I-N) and nematic-isotropic (N-I) phase
transitions in dispersions of rod-like {\it fd}-viruses are studied.
Concentration quenches were applied using pressure jumps in combination with
polarization microscopy, birefringence and turbidity measurements. The full
biphasic region could be accessed, resulting in the construction of a first
experimental analogue of the bifurcation diagram. The N-I spinodal points for
dispersions of rods with varying concentrations of depletion agents (dextran)
were obtained from orientation quenches, using cessation of shear flow in
combination with small angle light scattering. We found that the location of
the N-I spinodal point is independent of the attraction, which was confirmed by
theoretical calculations. Surprisingly, the experiments showed that also the
absolute induction time, the critical nucleus and the growth rate are
insensitive of the attraction, when the concentration is scaled to the distance

Mechanism of hot corrosion of IN-738
The Na2SO4 - induced hot corrosion of IN-738 in the temperature range 900 C to 1000 C is characterized by an initiation stage during which the corrosion rate is slow followed by a propagation stage during which the corrosion rate is markedly accelerated. In the second stage, corrosion is accelerated due essentially to a sulfidation/oxidation mechanism; in the third stage, the rate becomes catastrophic due to acid fluxing induced by an accumulation of refractory metal oxides (particularly MoO3) in the Na2SO4. The sequential stages in the corrosion process are described and a mechanism proposed. The influence of alloy microstructure on the corrosion mechanism is also discussed
