An innovative approach to compensator design
The design is considered of a computer-aided-compensator for a control system from a frequency domain point of view. The design technique developed is based on describing the open loop frequency response by n discrete frequency points which result in n functions of the compensator coefficients. Several of these functions are chosen so that the system specifications are properly portrayed; then mathematical programming is used to improve all of these functions which have values below minimum standards. To do this, several definitions in regard to measuring the performance of a system in the frequency domain are given, e.g., relative stability, relative attenuation, proper phasing, etc. Next, theorems which govern the number of compensator coefficients necessary to make improvements in a certain number of functions are proved. After this a mathematical programming tool for aiding in the solution of the problem is developed. This tool is called the constraint improvement algorithm. Then for applying the constraint improvement algorithm generalized, gradients for the constraints are derived. Finally, the necessary theory is incorporated in a Computer program called CIP (compensator Improvement Program). The practical usefulness of CIP is demonstrated by two large system examples
Analyzing P300 Distractors for Target Reconstruction
P300-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are often trained per-user and
per-application space. Training such models requires ground truth knowledge of
target and non-target stimulus categories during model training, which imparts
bias into the model. Additionally, not all non-targets are created equal; some
may contain visual features that resemble targets or may otherwise be visually
salient. Current research has indicated that non-target distractors may elicit
attenuated P300 responses based on the perceptual similarity of these
distractors to the target category. To minimize this bias, and enable a more
nuanced analysis, we use a generalized BCI approach that is fit to neither user
nor task. We do not seek to improve the overall accuracy of the BCI with our
generalized approach; we instead demonstrate the utility of our approach for
identifying target-related image features. When combined with other intelligent
agents, such as computer vision systems, the performance of the generalized
model equals that of the user-specific models, without any user specific data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Compensator improvement for multivariable control systems
A theory and the associated numerical technique are developed for an iterative design improvement of the compensation for linear, time-invariant control systems with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. A strict constraint algorithm is used in obtaining a solution of the specified constraints of the control design. The result of the research effort is the multiple input, multiple output Compensator Improvement Program (CIP). The objective of the Compensator Improvement Program is to modify in an iterative manner the free parameters of the dynamic compensation matrix so that the system satisfies frequency domain specifications. In this exposition, the underlying principles of the multivariable CIP algorithm are presented and the practical utility of the program is illustrated with space vehicle related examples
NERVA irradiation program. GTR 23, volume 1: Combined effects of reactor radiation and cryogenic temperature on NERVA structural materials
Specimens fabricated from structural materials that were candidates for certain NERVA applications were irradiated in liquid nitrogen (LN2), liquid hydrogen (LH2), water, and air. The specimens irradiated in LN2 were stored in LN2 and finally tested in LN2, or at some higher temperature in a few instances. The specimens irradiated in LH2 underwent an unplanned warmup while in storage so this portion of the test was lost; some specimens were tested in LN2 but none were tested in LH2. The Ground Test Reactor was the radiation source. The test specimens consisted mainly of tensile and fracture toughness specimens of several different materials, but other types of specimens such as tear, flexure, springs, and lubricant were also irradiated. Materials tested include Hastelloy X, Al, Ni steel, steel, Be, ZrC, Ti-6Al-4V, CuB, and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
Theory of imaging a photonic crystal with transmission near-field optical microscopy
While near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) can provide optical
images with resolution much better than the diffraction limit, analysis and
interpretation of these images is often difficult. We present a theory of
imaging with transmission NSOM that includes the effects of tip field,
tip/sample coupling, light propagation through the sample and light collection.
We apply this theory to analyze experimental NSOM images of a nanochannel glass
(NCG) array obtained in transmission mode. The NCG is a triangular array of
dielectric rods in a dielectric glass matrix with a two-dimensional photonic
band structure. We determine the modes for the NCG photonic crystal and
simulate the observed data. The calculations show large contrast at low
numerical aperture (NA) of the collection optics and detailed structure at high
NA consistent with the observed images. We present calculations as a function
of NA to identify how the NCG photonic modes contribute to and determine the
spatial structure in these images. Calculations are presented as a function of
tip/sample position, sample index contrast and geometry, and aperture size to
identify the factors that determine image formation with transmission NSOM in

In this essay, we have integrated the voices of our mentors and students to explore 45 years of undergraduate research experiences and their role in shaping our scientific community. In considering our collective experiences, we see undergraduate involvement in research as a rich source of community development, one that has both touched our lives and influenced our teaching
Velocity Visualization in Gaseous Flows
Techniques yielding simultaneous, multiple point measurements of velocity in reacting or nonreacting flow fields have the potential to significantly impact basic and applied studies of fluid mechanics. Several candidate schemes which could provide such measurement capability were investigated. The concepts utilize laser sources which lead to scattered light which can be monitored by a film based camera or a multielement solid state camera. Velocity measurements in supersonic flows using a novel Doppler modulated fluorescence concept are presented
The parasite complex of the citrus psylla, trioza erytreae (Del Guercio) (Homoptera)
1. Fifteen parasite species comprising the T. erytreae complex in Salisbury are listed. 2. Detailed, illustrated accounts are given of the biology of two primary parasites, Tetrastichus Pradiatus Waterston and Psyllaephagus pulvinatus (Waterston ), and their main hyperparasite, Aphidencyrtus cassatus Annecke. 3. The biology of the remaining twelve less important hyperparasites is briefly described and illustrated. 4. Keys are given to the adults, pupae and pupal remains of the parasites. 5 . The population fluctuations of T. erytreae and its parasites, as determined from field studies in the Salisbury area, are reported . 6. Telemetric Observations of Foraging Ozark Big-Eared Bats in Arkansas
Ozark big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii ingens) foraging activities were studied during 1995 in Marion County, Arkansas. Adult bats were equipped with radiotransmitters and tracked during June and July. Foraging activities were generally within 1 kilometer (km) of the roost cave. Male bats ranged farther than females with the exception of one female that flew 2.5 km into a different watershed. Male big-eared bats and northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) were also found within the maternity colony
